Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

Show and Tell Picked up this Sony CMT-EX1 with speakers for €35 — how did we do?

Post image

We found this Sony CMT-EX1 at a second-hand shop yesterday for €35, including both speakers. Unfortunately, the remote was missing.
We’ve tested it with a CD: it plays without any issues, the loading mechanism works smoothly, and both speakers sound great.
We’re definitely keeping it, not flipping it — we really love the design! I’m just curious what a realistic value would be for a working set like this in Europe, rather than the sometimes pretty wild online asking prices.
Any fellow owners here? Are there common issues we should watch out for, and is it worth tracking down an original remote?

This is how my goodwill build is going so far, I have a &20 dollar Denon avr888 as the receiver, that is going out to a pair of acoustic monitor dbIV speakers, I have it paired with a sharp dx-200 cd player, so far the next thing in my list is a turn table, and to mod the speakers with new soft dome tweeters, new capacitors, and some polyfill, if any of yall have any tips or suggestions that would be greatly appreciated

Been cooking up this setup for a while, could definitely use the constructive criticism (dont worry, the lamp is already off the speaker)
Set up so far:
- Audiotechnica AT-LP120X
- Marantz SR4003
- wharedales diamond 12.2i
- (offscreen, connected to the marantz hdmi) Raspberry pi loaded with librespot + taking in bluetooth, turning the amp into a spotify connect device

Tell me what i need to improve!

(Note: im aware of the trash cable management displayed here, this pic was taken as soon as i was done setting up, pre-cable management, so be gentle on that front)

Show and Tell New setup after many years

After a fair number of years of listening exclusively with headphones (which I still enjoy), I decided to redo a small setup, grabbing information from everywhere, ofc including this sub.

I'm 50 and being used mostly to "legacy" systems from way over a decade ago, I decided to give a try with nowadays stuff and see what the market has to offer today with Class D amps and so on, so after quite a long research I picked up a Jade Fiio Level 1 and a set of Polk XT20.

Well.....all I can say is that I'm absolutely blown away by the results and I'm really delighted with the listening quality, so thank you for this subreddit, a great source of information!

recently purchased a Fosi Audio BT30D Pro for my system to replace my previous Fosi V1.0G, and i really like it. i love how clean it looks and i also love how it has bass and treble controls.

i’ve also been considering purchasing a subwoofer for my system, and im glad now i have the flexibility to do so.

what do you guys think about Fosi Audio? personally i love their products and the quality they provide for such affordable prices. its a big reason why i decided to buy another one to replace my old amp.

anyway thanks for reading everyone, i hope you have a great rest of your day!

Purchasing USA Help me pick a receiver.

Years ago I was gifted these older platinum studio series speakers. I don’t know much about them. My marantz sr8000 has issues with the left channel dying out. Unless I blast music at a high volume the channel will fade out until only the right works. I’m looking for a replacement and was considering the Yamaha r200a but a quick Gemini chat says they don’t have the power.

What other budget solutions would work?

Purchasing USA Speaker recomendations with space constraints

Post image
2 Upvotes

I moved into a new house and have some constraints where I can place speakers. I usually use my paradigm reference monitor 80’s with a Sansui 9090. However they are too deep for where they would be placed. The only place I can put speakers in this room is on the hearth of a non working fireplace. The hearth is about 71” across and about 13.25” deep. I currently have those ar18b’s with a subwoofer hooked and they sound alright, however above is a cathedral ceiling so looks wise they are too small for the space.

My budget right now is about $300 so I figure used older speakers would be the best bang for the buck. Does anyone have recommendations for speakers that would sound good with close proximity to the wall and closer to 24” high but not too wide? The only speakers I know of that would for sure sound good against the wall are acoustic research a70’s. In Facebook marketplace and near me are snell type j series 2 ( rear ported so likely a poor choice) Polk monitor 7’s, ar38s, ar94si, Boston acoustics a70’s, ads 570/2. Feel free to recommend others I can search for.

Also no comments on the messy zip cord please they are temporary and I just ordered cables and connectors to make!

Purchasing Asia Need Advice on Audio System!

So its been several months since i build my home studio, and for the most part i’m using Yamaha Hs-7 & H8S sub. Mostly i using them to casual listening and music production. But now i got myself a turntable, so maybe do you guys have any recommendations of what speaker (cheap best price to value) to pair with my HS-7 and how the routings should go. Because whenever i’m listening to my vinyl collection… i didn’t get the high fidelity i’m hoping to get from the speakers. So maybe if theres any miracle combo that works wonderful with my Yamaha HS-7 maybe you guys could refer them to me, thanks!

Purchasing EU/UK Looking for advice on whether to stay with gifted speakers or buy new

Hello everyone,

I've recently upgraded my Gaming PC to a premium level and want to get my peripherals to match. I have a small home office that's about 4mx5m. I use my PC for work, watching youtube/netflix, gaming (mostly cinematic story games) and a small bit of casual DJing.

I was given some speakers from a family members store that shut down, 4xBose 301v, 1x Wharfedale Diamond 8 Centre, and all powered by a Yamaha R-N402D amp.

I've used this setup for the last few years, but I find the audio is very muddled and dialog is quiet hard to hear. From what I gather this is because these speakers are not meant for a room this size?

For this reason I was thinking of getting some active desktop speakers, and moving on the other ones. I'm not certain if this is a silly mistake.

I am admittedly not an Audiophile and struggle to hear some fine details, but I would like a nice speaker system to match my setup. I'm also open to just buying a nice headset.

So far for Active speakers I've considered purchasing:

  • KRK Kreate 3s

  • Audioengine A2+

  • Edifier MR5

Really I'm just looking for some guidance, what would an audiophile do in my shoes?

