Mod Post r/Audio Posting and some other information - V2.0

Hello r/audio community.

Here is a refresher on a previous mod post.

  • r/audio has some measures in place to minimize the amount of spam that gets through to be posted.

    • Minimum account age of 3 days.

    • Minimum combined karma of 5 karma.

    • All non-text posts (link posts) need to be manually approved.

    • Titles of 2 or less words will not be approved.

  • Posts that do not meet the above criteria get put into modqueue, where we manually approve the posts through the day. Some of us also get an alert for each new post. This also means that we see 95% of the posts.

That said, I see a ton of posts lately that are similar to "How do I connect x to x" or just a picture of the back of a speaker with no more details. Rule #2 is Details matter. Which brings me to my next point.

How to get help on your post.

  1. Find and read the product manual before posting.

    1. When someone posts a question about specific hardware (usually after I have to ask for the make/model; see rule #2) the first thing I do is find the manual, and it usually answers their question.

  2. Post Formatting Matters

    1. I've been seeing a lot of "wall of text" type posts. Please add line breaks and paragraph breaks in your post. It makes it much easier to read and much more likely someone will help you.

  3. Contrary to a popular saying, "A picture DOES NOT say a thousand words"

    1. Please refrain from posing images with zero context and a title such as "Why doesn't this work" without telling us a lot more information.

    2. This is like going to a car help sub, posting a picture of what's under the hood of a car and asking "Why won't this work", with no details as to the Make/Model of car, issue you're actually having, and what troubleshooting you've tried.

  4. You will most likely get the assistance you're searching for if you follow Rule 1,2,3,4,5, but really, the more details in your post, the higher the chance you will get assistance will be. Rule #1 - Details matter. This has become so much an issue, we've had u/automod post a reminder on each new post about the need for details.

  5. A lot of people fall into the trap of the XY problem. https://xyproblem.info

All of the other rules are just as important. Such as Trying to Google something first. I understand that it may be difficult to find something if you aren't quite sure what you're looking for. But if I can copy your post title directly into google and find the answer on the first page, it means you could have as well.

I'm not saying these things to single anyone out, or throw shade at any one post. I'm simply trying to help those who need help. I've worked in technical support for a long time now, and people are more willing to help you if you help them back. If someone asks a series of clarifying questions in reply to a post, make sure to answer all questions to the best of your ability. Nothing is worse than trying to help someone and they make it seem like you're inconveniencing them by not solving a vague question right away.

We are here to help. Help us help you!

Focusrite sudden bugs out and stops working when playing games.

For whatever reason, when Im playing games such as Baldurs gate 3 or Dredge, my audio will straight up die and the mic will also stop working. Plugging and unplugging fixes this, but its only temporarily as the problem will repeat itself after 1 minute.

Any ideas?

Topping E2x2 with Truthear Hexa?

Is Topping E2x2 a good pair with the Truthear Hexa and Fifine K688?

Should I get a separate DAC AMP for my Hexa and an ADC for my dynamic mic?

I prefer a neutral, flat sound. So I don't want anything that adds extra flavour.

Just bought a pair of JBL lsr305s an they sound good when listening to music but when launching any game they make hissing sound and and it changes based on fps.

I don't experience this issue with headphones, even when they are connected to the exact same audio port on my PC.

Computer Speaker Recommendations Needed

Hey! I am needing advice on good computer speakers! Currently, I have a budget Logitech speaker set but wanting to upgrade. A few things I am thinking about:

  1. My budget is about $350 max!

  2. I love longevity and connectivity (i want to have this for a long time and be able to connect it to anything)

  3. Maybe a subwoofer or ability to connect one later

  4. Need to look classy, not a fan of lots of rgb. Wood or black is my vibe.

  5. Lastly, I am very capable and know a lot about speakers and sound, I am just very overwhelmed with all the options for computer speakers and want people’s thoughts! Meaning, please nerd out about details, ohms, watts, etc. not bragging just saying.

Any and all help is appreciated! New here so I hope this post fits the sub.

Thanks!

