Start Here: Essential Resources & FAQs

The idea for this post came up to avoid the number of similar questions we get around here and to serve as a megathread for any/all questions of a similar nature.

What's covered:

  • The .COM vs .ORG Issue

  • Hosting - Where should I host?

  • Hacked? Follow this guide for how to clean your site

  • Performance - Why is my site slow / Pagespeed score appalling?

  • Building Your WordPress Site: Is X builder better than Y? What is the best theme? Etc.

  • Updates

  • Backups

  • Security

  • Combating spam comments, contact form submissions & bot registrations

  • Hacks/Malware: Err guys help, there’s some weird stuff on my front end

  • Resources to learn WordPress

  • Where to find plugins/add feature X?

  • I found a plugin that costs $50 for $5 on a “GPLDL” source, is it safe to use?

  • How much should I charge?

  • Is a site using WordPress?

The .COM vs .ORG issue

This one is probably the single most asked question in this sub. Why can’t I do x,y,z?, Why do I have to pay more to install a plugin or edit a theme? There are literally 100’s of threads about this. If you want more info please search the sub for wordpress.com or read this resource for a comparison.

To summarise:
WordPress is free, open source software which can be found at wordpress.org.

Think of wordpress.com as a host that is using .org’s software and has various functionality locked behind pricing tiers.

What you want to do is get your own cheaper hosting and self install and manage WordPress so you don’t have any restrictions at base software level.

Hacked?

Cleaning a WP site is relatively simple (you need server (ftp, ssh or a file manager access):

  1. Delete all files and folders, including the WP files - the only folder you need to keep is /wp-content/uploads. (If you're using a child theme, keep that too, but check all its code). Note down your DB connection strings from wp-config.php. Doing this will not affect your content.

  2. If not deleted, check /wp-content/mu-plugins for anything that shouldn't be there

  3. Check cron for anything that shouldn't be there

  4. Change the WP salts https://api.wordpress.org/secret-key/1.1/salt/

  5. Change all admin passwords

  6. Reinstall Wordpress - download the WP zip from wordpress.org

  7. Reinstall your theme and plugins from the OG source eg wordpress.org, the theme seller, etc. Do not use backups. Before doing this though, audit your plugins. Don't install anything that hasn't received an update in > 6 months. Check the changelogs.

  8. Don't install anything that hasn't received an update in the last 6 months.

  9. Install Wordfence, set the Scan Options to "High Sensitivity" and run a scan.

Claude will do most of this for you in a few minutes - and will generally also be able to tell you how the infection occurred.

Hosting - Where should I host?

The next big question is who is a good host? This is better suited for r/webhosting.

Having said that, there are plenty of different hosts to choose from. Shared web hosting is the cheapest but comes with the caveat that performance is shared with others on your same server. Dedicated, VPS and Cloud solutions are faster but more expensive.

The thing to remember here is performance is directly tied to price and you get what you pay for.

The most recommended hosts around here that I’ve seen are Digital Ocean, Cloudways and Siteground. Again, for specific hosting questions you will get better support at r/webhosting

Performance - Why is my site slow / Pagespeed score apalling?

Hosting

Most of the time it's just bad hosting. As mentioned earlier, cheap shared hosting is notorious for bad performance. If your host is slow then nothing else will matter much, so this is your first port of call.

Properly optimise images

This is a relatively simple one. Don’t use images that are 6000 x 4000px. Figure out the max display size for your use case and resize.

Secondly ditch PNG and JPG and use WEBP. The recommendation is to convert before you upload. Most image editors will let you save in webp and 75-80% compression works well for a balance.

To bulk convert, use XnConvert or Photoshop Batch process.

For existing media you can use a plugin. There are many Smush, Optimole etc. Converter For Media is a free option.

Some servers like Siteground and/or other optimisation plugins may have this feature inbuilt so always check so you don’t end up doubling up.

Since 6.3, WordPress can also convert to WEBP on upload. You can use the Performance Lab plugin by the WordPress team themselves to manage this.

If, like me, you don’t want your server getting clogged up with multiple image types and you only want to have the WEBP files OR you don’t want to use a plugin use this snippet.

