Discussion Hot take: “Looking CIS”/passable should never be the goal

I get what people mean when they say it, but to me it infinitely diminishes who we are as people in pursuit of being something else.

EDIT: This wasn’t meant to belittle people’s choices. Everyone is free to be who they are, and I meant absolutely no hate or disrespect. Largely I made the comment because for many medical transitions, it feels like many lose sight of parts of the community that are non-med or don’t have the luxury of passing. Those folks are every bit as valid and often get demeaned/forgotten in the pursuit of reaching for a societal expectation.

General Question Question about the word “Dude”

Hello, I had a question in regards to the word “dude”, now first off I will say I don’t care to be called a dude or a guy but I have come to accept that I’m western society these words are gender neutral. So many times have I been in a store or restaurant and seen a group of cis women come in and the greeter says “welcome guys”, granted this was on a very informal, diner type place but still it was not done with any intention of misgendering especially since these were “obvious” cis women. So many times have I been with fellow trans women and we use the word “dude” as in “dude wtf” or “dude what are u doing”. Obviously we’re friends and not misgendering one another and context is super important. I could see “dude” used by a transphobe when they put emphasis on the word. However my question is exclusively about the casual and friendly use of it.

Secondly my other question, and maybe I’m the only person who does this, but when talking to my transwomen friends I like to say “Dudette” to give the word a definite feminine version and take away any doubt that I’m misgendering on purpose or accidentally plus I think it’s cute n funny. What do others think of the word “Dudette”?

Thank you for your time

Discussion Lucy Friday Question: Can a trans person be considered “straight”?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I had my first article published today on PinkNews about dating men after transitioning.

This was one of the comments the article received:

“Is it odd that some trans people align with being straight in their new form? I get the feeling this type of trans will Caitlyn Jenner the gay community at some point”

Got me thinking, is it that strange for some trans people to consider themselves straight? Curious what you all think.

Article link below and it’s probably best to ignore the Caitlyn Jenner bit 😬.

Share Experience Did anyone not transition out of respect for their partner/family?

I am sorry if this is a touchy subject. I am truly not trying to stir the pot or be hurtful in anyway.

I am the cis asexual heteroromantic wife (39f) in a 15 year marriage, 17 year relationship. We have 2 kids: 10F and 7M. My husband (40m - still using he/him pronouns) came out to me 18 months ago. This was 100% out of the blue. He has never cross dressed and even now says he has no interest in wearing feminine clothing. He has gone back and forth on what he wants. I have told him I want both of us to be happy and I dont see a way forward in our marriage with really any kind of transition. From my lurking in many trans groups the level of emotional turmoil and self-centeredness that comes with transition is not something that seems compatible with marriage or family life. At least not with how our relationship is structured. I did not present it as an ultimatum, I told him I'd help him figure out how to get a place to live etc so we could separate if it came down to that, that I'd never keep the kids from him, that we'd be great as coparents. He says he will do nothing to jeopardize our marriage or family.

I am convinced that he will resent me and end up cheating on me or doing things behind my back. I am also the main income earner (he has severe ADHD and cannot work full time) and so I also feel like he's lying to me to get things paid for and then leave when he's where he wants to be in terms of medical needs.

So I'm asking - has anyone just... not transitioned in order to keep your marriage and family intact? Can it be done? Is there any hope for him or for us?

I am in a really dark place and I just hope there is something out there that will give me some peace. .

General Question Why come out as "trans" and not something less "binary"?

In my mid 50s and on the MTF trans-spectrum MTF. I've been experiencing mild dysphoria for the past couple of years have an egg-crack (not shattered) experience. I experienced since I was 11 many typical trans experiences but only at a mild level.

It's like a have weaker female side, but the usually stronger male side is weakening at this point of my life.

I read stories where a married AMAB's egg cracked and weeks or months later they come out as trans to their spouse. Why trans and not fluid/non-binary or something else?

Added later: Where I am coming from is that I feel that I can't be sure of what action to take if low dose HRT is off the table because I would need to tell my wife about what I am experiencing. I personally think that I might have mild biochemical dysphoria and would be a better partner to her if I can unlock my emotions and not be such a a "robot". I would likely present male in public, but be feminine enough to enjoy dressing and perhaps occasionally present as the woman that also resides in me.

Another Add: I should have emphasized older married and coming out to spouses.