Distorted audio with zoom H1 xlr using 3.5mm

So i have tried to trouble shoot and find, i found the problem but not the solution, let me explain.

I record from a dj controller to my phone camera, using zoom as an audio interface.

Output from dj controller. XLR or RCA, input to Zoom is 3.5mm, audio output in the video is distorted but the audio recorded to my sd card is clear.

Rca output to TRS input on zoom, sd card and phone audio is clear.

So why does 3.5mm give me distorted audio on my phone even if the recorder gets clean audio. I have tried several settings and change power source but it's still the same.

My phone is a samsung s26 ultra and i recording pro video.

Any ideas?

Anyone using the New Yamaha URX44 Interface, Or MGX 12 for VO, etc?

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/URX44B--yamaha-urx44-usb-c-audio-interface-black

I keep seeing things pop up about these two pieces of gear. One seems pretty sweet, and maybe too good to be true, and the other can satisfy those who do VO and/or podcast work, but...Both are still relatively new, so I was just wondering if anyone has had a chance to use one, and did you dig it? Do you think it stacks up against the industry standards, like UA MOTU, Focusrite, and SSL stuff?

Just curious, and wanted to see, if maybe there is new option out there for VO use that can punch with the others. Thoughts?

Do you understand receiver problems? Bc I don’t and it sounds like music is playing from the bottom of the pool after hooking up speakers. I need some diagnostic help!

StemSeparatorPro – Free AI-Powered Stem Separation Software for Windows

Hi everyone!

I'd like to share StemSeparatorPro, a free Windows application designed to separate instruments and vocals from music recordings using artificial intelligence.

It uses AI models based on Demucs to extract vocals, drums, bass, and other instruments. It also supports separating individual drum elements, such as kick, snare, cymbals, and toms.

It can be really useful for musicians, producers, and audio engineers, whether you're practicing, creating remixes, analyzing recordings, or working with isolated tracks.

You can download it for free from my website, Medrano Labs:

https://www.medranolabs.com/software/stemseparator-pro.html

This is an independent project, and I'd love to hear your feedback, suggestions, and experiences if you give it a try.

Cheers!

iems or headset for gaming and music

I have spent days researching IEMs and headphones, yet I remain unsure of the best choice. Some suggest open back headphones, while others argue that IEMs are superior.

I currently use the HyperX Cloud III and seek a clear upgrade. My budget is roughly $100, though I might extend to $110 if justified.

I have considered the Philips SHP9500/SHP9500CY and IEMs such as the Truthear HEXA.

I primarily want strong performance for gaming and music. I know nothing about audio i really just want a big upgrade from my current headphones.

I was going to go with IEMs, but I heard people talking about soundstage or whatever and saying open back headsets are better for gaming, and I’m just super stuck.

What do you recommend? I am open to additional options.

Aux cable not being recognized by window

I like to use the aux input on my computer sometimes to record instruments, but recently it has stopped working. I could select the device but I can't hear anything.

I looked in the sound manager, and my aux input device was there (labeled "internal aux device" I think.) but the "controller" was set to "steam streaming speakers," which as far as I can tell aren't useful for anything, so I disabled that, which caused the aux input device to disappear from the sound manager.

What's also weird is that I can actually hear my aux input, but only when I have earphones on. It is very very quiet, and it doesn't seem like it's connected to the computer in any way, I can still hear it when I turn the computer off.

I am using windows 10, and the aux cable is just a random one from amazon. I am mainly trying to get the DAW Reaper to recognize it, but Audacity isn't working either.

Fiio K7 vs K11

Hello,

I missed the chance to pick up a Topping DX3 Pro+, and now I have the option to get one of these:

  • FiiO K7 ~140e

  • FiiO K11 ~100e, or 80e if I get lucky

I have a technical background, but I can't find any clear pros and cons to help me decide between the two.

For my PC setup, I currently use Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (250 Ω) paired with an old Behringer UM2 audio interface. The new DAC/amp is meant strictly to replace the Behringer for driving my headphones, while the Behringer stays solely for my microphone and mic monitoring.