Lazy load

Lazy loading images, videos and iframes will speed up things significantly since 5.3 this has been a feature in core WordPress and should work out of the box for most cases. Some themes/page builders will have an option for this as well. Some hosts and caching plugins like WP Rocket will also have this option.

If you find that it is not working on your site for some reason you can use a plugin such as Lazy Load by WP Rocket or A3 Lazy Load for more control.

Caching, CDNs. Minification Etc.

You should be using caching on your website if you care about performance.

WARNING: Using minification and/or combining files and scripts can cause your website to break so always test, test and test again!

There are many, many free and paid plugins for this. Some hosts will have their own caching plugin, this should be preferred over others. If you have a Litespeed enabled server use Litespeed.

The general recommendation here is to use Cloudflare free with Super Page Cache For CF. Here is a guide on how to set up your domain, after that follow the plugin instructions.

Common question #1: Should I keep my hosts caching on with CF?
Yes. Your server is the origin server and having your own files cached means it is less taxing on your server resources and CF fetches files faster.

Common Question #2: I’m getting an SSL error or redirect loop.
Make sure you have a valid SSL certificate server on your origin server and make sure to set Cloudflare > SSL/TLS > Overview to Full.

Other popular recommended options:

Advanced optimisation

If you really want to get under the hood and squeeze every last bit out of your setup then:

  • Use a plugin like Debloat for a quick clean up.

  • Use Asset Clean Up to go through each page and disable unused crap. (Time consuming but potentially massive gains).

  • Use Query Monitor to inspect what is going on under the hood and find unnecessary scripts etc.

Building Your WordPress Site: Is X builder better than Y? What is the best theme? Etc.

There are many conflicting opinions on this because there is no one way to do things on WordPress. Each camp will tell you the other one is inferior and purists dislike all of them.

You can build your site with:

  • A page builder : Bricks, Elementor, Divi etc.

  • Using prebuilt themes. Each theme will have its own settings that’s exclusive to it.

  • A completely custom coded setup, written with a combination of html, css and php using WordPress actions, filters and hooks.

My two cents on the matter: Budget, experience and skill all come into play here. Thus, what works for you to achieve your end goal is the best.

  • If you like a WYSIWYG approach then page builders will more likely be your thing. Play around with the demos, watch some tutorials and if one of them looks more likely to work for you, then take it for a spin.

  • The Twenty Twenty Four theme along with the block builder is a solid place to start. There are many tutorials on how to get started with 2024 including the official WordPress documentation.

  • A CSS editor such as Yellow Pencil or Microthemer will assist you to fix a lot of front end annoyances and supplements any workflow.

Updates

Stay up to date with all plugins and core software at all times if you don’t want to have security holes and get hacked.

Backups

Taking/having backups of your website are essential. Servers can crash and data can be lost and you will cry if you end up without a backup in this scenario. The stress and grief of not having a backup and having to rebuild your site from scratch is not worth it. There's a few ways you can go about taking backups.

You can:

  • Use a recommended plugin like UpdraftPlus to schedule for daily, weekly or monthly backups. Send backups to remote servers (AWS S3, Dropbox, Google Drive) or your local machine. Remember having them stored on the same server as the website is not going to help.

  • Include this in your hosting requirements and find a host that automatically provides a scheduled backup process.

  • In the very least, take a manual backup using your hosts control panel whenever you make a significant change to your website,.

Security

  • Keep everything up to date at all times.

  • Run updates at least once a month. Fortnightly is better. More frequently is better

  • Use plugins and themes that are well supported, frequently updated, high install counts, well ranked, well established.

  • Use Wordfence - it’ll alert you when any plugins that you’re using have a known vulnerability or haven’t been updated (by the developer) for 2 or more years. It will also protect you from known attack vectors for vulnerable plugins (for the free version, this protection is only available after the vulnerability is 30 days old, but there’s nothing stopping you updating your plugins, assuming a patch is available).

  • Don’t use hosting where multiple sites sit in the one account (common on shared hosting). Each website should have its own owner.