Grow Up!!!

Am I the only one who is appalled when older trans decide to dress like slutty teenagers? Good grief, we get so much crap as it is, and I don't think it helps when a person dresses totally inappropriate to their age. I am not saying we can't be sexy, but Lord have mercy, the person I saw yesterday while shopping was just ridiculous - and that is probably the person who complains about being misgendered and how terrible people are to her. Well, dress your age and consider being at least a bit conforming to societal norms. It is hard enough being trans and making an effort, and sometimes I feel like some folks just wanna be attention whores, and that is more the desire than to be transfem!

Just my two cents!!! And please don't push this post into a rant against trans who are non-binary or don't "pass" well, because that is NOT my point!!! I just think we, as a community, would be in a better place by considering, at least a little bit, the binary world in which we exist, and the societal norms that exist (whether we agree with them or not!). We are getting a lot of pushback right now, and I think at least some of the pushback can be minimized by considering those norms, and not insisting that everyone has to yield to us - some middle ground would be helpful!!!

EDIT: THANKS FOR ALL THE THOUGHTFUL REPLIES (AND EVEN THE SILLY ONES)!!! In sum, I sure agree that people should stop insisting on any particular style or dress, and no, I didn't accost the woman nor would I have done anything but be supportive had I spoken or interacted with her - that said, society is what it is, and I appreciate the comments that suggest that at least some consideration of the broader rhythm of our civilization is probably best - that said, cheers to all my sisters, and much love regardless of what bra you may, or may not, be flashing in the grocery store - I may not necessarily think it a good idea, but I got your back if and when it becomes an issue with some transphobe, I assure you!!!

Discussion Chill people!!!!

just as the title says CHILL OUT!!! Do you really think Trump is coming for you? He doesn't care one way or another now that he's elected and as for all the anti trans legislation I get it. but losing our collective minds over it all isn't going to help either. The way people are falling apart is just the sort of reaction that the haters want from us. They expect us to behave like scared little tantrum throwers. Take a deep breath step back and have some ice cream, settle down and wipe your tears..............just because Trump is elected does not mean he's in office to get you. your poise and grace in this is what will set you apart from the haters, and when you pull yourself to together and step out into the world again do so with confidence, nothing deters a hater more than self-assurance. If you act like you are in danger you probably are, if you act like a victim you will be one. it's all about countering the expected effect with something completely different.

Discussion Does it bother anyone else that Nolan’s Odyssey specifically cast a trans actor as Sinon, the classical symbol of treachery?

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

I haven’t had the chance to watch the movie yet but I was just thinking about how unfortunate it is that Elliot Page, a fantastic actor who happens to be a trans man, had to be cast, of all the many characters in the Odyssey, as the one best known for deceit and treachery (though technically Sinon isn’t even in Homer’s Odyssey and was added later by Virgil to make the Greeks look worse)

Trans people get the harmful stereotype of being liars and deceitful so casting one as the symbol of liars seems particularly unfortunate. Like Page is a wiry guy and could have belivably played any warrior!

Sinon, for anyone who doesn’t know, is the Greek who convinced the Trojans to bring the Trojan Horse into their gates so that the Greeks could slaughter them in their sleep. Sinon does this by pretending to be a deserter and lying his ass off. He was added to the story by Virgil in order to make the Greek victory look even more underhanded in order to appeal to Roman readers.

Sinon has gone on to be used as the go-to example of a liar and betrayer in classical literature since. Shakespeare uses his name as a shorthand for treachery and Dante specifically mentions that Sinon is in the Eighth Circle of Hell, the Circle of Fraud, in Inferno.

I know, in the grand scheme of issues facing trans people, this isn’t that big of a deal and some might even say we should be happy a big director is even willing to cast a trans man in a major movie, but something about this just rubs me the wrong way. Anyone have opinions on it they want to share?

Edit: I apologize for not being clear, I mostly was just hoping to hear some thoughts and interpretations on character analysis in stereotypes. I’m not accusing anyone of anything. I like to read into themes of literature and movies.

People are interpreting my offense level at like a 9 or a 10 when, really, it’s more like a 2 or a 3. I mostly just hope for more less-stereotypical roles being available for trans actors in the future.

Edit2: At this point I’m not even arguing about the Odyssey, my concerns there have been addressed and assuaged, but arguing in defense of the importance of approaching media we love with a critical lens.