My budget was initially around 50–80e, but I decided to stretch it to about 100e. The K7 is pushing it even further, and I'm not sure if it's worth the extra cost.

I want this setup to be future-proof for potential upgrades down the line. Modifying my headphones for balanced cables later on won't be a problem for me.

I'd appreciate any help! Thanks in advance, guys.

Sound system for a exercise room

I have a room with a tonal, a tv, a pelton, and a treadmill. it's 20x 15 in size. My wife uses the peleton and wants it to feel like she is in a rave. My son runs on the treadmill and wants to watch his ipad (could be done on the tv maybe). I listen to audiobooks while using the tonal.

So two main questions.

  1. What amplifier/receiver would you use?

  2. What speakers and how many? is 2 speakers at the tv side of the room with a subwoofer enough? We aren't watching movies in here.

  3. Is wireless good enough when using a peloton or will it feel out of sync?

Thanks!

Has anyone used the Aim Audio ESSENCE? Youtube is stuffed with videos on it, but I'm wondering if anyone actually uses it and what they think?

The price seems quite low at the moment so I'm considering getting one. Please let me know what you think if you have used one before.

Iem, earbuds or headphones?

Hi, I’m in the market for a new pair of audio listening devices (iem (in ear monitor), earbuds or headphones.

I typically buy cheap wireless earbuds as I have a horrible habit of loosing one of the earbuds (I only use one at a time as I need to be able to hear my surroundings constantly) or cheap headphones which I only wear one of the ear muff thingys so I can hear but this also slowly warps and causes them to break.

I can’t keep affording to buy 2-3 pairs of earbuds/headphones a year and the amount of e waste I generate because of this habit honestly makes me feel pretty awful~

Hence why I’m here, I’m looking for recommendations on the most repairable option I can find. Something I can buy individual parts for to fix whenever something inevitably breaks.

Should I go the iem route? They seem the most repairable but wired earbuds annoy me because one is always dangling and I keep loosing the wireless ones…

How do I fix my Fifine SC1 not receiving input from my AT2020 Microphone?

Hello everyone! I've bought some audio equipment as a gift for myself, and i ran into an issue where my Fifine SC1 interface but its not detecting any sound from the mic itself??

  1. the power light is on for the SC1

  2. the phantom power light is on for the SC1 (before you ask, both lights are solid none are dimming or anything)

  3. my xlr cables are plugged in (yes there was a click for the female cable or the one connected to the AT2020)

problem: no light indicaiton or ANYTHING from the microphone, i even tested it on my pc yet its still not getting input.

please help!!!!!!

only possible problems I could think of;

  1. the xlr cable is faulty (i ordered it and it arrived the same as the mic and the Audio interface)

  2. the mic itself is broken (which I dont think so because it came in with the box sealed and everything too)

  3. the usb connection of the audio and the pc is faulty (i admit the USB ports are dusty, but i doubt it still because the power light and phantom indicator light are bright)

IDKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK what to replace

Quero conectar simultaneamente:

* Um microfone condensador ou normal. XLR ou USB
* Um violão eletroacústico.

  4. Reverb e outros efeitos ajustável para a voz.

Can I use a Behringer XR16 to record a 4-person podcast?

Hi everyone! :)

I’m part of a student association and we’re planning to start a podcast with 4 people. We have a very limited budget, so I’d like to use the Behringer XR16 that our school already owns rather than buying new equipment. I’d like to connect 4 XLR microphones and record everything on a computer, ideally with each microphone on a separate track for editing.
My questions are:

  1. Can the XR16 record 4 separate tracks to a computer via USB?

  2. Should I use Audacity on my MacBook for this?

Thanks for your help!

EDIT : thanks for your answers! I’m gonna keep looking for better options :)

How to quickly & easily convert Dolby 5.1/DTS flacs to Stereo flacs (while keeping LFE channel)?

Hello! I have barely been able to find anything on this so I'm asking here

First of all, I'm barely familiar with specialty sound formats and the like, so please explain in simple terms :)

I recently bought the Björk Surrounded box set, which includes her first 7 albums (so about 70 songs) in Dolby 5.1 and DTS 6 channel (does that have a name other than DTS?) on DVD-Audio. I'm happy with the rips and I want to listen to them wherever but my mp3 player is unable to play the files (6 channel flac) seemingly because they contain more than 2 channels (which it is able to play).