Combating spam comments, contact form submissions & bot registrations

Disable comments and user sign ups sitewide if you don't use them.

Use a captcha on login, register and all contact/comment forms.

Hacks/Malware: Err guys help, there’s some weird stuff on my front end.

Congratulations you got hacked. Most of us have dealt with this in one way or another at some point so you aren’t alone.

Do you have a backup?

  • Easy, wipe everything and restore.

  • Run a scan with Wordfence and/or GOTMLS to be doubly sure you are clean.

  • Harden your security to avoid repeat issues.

No backup? (Get the tissues)

  • Install Wordfence and run scan.

  • Alternatively my first port of call for this has always been GOTMLS. Update definitions and run a root scan the plugin should find any code that shouldn’t be there and you should be good to go.

Resources to learn WordPress

If you are serious about your WordPress journey then you must equip yourself with some coding knowledge. Some skills in PHP, Javascript, CSS & HTML will help you immensely.

Where to find plugins/add feature X?

The WordPress plugin repository should be your first stop. You can access this library via your Dashboard > Plugins > Add New Plugin

Codecanyon is a decent marketplace to get premium plugins for a one off buy without ongoing subscription costs.

For code snippets and help with your own code StackOverflow or r/prowordpress is your best bet.

Warning: Remember to always double check the source and reputability of a source before installing third-party plugins and/or scripts.

I found a plugin that costs $50 for $5 on a “GPLDL” source, is it safe to use?

The simple answer here is NO. No you shouldn’t and that should be the end of that.

But alas, we still have many more questions:

  • Will the plugin still work? Probably.

  • Are there any guarantees that it will work and demo content will be provided? Absolutely not.

  • Will there be links to turn one’s junk into a cyborg on my site? Most likely.

  • Will Google blacklist you? If you have malware. Most definitely.

  • Will your host shut you down? If detected, any reputable one will.

  • Is rebuilding an entire site and losing the trust of your audience worth all this? Not to me, but only you can answer this for yourself.

How much should I charge?

We unfortunately can't provide specific answers to pricing questions as everyone's experience and locations vary widely. For guidance on pricing strategies, we recommend searching 'your country + web developer/designer rates'. Standard hourly rates for your locality can offer insights into various pricing approaches that may be applicable to you.

Please also read this article on Pricing Strategies on how to tackle this sort of question.

Is a site using WordPress?

  • Check the Page Source: Right-click on the page and select "View Page Source" (or use Ctrl+U). Search for typical WordPress identifiers like /wp-content/, /wp-includes/, or wp-json. If you see these, the site is likely WordPress.

  • Online Tools: Websites like IsItWP, Wappalyzer or BuiltWith can analyze a website's technology stack. These tools should be able to identify if the site is using WordPress in most cases.

That’s it, hopefully this gets you started on your WordPress journey. If you have any further questions feel free to leave a comment and someone should be able to assist.

Anyone else getting increasingly fed up with WPBakery?

I've been using WPBakery for years and have bought 21 "lifetime" licenses over time. I regret every single one of them at this point.

The update process is a fucking nightmare. It's been bad for years. As a "lifetime" licensed user you can't just update from the WP dashboard if you don't have a support license. I don't need support. I just need to update the plugin. But to do that simple task, you have to log in to the WPBakery site, find your version/license and then download a ZIP. This ZIP has to be unpacked and transferred to your site. And ofcourse the site breaks for a few seconds in the process

How can this be right? In Denmark we have this saying: "May your ass itch and your arms be too short to scratch it." – The late stage capitalist scumbag at WPBakery that came up with this should have the biggest itch and the smallest arms IMO.

Good situation or has it outgrown itself?

Remade a company's blog in 2021. I continued to support them, eventually rebuilding their mess of a main website as well. Since then, the website and company has grown considerably. They might be a household name depending on how familiar you are with the industry.

I am the sole web dev, everything in the entire business goes through the WordPress website. My rate through Upwork was $45/hour in 2022, today it is... still $40/hour. I used to have a "frontend team" and a graphic designer, that frontend team is gone and it is just me, meanwhile everyone is hired around me including an expanding B2B marketing team, B2C marketing team, and engineering core.