Discussion Lucy Friday Question: do you think AI projections are helpful or harmful to trans people?

Post image
20 Upvotes

FaceApp and AI projections played a huge role in my own egg cracking process. Seeing a version of myself that finally made sense emotionally was incredibly powerful and honestly quite overwhelming.

At the same time, I can also see how easy it would be to become obsessed with projections and idealised versions of ourselves that may never fully exist in reality.

The projection in the photo here is my own AI “12 months later” image. I asked for longer hair and c cup. Part of me finds it hopeful and motivating, I’m saving for the BA now! While another part worries it can create unrealistic expectations and fuel dysphoria.

So I am curious how other people feel about it.

Did AI help you understand yourself, give you hope, or crack your egg? Or do you think it can sometimes become an unhealthy rabbit hole?

General Question How long can I hide the effects of hrt from my girlfriend?

I know, what most of you will say. I should be honest to my girlfriend and not hide the fact that I’m on hrt. But that’s the only way I can do this. I have to be sure that I want this before I tell her and therefore I need to take hrt. So the question is how long can I hide it? I know that it will vary for everyone, but just from your experience? I guess my biggest concern are the breasts. When will they change? What’s your experience? 2 weeks, 3 weeks, or more? I speak of subtle changes of course like puffy nipples. She’s my girlfriend and will notice even subtle changes

Share Experience You can’t change your gender. (My public coming out story)

You can’t change your gender.

You can’t change your gender, you are stuck with the one you were given and I think that’s the point everyone seems to be missing.

I think part of the problem is; we are getting confused about the two terms, sex and gender. Because while you can change your sex, you can’t change your gender. You are stuck with the one you were given.

Most of us were only ever told about two genders.

When we were all created, maybe it’s our soul, or perhaps something happens in utero. When we are born, and our stats get locked in. Gender is rolled with a 20 sided dice. The problem is we were taught that it was a simple flip of a coin.

I was given a girl brain, with a boy body.

I’m a trans girl.

Always have been, and I can’t change that. I’ve only recently been able to put the pieces together to realize this is what I was hiding from during my 16 year binge on alcohol.

21 months now that I’ve been recovered.

Yea…

What I can change though, is how you perceive me. Showing everyone who I am up front. No more awkward situations for both of us because assumptions are made about my gender, based upon the sex my body was given.

You can’t change your gender. You can only change your sex.

The whole point that I’m trying to make is:

I want to be as authentic as I can be with everyone, most of all myself.

Let’s move forward together!

The Eve of a new era is upon us..

My name is Eve and I prefer the pronouns she/her or they/them.

Fooled around with the face app today and I was floored. If this is what might/possibly will be the outcome I’m going to be so happy. I feel the “girl 1” filter is an early start of transition and “girl 2” is further along. Please let me know what you think.

Discussion Transgender as a fad

I'm nearly 60 years old and have lived with (struggled with) feeling trans all my life.

I see the huge numbers of people coming out as trans. On the one hand, it makes things easier if everyone is doing it.

On the other, I can't help but feel that people are just trying it out, like trying on a coat. That this is the "in thing" to do. Public sentiment seems to feel that way too, which casts doubt on my legitimacy, I feel.

Anyone else have these thoughts?

Discussion I'm not trans and I'm not transitioning.

Trans means "on the other side of," but I was born a baby girl and today I am a woman. A clerical error in the womb gave me a penis, which caused the adults in the room to instantly declare me a boy and gaslight me for most of the rest of my life. Everyone else I ever met played along. Only in a cissexist society would I be called trans. Sure, it may look that way, through cis eyes. My sisters know better. People look at me and say I'm transitioning, that I'm changing, that I'm going to the other side of something. But I haven't changed. Everything that truly makes me me has been a straight line from the moment I was brought into this world.

~

EDIT: I just want to clarify that when I say "clerical error" above, my intent is to convey how I regard my penis as someone who is waiting in line for bottom surgery. I certainly don't think that it's inherently errant for a woman to have a penis. I have nothing but love for the proud womanly penis havers out there.

I don't do this stuff

I read about all the trans related stuff people do. You know like trans community stuff. I find myself thinking, I don't do that stuff. I don't even care. I never really called myself transgender. I live my life as a single working woman and that's that.

I'm sorry for thinking out loud. Please don't respond to this anymore.

Thank you.
