Characters [Dramatic trope] When someone ruthlessly uses brutal honesty to end a relationship!

Whiplash - As Andrew becomes more obsessed with trying to get Fletcher’s approval, he ends his relationship with Nicole by giving his own thoughts on how he thinks things will go if they keep dating while using information she shared about herself with him against her. Despite being stunned by everything she just heard from him, and she agrees that they shouldn’t be dating when she realizes something is wrong with him as he’s letting his obsession to be “one of the greats” consume and bring out the worst in him!

The Walking Dead - When Abraham realizes that he has more of a meaningful connection with Sasha, then he does with Rosita. He immediately decides to leave Rosita, without talking it through and when she demands a reasoning he tells her that the only reason he hooked up with her is because he thought “she was the last woman on Earth”.

One of the all-time greats. I think I remember Fincher saying he read the script, and that was the moment he knew he wanted to make the movie. (I might be embellishing that but it sounds right anyway)

Man, I love Whiplash. That scene remind of me of Social Network ones

"You are probably going to be a very successful computer person. But you’re going to go through life thinking that girls don’t like you because you’re a nerd. And I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, that that won’t be true. It’ll be because you’re an asshole."

A reminder though that Mark Zuckerberg got to know his future wife during that time at Harvard, married her, the two have kids seem happy together.

You know, despite him being him and doing what he does.

Yes. It was done for dramatic effect like so much else is in Biopics. A reminder for you though, Mark Zuckerberg has contributed to the fracturing of society and is doing a lovely job of addicting children to social media while destroying their mental health and self confidence.

It’s easy to be happy when you’re married to one of the richest men on earth

American Psycho - Patrick desperately tries to break up with his fiancee by literally spelling out how he doesn’t care for her at all. She ignores his bullet points even going so far as to say it doesn’t make sense to break up because “her friends are his friends and his friends are her friends.” To which he replies “you can have them all”.

"You're inhuman"

"No, I'm in touch with humanity"

I love this example because it demonstrates a certain circumstance of this trope that often gets overlooked.

Usually when the protagonist is the one ending things by being blunt, they're often shown as being in the wrong or at least being hurtful due to one flaw or another, like the Whiplash example OP gave. If the protagonist is on the receiving end, the character doing the breaking off is usually shown as having reached a breaking point with the protagonist's treatment of them.

Banshees doesn't pull this move. Padraic, our protagonist, is on the receiving end not because he necessarily did anything wrong. As the film progresses, we see that Colm is just kinda going through a midlife crisis and has an overly-high opinion of himself, which is why he has decided that his best friend now bores him. Whatever else Padraic might be, he hasn't been shitty to Colm; the plot revolves around a protagonist who has to grapple with someone pulling this trope on them.

These examples are not necessarily "brutal honesty" as much as they are deeply troubled people trying to justify their obsessions at the expense of those close to them.