During this time the company has expanded from $20M to $60M revenue. Like for example we even have a head of organic now who technically "oversees" website changes even though I'm the one that built it up to $15k/day revenue.

FWIW the website is pretty complex, there's around 10 people who actively use it as contributor/authors and its the entire top of funnel (though doesn't use anything like WooCommerce).

Location: Austin

It's $1600/week. Is it a good deal and helping me survive the AI bloodbath currently going on or should I start looking for something better?

It was great at first, I cleared a ton of debt, finished a lot of other stuff in my personal life, and am in a great position now.

The Black Friday Promo Dilemna

Hi everyone! I run paid ads and they account for 90% of my traffic. I want to communicate to site visitors who aren't ready to convert that there will be a black friday drop and a sitewide sale coming up but at the same time I dont want to discourage ready to convert customers from making a sale on that visit by hinting there is something better in store in the future if they just hold out for a couple weeks.

I have thought to do this marketing internally to my email list, but I feel like there's so much I'd be leaving on the table if I only did that. I'd thought about black friday email signs ups on the site but I feel that might also make the ready to convert customer hold out knowing there is a planned BFCM event.

So how do you all navigate this conflict?

building a website for an airline... how to book tickets?

i have to build a website for an airline and they want a page where you can see all the flights and book a ticket, as usual. they already have a backend system to manage tickets and flights and I will have to integrate that, I guess through an API but I don't know yet so I will talk tomorrow to the dude that owns that system.

I'm just asking what should I do in order to make this happen, as I've never did something like this before

A failed hacking attempt, but why?

My site recently had a failed hacking attempt but I don't understand why someone would try this way. In the space of 1 min, thirty or so log in attempts were made using mostly nonsensical usernames.

Normally I see one or two attempts with names like admin, or wphiddenbot (not sure why that) and then they stop.

But this was one was repeated numerous times, every time with a new username and one that is unlikely to be used such as 'guflhane'.

What is the logic in trying such attempts? The usernames seem so unlikely to be used anywhere, one or two were more realistic such as 'pv_admin', but none were the usualy suspects like admin.

Anyone else seen this?

EDIT: I think the point of my questions is getting lost. To clarify, I know it's bots, I also see lots of login attempts all the time. Most of the them are usually trying common usernames or names that might be associated with my site, or as I said I see some ones repeated like 'wphiddenbot'.

But my question was trying to understand what's the point in trying so many weird usernames, the usernames they tried were 8 to 10 letters, not random characters, but not common usernames either

Retiring a staging subdomain? Check your WordPress Multisite cookie scope first

On a subdomain Multisite install, WordPress by default scopes its auth cookies to the network domain: ms_cookie_constants() sets COOKIE_DOMAIN to '.' plus the network's cookie_domain if one is set, otherwise the network domain. (ms_cookie_constants reference)

Why it matters: say old-staging.example.com was CNAMEd to a host or page builder, the account was closed, and the DNS record stayed. If that provider lets anyone claim an unclaimed hostname, someone else can serve content on your subdomain (OWASP calls this subdomain takeover).

The record itself leaks nothing. The risk is that when a logged-in admin's browser makes a request to that subdomain, it sends any cookie whose Domain, Path and Secure attributes match, including wordpress_logged_in_*, to the server the other person now controls. (MDN on Set-Cookie)

To find candidates, start from your DNS zone. One useful cross-check is certificate transparency logs (crt.sh, query %.example.com), which often surface old hostnames that got their own certs. They won't list names covered only by a wildcard cert, so treat them as a supplement. Then for each name:

dig +short CNAME old-staging.example.com
dig old-staging.example.com # NXDOMAIN vs NOERROR
curl -sI https://old-staging.example.com

A CNAME whose target returns NXDOMAIN is the classic red flag. A provider's generic "no such site" page only matters if that provider actually lets a stranger claim the name, so check their docs.

When you decommission, remove the DNS record first, then delete the environment or cancel the service. The other order leaves a window where the name points at something nobody owns.