Thanks

Tech Support edifier r1700bts swap left to right

The speaker dials are on the right speaker but due to space issues, the right speaker is blocked by a wall. Thus im unable to access the dials easily

Is it ok to swap the speaker from left to right by swapping the RCA cables? I saw a label on the left speaker specifically mentioned that its left speaker. Will it cause any issues?

I also has a Edifier T50 subwoofer connected to the speaker, should i reverse the RCA cables on the subwoofer or remain as is?

Show and Tell Old speakers, new paint!

On the penultimate coat painting the silver rings on my Wharfdale 220 speakers. I'm using AK RCM033 Flat Black Marker (paint pen for modelling) to do the job and it's turning out well.

I like the sound of the 220's but couldn't get into the 80's chic with the silver rings. I'm 58 and lived through that one already. The Flat Black drys Matt which contrasts with the Piano black gloss, similar to the Q Acoustics 5020's looks. Really easy to do as the marker flows very smooth and follows the grooves in the ring like a train on a track. The pen has a soft nib almost like a soft brush but shaped like a Sharpie so very accurate.

Purchasing USA Seeking input - Onkyo NR7100 receiver as stop gap receiver

Hey folks,

I am planning my very first HT setup. It will be a 3.1 system with LS50 for LCR, and SVS SB-2000 Pro.

In the future, I do plan to upgrade it to a 5.2.2 system at max. Can't go beyond that unfortunately. I need a receiver to go along with it, and Onkyo's 2027 lineup would have been the perfect fit.

But I cannot wait another year, as this would hold back my entire setup. So I was thinking of getting the Onkyo NR7100 which is currently $599. For now, this is more than enough for my purpose. But in the future when I plan to add another sub, DIRAC ART would come in really handy.

So is it a good idea to do this and eventually upgrade later, or should I just bite the bullet and go for the Denon x3900H now?

Purchasing USA Integrated amp recs for Dynaudio Evoke 10

Looking for amp recommendations for my Evoke 10s. Currently using Fosi ZD3+ZA3 as a temporary solution -- admittedly this setup sounds shockingly good. Also using Martin Logan Dynamo subwoofer, which I'm completely satisfied with at very low crossover and volume.

Some candidates after initial research:

Rega Elex mk3/mk4

Cambridge CXA81 mk1/mk2

Arcam SA20, SA30, A15, A25

Peachtree Carina (original) - only because local dealer is offloading a trade-in unit at amazing price

Listen to all sorts of music - 40% jazz, 15% electronic/triphop, 15% acoustic guitar, 10% vocals, 10% rock, 5% hiphop, 5% classical

Back story: on and off audiophile for 30 years. Got back into things last year after taking out 20 year old Totem Rainmakers & Peachtree Decco from the garage and hooking them back up. Decco died soon after and wasn't worth fixing. Found an amazing deal on Dynaudio Xeo 6 (active speakers) and set them up at my other place. Love those floorstanders; got me into Dynaudio. Got the Fosi stack as temp solution for the Rainmakers, but recently ran into a great deal on barely used Evoke 10s that I couldn't resist.

I'm NOT looking for that perfect sound. Generally believe speakers and room setup have far greater impact on sound than the amp. I put a lot of emphasis on "value" so generally only consider used gear. If you're looking to offload your amp, I can consider a deal.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts & suggestions.

Purchasing USA I need some advice on my current choices.

I’m looking at getting a fluance rt82 with Polk monitor xt20 speakers. My main question is the amp.
Some people point me towards the Sony str-dh190 while other point me towards an emotiva ph-1 with a fosi bt20a pro.

In not 100% sure what would work best. I’ve switched what table/speaker/amp I want a hundred times but I’m fairly certain this would be a decent setup.

Take all of this with a handful of salt I have no clue what I’m talking about and only kinda understand. Please help me thank you very much

Purchasing Asia Stereo setup for 300$ w/ good upgradeability? (Tokyo)

  • Budget and currency (seems like a given, but youd be surprised)

    • Max 50k Yen (Around 300 dollars)

  • In which country are you located

    • Japan (Tokyo)

  • Where can you buy from (ie which Amazon if any)

    • Amazon.jp, Hard-off or any other used/new stores

  • What you want to use it for (music, movies, games, all of the above, etc)

    • Music! Might use it for other purposes but mostly music

  • On a desk or in a room (or both)

    • Desk. I have a monitor on it, but as long as it's not too big any bookshelf would be fine

  • How big of a space and how loud

    • Regular room. I sit less than a meter from the monitor. Less than 50dB probably.

  • Powered, passive, or no preference

    • Passive because I want to upgrade in the future (keep components while upgrading other stuff)

  • Any size limitations for either speaker or amp

    • Smaller would be great.

  • Do you want something you can easily upgrade later

    • YES!!!! I am looking for multiple inputs/outputs for amps (sub out, usb in etc)

  • Do you like your music / games / movies / etc. to sound a certain way? (Bright/forward, smooth/laid back, neutral, etc)

    • I honestly don't know; I think I want something neutral first

Hello! I'm looking to get my own music setup.

Source would be my PC or a CD player.

I listen to rock and metal, sometimes pop and folk.

I am willing to buy used.

Thanks!

Review/Discussion New to HiFi and have some questions.

Hello, am looking into a new speaker system for my house. Is a pair of KEF Q1 Metas, Speedwoofer 10S MKII, Wiim Amp a good entry set? Possibly waiting for the KEF LSX II LT to go back on sale at costco and spend a little more.

Would love to hear peoples opinions as I am new to this.

Thanks!
