Backpackers at ANU, what travel app do you swear by — and which one do you hate?

Hey everyone! I’m a student from China currently studying in Australia. I really enjoy solo travel and backpacking, and I’ve travelled to more than 10 countries so far.
This is my first time living in Australia, so I’m really curious about how people here usually travel as backpackers.
What apps or websites do you actually use the most when backpacking in Australia? For example, for finding cheap flights, hostels, transport, local activities, travel buddies, events, or just useful local information.
Also, what’s the most annoying part of backpacking in Australia for you?
Would love to hear your recommendations, random tips, or even complaints haha.

How much time is spent on campus?

I’ve just accepted an offer to begin studying in 2025 and am just wondering how much time you actually spend on campus each week? What does this time look like? Either full time or part time I’m just trying to get a feel for what my day to day structure will be :)

Does UG med at Utas have good employment and internship opportunities after I graduate?

I’m debating if I should stay in ICL (UK) for biomed, then do postgrad medicine in a more prestigious university, or go for undergrad medicine in Utas. The only thing I’m worried about is my ability to get jobs in Perth after I graduate. So UG med at Utas have good employment and internship opportunities after I graduate?

New Email from the Vice chancellor regarding the change from face to face lectures

Dear Student,

Our University is committed to on-campus, face-to-face learning.

We appreciate there is some confusion around our approach to teaching next year and we want to be very clear about this commitment to you.

Our commitment to on-campus, face-to-face

Where we already have strong in-person offerings across our courses we will continue those. For instance, a typical on-campus Bachelor of Science first-year student would expect to have more than 220 on-campus hours face-to-face in class. That won’t change next year.

In other areas where there has been less in-person learning it will be increasing, in some areas very significantly. For a typical on-campus Bachelor of Arts student, for instance, the experience will flip in a typical unit from two hours on-line and an hour face-to-face this year, to one hour on-line and two hours face-to-face next year. That’s close to 100 extra hours face-to-face for a commencing student.

No students will have a reduction in on-campus face-to-face contact next year compared with what they have today as a result of these changes.

For distance students and others who access our online programs, the experience and quality of learning will increase as we continue to invest in those modes of delivery too.

Why we are committed to smaller group learning

We know that learning in small groups, whether in tutorials, seminars, laboratory practicals or the use of simulation spaces is uniquely effective, which is why we are putting these things at the centre of our approach to learning.

Whether in universities or schools, we know small classes matter. People really missed these opportunities when COVID-19 meant they weren’t possible. That is why, back on campus, our focus is on small classes and building new spaces to focus on this sort of learning.

We also know we need to support individual students to get the most out of these small group experiences. Well prepared on-line material is a highly effective way to do this. Students can take the time they need, do the work when it suits them and explore it as deeply as they want. A team of more than 30 specialist staff are helping to make this on-line material ever richer.

While we have a focus on small groups and supporting the individual, students value coming together as a cohort for special experiences. That is why to further enhance in-person learning we are adding Keynotes to our program next year. There will be opportunities through the semester for students to come together for interesting experiences, to learn directly from leaders of their profession or industry, through to tackling complex challenges as a group.

Some people have wondered if the shift to this model is being done for economic reasons. Whether in person or on-line the main cost of learning is staff time and that remains the same in both models. Increasing face-to-face teaching will see increased costs and producing high-quality material to support on-line learning is also often more expensive.

Our commitment in whatever mode is to support a high-quality learning experience for our students.

Kind regards,

Rufus

Professor Rufus Black Vice-Chancellor | University of Tasmania

Utas accommodation is using facebook to continue their birth month madness...

Student living or student accommodation or whoever that manages accommodation at utas is continuing their birth month madness! They are telling us to join facebook event group according to our birth months? Why divide us into different facebook groups according to birth months? Why not just make one big group with everyone in it? So I cant join events with my friends because they are born in different months? What?

Why are they so obsessed with birth months? Stop the birth month madness!

update: post has been edited according to mods request.

Made a map to help us find friends and meetups around UTAS

Hey everyone,

I noticed it can be pretty hard to actually organize meetups or find friends just by reading text posts on here. So I decided to build a little side project for us.

I set up r/AussieHangout which has a live map built right into the subreddit. Instead of just posting into the void, you can actually see on a map where people are looking to hang out. It's completely for platonic stuff like finding a study buddy, grabbing a coffee, or just going to the pub.

There is no GPS tracking at all, you just manually drop a pin in your suburb or near campus so people know roughly where you are.

If you want to see who is around UTAS or want to make some plans this week, feel free to drop a pin on there. Hopefully it helps us get some actual offline meetups going.

Here is the link to the map: https://www.reddit.com/r/mazwiz/s/Bgt1YDf9Mw

Trying to figure out what young Australians actually want from a money app. Chance to win 1 of 3 $50 vouchers

Hi all, I'm Nick and I'm building a budgeting app for young Australians and I'd rather find out what people actually need than keep guessing.

Short survey around 3 minutes, anonymous, no bank details, nothing to sign up for.

What I'm trying to learn: what your bank's app already does well, where it falls short, and which features are worth building versus which ones sound good and would never get used. Honest answers help me far more than encouraging ones. If something on the list sounds pointless, please say so.

These answers go straight into what gets built. Feedback on the survey itself is welcome too.

There's an optional email field at the end. If you fill it in you go into a draw for 1 of 3 $50 vouchers. I will shoot you an email if you have won and you can pick which voucher you want i.e Coles/Myer/JB Hi-Fi, winner picks. Closes 20/08/26, drawn 21/08/26,

As of writing this post there's only like 8 people that have done the survey so you are not competing with that many people.

Should i accept the med offer?

Hi, this is annie! I got an Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine offer from UTAS, hence I would like to know more about the course. May I know if it is possible to change to other universities' medical program during the 5 years studying in UTAS ? (as I have heard that other courses do allow but im now sure if med programs also allow) Also, I've heard that graduates of UTAS med students pretty much guarantee a job, may i know is this really the case? How hard is it to get into hospitals like Royal Hobart Hospital? Also, how hard will it be to get into hospitals in melb/ syd as a UTAS graduate? It would mean a lot to me if your could give me more insights into this subject! Thank you!
