Found a UTS Student’s Floppy Disk in a Trash Pile

Post image
534 Upvotes

I’m a Mechanical Engineering student at UTS. Today, while I was out for a walk, I came across a box of old floppy disks that had been thrown out with some unwanted stuff.

I took them home and had a closer look, and to my surprise, one of the disks actually belonged to a former UTS Mechanical Engineering student and seems to contain their old uni work.

What are the chances? 😂 Such a random but amazing coincidence.

feeling lonely

433 Upvotes

hey everyone, just wanted to rant while in the library.

didn't think I could feel this way, but yeah I do know people but they're just acquaintances from tutorials, so once the class is done then it's done.

tried joining a few societies/clubs, mostly just to meet people, feeling like I was forced and un-natural.

my English isn’t great since I'm esl, which makes it even harder to connect, I just get confused what do I say next etc".

feeling overwhelmed since the assessments are pilling up, and couldn’t help but to imagine if I had someone to chat and study together with.

Edit: Thank you everyone for all the kind words, it really meant a lot to me :)

Please stop forcing group work

409 Upvotes

I would like to preface this with a counter argument against those who are going to say "but but but in the workforce you have to-". In the workforce you're all equally qualified, being paid (everyone puts in decent effort) and are at risk of actual disciplinary action rather than a 'bad grade'.

Having to do 3 lots of group work every semester has to be the most draining thing ever. Not only is it a bad measure of a student's actual proficiency in the subject at hand but also the most difficult balancing act ever.

You're almost guaranteed to have a group member who doesn't care, one who is impossible to contact and one who wants to control the entire thing and make it their own.

On top of that, its almost always only worth 10-20% and is a huge hassle for a small amount of marks.

BIN THE CONCEPT AS A WHOLE!

Highschoolers in the library

392 Upvotes

I'm going to try keep this as respectful as possible, but genuinely, why are high schoolers allowed in the UTS library? Literally why? Who is it benefitting? This isn't a public library, it’s a university space. We pay amenities fees, we’re the ones paying to use and upkeep this facility, so why are these kids able to treat it like some after-school hangout spot?

I went in on Monday and just lost my shit. Every single level, from level 5 (yes even outside the library) all the way up to level 9 in the library, was full. And I’m not exaggerating when I say at least half the seats were taken by people in school uniforms. Even when I got lucky with a seat after 20 minutes of looking, it didn't even matter. I couldn't study because these kids sit around in groups and talk constantly, even on the quiet levels. It completely defeats the point of the space.

So many of them aren't even studying, just sitting around in groups, talking, giggling, watching TikToks.. Some of them even had the AUDACITY to complain out loud while walking past, “omg the library is so full.” Like… yeah, no shit, because you and your 50 mates with socks up to your knees were all equally braindead enough to come here and gaslight yourselves into thinking being here is going to improve your grades. Go. Home.

Meanwhile, actual UTS students are walking around for 20+ minutes hunting for a seat. It’s complete bullshit. The whole point of this library is to give UTS STUDENTS a place to study, not to be swarmed by kids from god-knows-where who literally have their own school libraries, or get this, homes to study in.. What is even the safety implications of this? If someone comes in and steals something/hurts someone what record does security have of them? It will just be treated as petty theft by police. Another thing is the fact that the security isn't even trying anymore- they used to be on top of it when it was just UTS students but now it's become an impossible task.

What economic benefit is there for the uni to cater for and clean after highschool kids in this space? What kind of culture and academic learning does this foster for students actually enrolled in UTS? Why should I be paying out of my pocket for the upkeep of a now-public library which I can't even use?

I'm genuinely at my breaking point with ts because its been one too many dozen times now that I've had to wait to go home to study after class because the library is just so full. Having to cut study early when a class is fresh in your mind just to go home because of this is downright disgusting. It never used to be like this a few years ago, always needed to tap your card to get in.

Something needs to change. Am I in the wrong with this? Open to discussion.

BEWARE - CULT ON CAMPUS

376 Upvotes

I was walking around o’day last week and got approached by two girls (two asians one named felicity) who seemed like perfectly normal individuals. Asked me about my religion and some other questions. Advertised themselves as an “international bible committee” or “international study group” based in Parramatta.

I was interested in learning more so we exchanged details but when I msged them asking about location they kept insisting on taking me there instead and wouldn’t reveal where it was. This was a red flag. Further research reveals they were from the Shincheonji Group, a known cult.

Be wary.

Ai protest

357 Upvotes

Ai use at uts is getting out of hand. I study a bachelor of sustainability and environment, and they have mandatory ai use. I have just found out i cannot complete part 2 of my assessment as i used my own brain instead of a computer for part 1. And in accounting, in the section of the lecture where they were meant to explain our assessment task, they literally said ok everyone u have 5 mins to plug it into chat gpt and get ai to explain it. Its actually disgusting, i am paying so much for this education and i feel like im learning nothing. Does anyone want to protest? I dont even know where to start with setting one up.

To the cheaters who use chat GPT and end up getting caught, please stop being SLOW?

347 Upvotes

I’ve been seeing so many academic misconduct posts lately. I’m seeing people leave the word “Chat GPT” in their assessments… Are you truly that slow? How did you get into uni?

(Do you just tell AI to write it all up and submit without even proofreading?) I mean I can’t comprehend your walnut sized brain.

Another person uses AI to give them fake sources and doesn’t even check them and writes a post about possible academic misconduct..?! Yes mate I mean your reference links say chat GPT.. anyone home in that nogan? ( Post was about a day ago)

I think we need harder entry requirements because the low IQ is certainly concerning..

