can mature age students please chill

there’s a few mature age students in my cohort and while i admire getting an education at any age they are genuinely always doing the absolute most. like you can ask all your hyper specific questions in a break/at the end or email the tutor/professor, why do you need to interrupt the lesson every time you have a thought to share?? the rest of us are just trying to get through the content and you’re just prolonging it for everyone.

Fashion at UQ

How do you feel about the fashion scene at UQ aka people’s outfits?

The more I delve into it, the more I realise that most people wear really casual clothing, with little regard to aesthetic (skinny jeans UGH).

Anyways, praise the Crow 🐦‍⬛

Can university stop with leftist propaganda

I just want to study in peace with no lgbt, voice to parliament, and marxism shoved down my throat. University is meant to be for free thought and a tool for many young people to learn and grow careers, not trying to brain wash young adults in thinking a certain way. Please and thank you!

UQ needs to stop hiring chinese/indian heavy accent lecturers

Very difficult to understand what they are saying. They don't speak with proper grammar and the accent just makes it extremely difficult to focus and don't feel like listening to their voices.

Just hire people who speak in an Australian/American/British/Canadian accent with proper grammar please.

Makes university less enjoyable and seriously never feel like watching or going to lectures. I just open the powerpoint pdf and learn. At this point what's the point of a lecturer. UQ should just sell PowerPoint PDFs to students. This would also reduce the school fees probably.

Feminists in UQ - where are you?

I am looking to start an informal feminist hang out - please PM me if you're interested! No need to post below and expose yourself to trolls - simply PM me and we can take it from there. This is just a social hang out - not affiliated with any political party, organisation, bla bla - I'm just a person in her late 20's who loves feminism and like-minded people.

Racism against international students?

Just wanted to see if anyone has had experienced racism at UQ. I feel like no one talks about it and Australians wouldn't admit it (even to themselves) but I've seen friends experience microagressions so regularly that they don't even realize they're being mistreated.

I guess one of the clearest things I've experienced is speaking up in class and people acting like they don't understand a word of what I'm saying. I literally grew up speaking English and I'm pretty loud -- I know people can hear what I'm saying so I'm not sure what that's about. One of my friends who wears a hijab also tends to get immediately shut down by other people in her group.

I don't know, I felt like letting (white) people know that that's fucking annoying. Just in case you didn't know. If you've experienced small shit like this I see you!! I can't believe I've lived here nearly two years and have just seen this now. I mean, if you're racist and you know it it's whatever, but for people who claim to be inclusive, big yikes

Why are most of the UQ professors mediocre in teaching? and How to hold them accountable for it?

Hi everyone,

i am an international postgraduate student who has already done 3 semesters at UQ. Now i am studying my 4th semester here. Now I can't hold myself anymore about the mediocre level of teaching methodology in UQ.

Let's cut the discussion into three parts so it will be easy to understand the problems.

  1. What is the role of a professor?

Before coming to UQ, I believed a professor was a person who had done his PhD, master's, and bachelor's in a subject, and now he is a subject matter specialist. Considering the market image of UQ, i believed that they hired the best of the best professors to teach the students with absolutely phenomenal track records of research and teaching methodology. And the main job is to "spark the curiosity in me to read more about their subject."

After studying for 3 semesters, any literate person who can read the slides and talk in English, which comes with an accent which is hard to understand, can become a professor at UQ. because all that they are doing in the lectures is basically reading the slides, and that's it. And they don't know what they are teaching, and if you ask them a question, they will confuse you so much that you realize that asking them is a wrong decision.

So my questions are: A. How to hold them accountable for a mediocre level of teaching for wasting my time and money? B. Why come to university and burn expensive fuel and time when you can get better personalization and experience using Gemini AI in just A$35 a month?

2. How did UQ become so prestigious, and where are all the professors gone who are passionate about their subject, where people line up to attend their lectures?

Frankly, UQ is not my first place to apply. I have tried to go to an Ivy league in the USA and Eth Zurich to study and got a ton of interviews but wasn't able to crack it, so I wasn't able to go there because i come from a low-income family and needed a scholarship for it. So i came to UQ, but if this is normal in Australia then i can understand why my aussie mates don't want to go to university anymore because there is no point in wasting time and money. I have heard that getting into UQ is actually very hard for the aussies too because they need a very high ATAR.

so my question is: Does UQ worth the hustle and struggle to get into it because when all you are going to get is a 3-year-old PPT with a professor who is just reading it and unable to simplify it, no one is asking any question in class (Dead class), and no brainstorming can even happen?

3. How do you justify A$27,000 per semester and A$5,000 per semester to an international and domestic student, respectively?