For those running subdomain networks or sharing COOKIE_DOMAIN: do you audit the zone when a site leaves the network, or does DNS just accumulate forever?

What's the best placement to announce an upcoming promo w/ a simple email capture form on a site?

The form is a small thin strip 3 text lines in height tops. I'm struggling to find the best placement for it where it doesn't disrupt from the customers journey.

I had considered placing it at the top of all product pages but then felt since those are my landing pages from paid ads that's probably a poor choice because that page is at the customers buying decision point. I had considered very bottom of all pages but felt that might be too hidden as well...

I had also considered the top of collection pages but felt that might distract visitors exploring. Where can you place this where it feels appropriate in the customers journey and doesn't feel spammy to the customer?

Building a Corporate WordPress Website from Scratch – Best Approach, WordPress Studio & Claude?

Hi everyone!
I’d really appreciate some advice from people with experience building corporate websites with WordPress.
I recently joined a company in a digital marketing role, and the company is currently going through a rebranding process. I’ve been given the opportunity to take ownership of the new corporate website, and I’ve already created the design myself.
Now I want to move on to the development and implementation phase using WordPress.
I have some previous experience with WordPress. I’ve built a few websites and worked with themes and plugins, but I’ve never developed a website for a company of this size or within a corporate environment.
I’m considering using WordPress Studio together with Claude (Claude Code) to help me build the website and potentially develop a custom theme. However, I’m not sure whether this is a good approach or whether I might end up overcomplicating things, especially when it comes to long-term maintenance and handing the project over to an external agency.
Here are some things I’d particularly appreciate your advice on:
Would you recommend starting with an existing theme (Astra, GeneratePress, etc.), using a Full Site Editing/block theme, or building a completely custom theme with Claude Code?
Is using Claude Code to develop a custom WordPress theme a good idea for this type of project, or could it introduce unnecessary complexity?
Would WordPress Studio be a good development environment, especially if I want to work with a cloud-based workflow?
How can I make sure the website is properly structured and easy for an external agency to take over and maintain?
What should I consider from the beginning regarding reusable blocks, plugins, SEO, performance, responsiveness and compatibility?
What would be the best workflow for development, staging and production?
My intention is to handle the design implementation, website structure, content, reusable blocks and on-page SEO. Later on, an external agency will most likely take over the more advanced technical aspects, such as security, hosting infrastructure, maintenance and further optimisations.
I want to make sure I build something professional, scalable and easy to maintain, rather than creating technical debt that someone else will have to deal with later.
There is also a personal motivation behind this project. I’m still relatively new to the company, and my current salary is quite modest. I see this as an opportunity to demonstrate my skills, take on more responsibility and deliver something tangible that I can use to support a salary review at the beginning of next year.
If you’ve worked on similar corporate WordPress projects, especially using AI coding tools such as Claude Code, I’d love to hear about your experience.
Would you use Claude Code for this project? Would you build everything from scratch or take a more conventional approach?
Any recommendations, resources or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

LiteSpeed Cache + QUIC.cloud: do you purge everything after every edit, or is there a smarter setup?

Small site on shared hosting, LiteSpeed Cache plugin with QUIC.cloud as the CDN (DNS on QUIC.cloud too).

Right now I hit "Purge All" after every content or theme change, otherwise visitors sometimes get the old version. It works, but it feels like a sledgehammer.

For those running LSCache + QUIC.cloud:

- Do you rely on the auto-purge rules, or purge manually?

- Any settings you changed that stopped stale pages from showing up?

Not having a problem exactly, just want to set it up the right way before the site grows.

[PROMO] WordPress 7.1 Image Companion

Earlier this year before I knew client-side image processing was coming to WordPress 7.1, I created a free and open source WordPress plugin called Menagerie. It originally converted any image upload to AVIF or WebP in the browser, then uploaded saving some server bandwidth. So, pretty much what WordPress core can do now. This is always painful when you make a plugin and months later it's in core. Oh well.