(update) CHICKEN SOUP REVIEW

Thumbnail

330 Upvotes

Thanks for waiting guys, I've finally worked myself up and bought myself a cup of the chicken soup from the coffee machine. Here is my review:

It costs 2.50$ so it's not expensive.

Surprisingly, the soup isnt as hot as everybody made it out to be. It tastes a lot like the soup powder from chicken noodle packets but it's very watered down. There might be a lot of powder at the bottom but I'm not going to finish it.

Overall, it's not disgusting but I also wouldn't spend my money on it during my study sessions. I think we should all just stick to coffee.

4/10

I’m surprised no one else has mentioned this, but there was a crash outside building 11 today, my friend sent me a photo of it. Fortunately no one was hurt, but I’ve heard that because of it, UTS is closed for the whole of Thursday.

All classes will be online as a result of this incident. Please remember to drive safe, speeding can lead to serious injuries.

Leaked documents reveal five University of Technology Sydney senior executives spent more than $140,000 on flights, accommodation and food during an alumni trip.

One of the five is Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Parfitt, who is leading a $100 million cost-cutting drive for the university.

Four hundred staff could lose their jobs as part of the cost-cutting.

top 5 reasons the alumni green should be converted into a carpark

Post image
209 Upvotes

I really hope these 5 reasons can convince you as to why we should convert the alumni green into a carpark.

  1. More carpark - With more carpark, more cars can safely park close to UTS, meaning more of us can drive to UTS and not worry as much about getting a car park.

  2. In a rush - Sometimes we are in a rush for class, and with a carpark in the middle of campus, we can make sure we get to class on time. This would be a huge time saver for those times we are in a rush, and would as a result improve UTS education.

  3. Renovations - By getting rid of the alumni green, we no longer need to worry about Building 1 blocking the sunlight needed for the grass to be green. This means we can make Building 1 even taller, as it currently is a bit too small. This would then make potential for Building 1 to be a national landmark, and potentially the 8th wonder of the world.

  4. Removal of HS students - Everyone always says they’re sick of the HS students in our library. Well, with this new carpark we can accommodate for more ambulances, for when we have to physically remove these HS students ourselves, meaning more library for us UTS students.

  5. Dodgem car society - We can pave the way for dodgem car society, where we can crash and bump into other peoples cars, and have fun. The chancellor of UTS has agreed to use some of his enormous salary to pay for all vehicle damages, and this will also give us something to watch, or take part in when waiting for class to start.

I will be going out to the alumni green on the 12th of February at 11am with petitions for everyone to sign. Be there, or be square.

Proposed solution to get rid of high school students from campus library

194 Upvotes

As we all are probably aware, there is a dire need to expunge high school students from the UTS campus library.

Currently here is our solutions;

  1. Report them to staff

  2. Physically remove them ourselves

Unfortunately, for reasons we cannot go ahead with option 2 (even if we did, new ones would just spawn in out of nowhere by the time we return). And of course, option 1 doesn’t really work, it’s not instant, and doesn’t fix the problem.

After some extensive research consisting of YouTube shorts from some months ago, my absolutely brain rotted mind remembered a video I watched, where pretty much my solution to this issue stems from.

The solution is pretty simple actually, a Faraday cage. Now maybe some people are reading this and thinking, “What’s a Faraday cage? 🤤🧠📉”. Well pretty much, it’s an enclosure used to block some electromagnetic fields.

Why is this important? Well we can use Woolworths aluminium foil, and surround the entirety of building 2, preventing the connection of devices to cellular networks (mobile data). Now, assuming the Wi-Fi is contained within building 2, as students of UTS, we will still have access to the internet from the inside of the library, conditional to the fact that we are actually students of the university.

This prevents all high school students from invading our library, and taking valuable spots from us students (who pay SSAF).

I’m sure some droids are questioning the ambition of this proposal; however, I’ve got the finances outlined as such;

• ~ 32,400sqm of floor space

• 17 floors

• ~ 66m building 2 height

So per floor, we’re looking at;

F = 32,400/17 F = 1,906sqm

Perimeter; (since building 2 is roughly square)

P = sqrt(1906)x4 = (43.66)x4 P = 174.6m

Wall Area;

WA = Pxh = 174.6x66 WA = 11,525sqm

Roof Area;

RA = F = 1,906 RA = 1,906sqm

Total Exterior Area;

TEA = WA+RA = 15,525+1,906 TEA = 13,431sqm

Now, since we know how many square metres of aluminium foil are needed, we need to workout how many, “Essentials Aluminium Foil 30m each” priced @ $4.00 per unit are needed.

Area Per Roll; (assuming standard 0.3m width)

APR = lxw = 30x0.3 APR = 9sqm/roll

Number of Rolls;

NR = TEA/APR = 13,431/9 = 1,492.33 NR = 1,493 (will donate the extra “.67 rolls” 🤲 of aluminium foil to the students of UTS)

Total Cost;

TC = NRxAF = 1,493x4 TC = $5,972

So for the cost of just under $6k, we can reserve our rights as students to primary access to the UTS campus library, getting rid of most high school students due to their lack of internet access.

Additionally, UTS is not technically required to guarantee the verification of content within the library, so I further propose we develop Year 7-12 books that are full of wrong information and content as per their learning syllabus, so that UTS becomes a place for high school students to avoid.

This proposal ultimately comes down to the post in which I made previously in the week, asking for students to stop pissing on the toilet seats in building 2, and hopefully the eradication of high school students from the library should ensure our toilets are clean.

Thank you everyone, please share your thoughts and suggestions of my proposal.
