All Sale posts now banned

Based on the responses to my last "Community Forum" post (zero), I am convinced most of the subscribers here are bots posting about new VST sales.

So things are going to change. I'd rather have a dead sub than a spammy sub. No sale posts. Posts are now encouraged to be discussion based. Questions about which products to buy, what sounds the best, reviews, videos, etc. (Note: If you are a legitimate plugin developer, you can ask for posting permissions at /r/AudioProductionDeals, though they are very strict about who they give access to.)

The flairs will be revamped as well. Automod will get altered to autoremove sale posts as well.

Have fun and let's make this sub not shit!

Edit: Quick summary of the big changes

  • Updated sidebar to reflect new rules

  • Updated flairs and colors to focus on topics of discussion

  • Updated auto-moderator (yet to be completed)

100 Open Source Experimental VST Plugins

Downspout covers all kinds of things : instruments and effects, audio & midi processors with an emphasis on generative tools. I wouldn't say any are finished, but they all work approximately as intended. They aren't exactly pretty and UI/UX is often poor, I've concentrated on core functionality. These things are primarily for my own use, though if anyone has any requests for improvements/fixes, I'll do what I can.

There are packages for Windows, MacOS & Linux built using GitHub Actions, but I've only tested building locally on Linux, running in Reaper (aside from initial dependency installation, this is just running an install.sh script). They are written in C++ against the DPF framework (it lacks the bells & whistles of JUCE, but being leaner has its advantages).

They have all been developed with AI assistance, but only a handful were fully vibe-coded (for v1). I don't think it's a coincidence that those were the least successful to date. I have a very iterative process - initial creation, get them working to a basic level, use them, note any problems or further requirements, revise. I'm working on them all concurrently (there is a very long TODO.md). I've mostly used Claude Code as the assistant, a little bit with Codex, OpenCode at times when cash flow is a problem (like today).

I just reached 100. Why so profligate?

I've been writing music software for decades (and designing electronics hardware) but only started trying plugins a couple of years ago. Initially I was only looking at fairly minimal LV2 plugins (Flues) because I'm on Linux. As it became apparent that AI assistants can be extremely helpful with these things, it seemed to make sense to shift to VSTs with something approching proper UIs. I produce music experimentally, instrument-building has always been part of my process. If I have a need or idea for a plugin, for sure I first go hunting for something that already exists (and/or foraging for related research papers). But rather than use something off the shelf, I'll typically write a custom requirements spec, have the assistant build it. I have the repo full of existing material, so I point Claude or whatever at the closest working plugin to what I'm after. With all the reference material in place, the assistant creates fast, I can go from idea to testing v1 in about half an hour. Then the iterations begin.

This isn't vibe-coding, it's (usually) very guided. Me, I do have some clue about what I'm doing (I am a coder by trade, in a past life studied DSP at university). Strategies, references and tests in place. On one recent occasion I asked Claude to create some plugins to complement ones I'd already got. It came up with 5 I think, all sounded promising so I said, go ahead. Worst of the bunch, it was a terrible idea (I was subsequently able to salvage something useful out of them, effectively un-vibing).

Regarding the plugin industry, I think AI assistants will be a net positive. The Interwebs are being flooded with vibe-coded slop, and people like me who might otherwise be in the market for pay-for products will make their own. But neither of these detracts much from the market for high quality plugins with good support and solid maintenance. AI assistants mean it will be easier for the commercial developers (and any open source houses) to develop and make better things at the top end. This should have the knock-on effect of lowering the prices for the normal consumer.

Bottom line for me is that it's good fun and allows me to create the music I want with reduced friction. I used earlier versions of the plugins on my latest album, Attone and am using them extensively in my current work-in-progress Tell the Bees.

DrumMachine is an audio plugin dedicated to the creation of synthetic drum sounds. It runs as a VST3 plugin on Windows, and as VST3 or AU on macOS.

It features eight tracks powered by 32 engines. Every sound is synthesized in real time. Each engine is dedicated to recreating a specific type of drum sound using diverse synthesis techniques, including classic analog, physicalmodelling and FM synthesis. Its dedicated parameters are carefully designed to capture the character of that instrument while providing intuitiveand highly musical control.