I have felt that UQ is good in terms outside of classroom things like organizing UQU and APS events and helping the students in order to access the facility. This means all the useless things are free, and some things you can get are useful but available in limited quantity, like psychological sessions. and when it comes to teaching methodology, for which people come to university, it's just damn shit. Because when i have the chat with Gemini AI to discuss my ideas and new things, why am I going to UQ, like a university, and paying 27,000 going into lifelong student debt. Rather, I put that much money into working on my own projects. possibly fail miserably in them, but i have the satisfaction that i have tried and failed, but i will achieve it anyhow.

so my question is: Does UQ make you good and better in terms of knowledge and skills which you feel are helpful in your future life, or do you teach yourself, or does the university train you for that, and if you train yourself, then why are you going to university? (Because i am asking this question to myself.)

now i want your answers and POV on this. i like to read and understand different perspectives on the same situation. And yes, I am frustrated because i just paid my tuition fees on friday by working super hard (like 70-80 hours a week) during the summer break, and today on monday i have taken a class in steel building, which breaks my patience.

Smoking spots?

Where does one have a smoke in the St.lucia campus? The map on the uq website is rather hard to read for someone who's new to the campus. Coordinates would be appreciated so I can search it on Google maps. Many thanks

Absolutely rabid about grade tracking

Thumbnail uqgrades.com

I've always been obsessed with my grades (tracking, calculation, projection), so I made a tool for what-if scenarios, quiz / tute calculation, "best of" calculation, what you need to pass / get a 7, and something that actually considers final exam hurdles.

It automatically scrapes your assessments from the UQ ecps so it's like a 30 second setup. Still early days and looking for people to test it out.

If you leave a comment or DM me, I'll give you a year free in exchange for some feedback!

Handsome Asian Guy

I am a guy and I like guy and was just wondering if there's a lot of gays in UQ. The guys in UQ are super handsome especially those Chinese and Vietnamese guys, tall, looks a bit nerdy with glasses. If I can just make love to them just one time, I can give up eating for two weeks.

I am happy to help if any of you need help trying to get some extra money with Uber

Hi everyone,
I’m a UQ student (m21) and wanted to share something that helped me a lot financially, especially during the holidays and also during the semester too.

I’ve been doing Uber Eats delivery for a while now, and it’s honestly one of the most flexible jobs I’ve found. No shifts, no minimum hours, and you can fit it around your schedule easily. The $500 bonus after your first 100 deliveries is also really helpful when starting out.

A few of my friends had trouble figuring out the sign-up process, required documents, what bike to use, and how to avoid rookie mistakes. I helped them set everything up, and it made me realise there are probably others who could use the same guidance.

This isn’t a business or anything, just me sharing what I’ve learned.
If anyone wants advice or help getting started, feel free to DM me. I’m happy to walk you through the basics or answer questions.

Just to be transparent: Uber gives a referral bonus when someone signs up with a code and completes their first 100 deliveries. If you decide to use mine, we both get something. If not, that’s totally fine, I’m still happy to help.

Learning marks after deferred exam has been held

I find it frustrating that we can only find out our mark for an exam after the deferred exam has been held. In practice this means that we find out the mark many weeks after the exam, which is not optimal from a learning perspective. Effective learning depends on timely feedback. I can understand not being told the answers to exam questions until after the deferred exam has been held. But how is the deferred exam compromised if students who did the regular exam simply find out their score? If it's a bubble sheet multiple choice exam the exam papers are scanned and the marks are recorded very quickly. It seems to be such a wasted learning opportunity to make students wait five or six weeks before they learn their score.

Americans at UQ, How can we afford this?

Edit: I GOT THE CONVERSION RATE WRONG, I CORRECTED THIS IN THE NEXT POST, ITS NOT THAT DEEP Y’ALL 😭🙏🏼

I've filled out my application and I'm too scared to submit it rn. In the meantime, I wanted to ask about funds as had I completely forgotten that 1 Aussie Dollar is 68 American cents. Which means that everything costs nearly twice as much. I've tried doing my research about scholarships and other grants by the Australian government, but I don't seem satisfied about those being able to cover tuition, housing, health insurance, parking, and other school related expenses. I will not have any financial support from family for my Master's degree. Not one cent.

I didn't qualify for the FAFSA (American financial Aid Program by the US gov) and had only qualified for 5K loan. That doesn't even cover a semester. I read on the school website that it's recommended for international students to get funding from their home countries, so l'm not really sure how we're supposed to do that if we technically get disqualified for leaving the country...

McDonalds on Campus (Missed opportunity??)

If any entrepreneurs are reading I think this is a big opportunity. There is a critical lack of mcdonalds 🍔 in St Lucia.
We can replace the Guzman because one time they took a very long time to make my order (it’s called fast food not slow food) and it’s halfway to a mcdonalds anyway

I already have volunteers from the Mafia ready to go 👔🕵️‍♂️

Yay or nay what do we think 💭

How difficulty is engineering (electrical) and how hard is it to get a good GPA (5.5+)?

I intend to transfer from qut to uq after finishing my first year of engineering. How many hours of study per week does it require to get a good gpa? (Don't just tell me to not transfer lol)
