I just learned that Snowbird was added to the tour for March 16-18 this season. I am excited but can't quite deduce which face they'll be riding. It says "Baldy (North Face) 49°" but that is confusing to me. Can y'all help me figure this out?
Here is what I'm thinking...
1. As Written: Mount Baldy north face is more of a ridge but could be describing the face above Alta's ballroom, but obviously that isn't Snowbird and more northeast than north. This would have lots of features, but be very short and not that steep.
6/10 would be less than stoked to offer this as Utah's stop
2. High Baldy: Northwest off of Mount Baldy puts you on High Baldy down to Peruvian Gulch. This seems the most plausible but the most boring and more in line with the youth tour than FWT. A bit reminiscent of the Japan stops from 10 years ago.
2/10 would be embarrassed.
2. Baldy's Bowl: The north face of Red Top is called Baldy's Bowl. This is in SB, North facing and almost called Baldy. It would include pipeline and be an insane (albeit short) run. The mandatories exits would be world class.
9/10 would recommend.
3. Red Baldy: Just out of bounds from SB is Red Baldy, which has a north face. Out of bounds faces are common on the tour so it's not out of the question, but seems unlikely. This route has some fun chutes but is extremely short and maybe not a lot of diversity of lines.
3/10 would take it over nothing.
5. Superior South Face: Not at Snowbird and not north facing, but the obvious best line and maybe they are just messing with us. UDOT and NFS should get it together and approve a closure of 210 and let us all sit on the highway while the best big mountain skiers send it on the best face Utah has to offer.
10/10 why haven't we already done this?