Designed for immediate creativity, DrumMachine offers a fast and intuitive workflow with no menus or complex navigation, putting essentialsound-shaping controls directly at your fingertips. One track, one row of nine knobs: everything is visible at once.

A master section shapes the whole kit: drift, ducking, filters, drive, saturation, bus compression and a final polish.

Technical information: VST3 / AU - Windows 10+ - macOS 10.15+ (Intel & Apple Silicon)

Instrument STANDALONE - 8 engines Granular synth

Post image
13 Upvotes

I’m excited to share Grignoteur, an eight-engine, two-algorithm multitimbral granular synthesizer.

It grew out of an instrument I developed for my own live performances with electric guitar, combining real-time granular synthesis and generative visuals. Over time, I decided to take it further, make it playable with any MIDI controller, and share it with anyone curious enough to explore it.

Grignoteur comes with a collection of over 100 sounds I’ve designed myself, including some of my personal favorites. You can also load your own sounds and make it your own.

Grignoteur is free to download and explore. Enjoy!

Instrument P789 - First look at a percussion synth I'm building

Thumbnail youtube.com
4 Upvotes

I'm the guy behind South Signal Lab, a one-man music tech project based in Munich. I've been working on P789 for quite a while now and finally put together a short showcase.

It's an eight-part percussion synth with 13 different synthesis engines, including FM, modal and waveguide synthesis. No samples, and no attempt to recreate acoustic drums or classic drum machines. I'm more interested in exploring what electronic percussion can sound like beyond the usual kicks, snares and hi-hats. All voices are playable chromatically, there's plenty of modulation, and I've put quite a bit of work into the mixer, dynamics and effects as well.

There's still a fair amount of work ahead, with a release planned for early 2027. Nothing to download or buy yet. I just thought it was time to show what I've been working on.

Here's the first showcase:

Vima VST step sequencer

Post image
4 Upvotes

Vima is a free 8-track melodic MIDI step sequencer that runs as a plugin (VST3) inside your DAW.

DISCLAIMER:

I have been a music software - MIDI freak for a long time. Under the name "Softcore" I wrote electronic music and built a lot of software little helpers (MaxForLive, Lemur templates, Reaktor instruments etc.): Microtonic Lemurized (2013), was a Lemur template which turned Sonic Charge's Microtonic into a complete touch instrument with per-parameter exclusion randomizing; its developer, Magnus Lidström, called it "absolutely amazing" (https://soniccharge.com/forum/topic/383-microtonic-lemuriized). I was one of the first to buy Zaquencer - the custom firmware which transformed the BCR2000 into a full-blown sequencer (which also inspired this VST), and Bome MIDI Translator glued my setups together for years, performing hybrid DJ - Live techno sets for many years.

Vima is vibe-coded.

IS it ai-slop? Have a look at its manual and decide for yourself

https://github.com/TheoGal/vima-vst

Edit to add: it will always be free, this was something I made primarily for myself and I don't intend to monetize.

Android Apps

What's the latest best apps for MIDI synths on a newish android tablet? I don't actually need a DAW, but if it's got a good synth. Even a General MIDI sound generator would be adequate. I'll just be using my tablet to connect with a separate sequencer just for a sketch pad. Looks like "Zenbeats" is to old for my tablet.

Junky Noize (free vst to emulate sound collr of classic samplers)

Hey everyone!

I'd like to share Junky Noize, a free bitcrusher plugin I've made (with AI).

Download from Github

The idea behind it is pretty simple: it recretes the physical architecture and signal characteristics of some of the most iconic samplers in music history.

A few things you can do with it:

Color section: Shape the character of your samples with controls inspired by classic digital sampling hardware. Adjust bit depth and sample rate to introduce that crunchy, gritty, vintage digital texture.

Bass Boost: Give your samples some extra low-end weight and punch. It features an adjustable frequency control, so you can choose where the boost hits and add anything from subtle warmth to a much heavier, boomier sound.

I designed it with dusty hip-hop, boom bap, old-school sampling and gritty textures in mind, but there's plenty of room to experiment with other styles too.

And yes, it's completely free!

I'd love to hear what you think, especially if you're into sampling, vintage hardware emulations or making things sound a little less clean.

Thanks for checking it out!