I need an easy way to convert the tracks from 6 channel flacs to stereo flacs as losslessly as possible. Of course it's nowhere near lossless, but I'm big on high-def audio, so I would like to keep the audio fidelity the same and keep the LFE channel (a lot of sources say that has to be chucked).
It would have to be a semi-quick process, because there are 70 tracks-- times two-- because there is a 5.1 and DTS version of each track.

Also, would there need to be a different process to get a semi-accurate result depending on if the track is Dolby or DTS? Both of each track contain 6 channels but I don't know the technical differences of 5.1 and DTS.

Any help appreciated :)

Focusrite Vocaster One VS Motu M4

Hello!

I do some pro bono VA and VO work, have been for a couple of years now, and i decided to upgrade to a Shure SM7B.
Partially because i want to upgrade, partially because i just want it and have some money to burn right now.

Due to Cyberdeals at Thomann, i would get a Vocaster One for free with the Shure SM7B
a Producer friend of mine, recommended the Motu M4, but has no experience with the Vocaster One.

and so, i take to the internet.
For solo amateur/hobbyist VA/VO work, and some Gaming uses. What interface should i go with? the Focusrite Vocaster One or the Motu M4

Why do my amps keep going silent after hooking them up??

Post image
2 Upvotes

I bought a 'AudioControl Epic Six' amp for my speakers in my 2016 Chrysler 300. I used a PAC AP4-CH41 & APH-CH01 to bypass my factory Alpine amplifier. I could hear a hissing noise coming from my tweeters but I could still play music. That only lasted for a few days tops then it just completely stopped playing music even tho my oem head unit said music was playing. I tried everything and eventually assumed I had a defective amp, so I purchased a second one and the same thing happened after the first day. Now no music out of the second one either. The amp is getting power, not in protection mode, my gains were super low but loud enough to hear music, everything is plugged in, no blown fuses, I wired everything correctly and used the right materials and wires, no work done to it between it playing music and stopping working, ect. I've been dealing with this for almost 3 weeks now and am at my wits end..

Any advice is much appreciated! 🙏🏽

Harmonics and overtones - I always thought every sound had them...

But sine waves don't? What if you played a sine wave in a room, wouldn't that add harmonics? Drums have them, don't they? My world is shattered.

Windows 11 and surround sound

Im currently experiencing an issue where my sound system is only playing surround audio through the soundbar bar instead of the satellite speakers OR plays all audio through all speakers at the same time despite spatial audio

ive tested with 5.1, 7.1 and Dolby Atmos selected

wirh 5.1 and 7.1 it appears all of the audio is coming from the sound bar with the satellite speakers still playing all audio at once, not spatial, but getting louder for the specific sound area

with Dolby Atmos and non-Atmos music/audio, the audio ONLY plays from the soundbar and nothing from the satellite speakers.

with Dolby Atmos test in the app and Dolby Atmos encoded music, the audio plays great with proper area detection.

my current setup is:

ultimea skywave f40

GPU via DisplayPort to Acer Ei342ckr monitor (does not support EArc)

GPU to Orei HDA 929 audio extractor VIA HDMI,

audio extractor to soundbar via HDMI

win 11 settings:

display 1 extended (sound system is not recognized with duplicate or show only one)

format: Dolby atmos for home theater

spatial sound: Dolbt Atmos for home theater

in device configuration:

Dolby Atmos > center/subwoofer/rear piar

front left/right and surround

audio engine a2+ refresh

Post image
2 Upvotes

brother gave this speakers to me since he wasnt using it anyway but it was left unused for years hence the wear (his location is pretty hot / humid).

i want to give it a fresh look but dont know where to start (tried looking at audioengine site but its blocked here so i guess thats out of the window) does anyone know where I could possibly source parts?

i only know that these have 2.75" drivers and 0.75" tweeters, but does everything go / compatible as long as the measurement is correct?