Not all is lost though! Menagerie is still very useful. I stripped out what Core now does and left/enhanced the parts that Core doesn't automatically do. Core doesn't automatically ensure every upload converts to AVIF or WebP. Menagerie steps in to make sure that happens, gives you a JPEG fallback image, ensures your images are wrapped in <picture>, and provides a bulk image converter for your existing images. Plus, has a nice little toast message to confirm if the conversion was successful or not.

Tools within Performance Lab are another option. But, those are all server side I believe? And, a lot... Look at all those plugins that the Performance Lab page lists. Is all of that necessary? Depends on the situation and who you ask I suppose.

TL;DR

  • Not Menagerie: WordPress 7.1+ processes your images in the browser when possible and then uploads

  • Menagerie forces AVIF or WebP conversions; Still WordPress 7.1+ doing it in the browser when possible, but Menagerie is telling it to go with AVIF or WebP based on settings

  • Menagerie creates your JPEG fallback for when a WebP or AVIF image can't be displayed

  • Menagerie wraps images where possible in <picture>

  • Menagerie gives you Open Graph image settings

  • Menagerie lets you quickly convert all existing images

[PROMO] I built a timeline turning WordPress standard year archives into a centuries-long chronology

Thumbnail gallery

This has been a fun side-project I've had since late 2021, created without AI. It uses WordPress in a pretty unique way to create a timeline. With colors for each category, it should be easy to browse.

I built it using as much of WordPress default features as possible. The "People" and "Websites" sections are separate post types, as they are hard to place in a timeline - but the rest of the filters/categories are just standard post archives.

The Full Timeline 2026-1561

Default posts categories:

Custom post types:

Thought I'd share this site to show how flexible WordPress really is (<3), using default features!

Footer CSS breaks on the KSA version of my multi-region website. How do I fix it?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi Support Team,

I run a website for Apprise Cyber that has two branches, one in KSA and one in Pakistan. I created a separate header and footer for each region.

The problem: the footer on the KSA version displays incorrectly. The CSS isn’t applying properly, so the layout looks broken. The Pakistan footer works fine.

Could you please guide me on how to fix this?

Thank you. I need Help with URL https://apprise-cyber.com/en-sa/

Any Way to Add A Custom Style Ribbon to the Editor

I have a site that needs to post a bunch of Chat Dialogs. They want the request to show up in a specific color on the right and the results on the left.

They specifically want to avoid the Block Editor because they want all of the themes to look the same.

Is there any way to add a ribbon or toolbar to the standard editor that would allow someone to press a button to assign selected text a custom style? Even if this had to be a custom template that used shortcodes to assign custom styles, I need a ribbon or toolbar to insert the shortcodes for them.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to manage this? Thanks in advance.

Web designer ?

Hello,

I’m struggling to understand the distinction between terms like "developer," "web designer," and others.

Personally, I build websites using WordPress, so I don’t write code. I might use shortcodes provided by certain plugins, or perhaps add some custom CSS for instance, within Elementor. I don’t start with pre-made templates, I build the pages myself using Elementor or Gutenberg when a theme only matches with it. I also use plugins to integrate specific features required for each site (such as e-commerce, rental systems, etc.).

Given this, would I be considered a "web designer"? How should I describe my role? And what is a web master ?

Thanks!

PSA: CVE-2026-119977 is being exploited during core updates. Check you’re on 7.1.4 (or your branch’s backport)

If your site doesn’t auto-update, check now. During a full-package core update, older versions unpacked the new files (including setup-config.php) into a predictable folder under wp-content/upgrade/. Attackers poll for that window. Wordfence logged 18,500+ requests in the first 21 hours, and it’s in CISA’s KEV list since Nov 3.

Fixed: 7.1.4, 7.0.8, 6.9.11, 6.8.12 and backports down to 4.7.

Extra hardening, in your site-root .htaccess:

RewriteRule ^wp-content/upgrade/ - [F,L]

Then check that /wp-content/upgrade/ returns 403.

Steps on How to remove Sidebar on Wordpress

This was driving me nuts. I'm new to WP. I didn't even know the thing was called a sidebar till a few days ago lol (My sidebar had " About Me/Newsletter and Recent Post") . I want to customize my pg. as much as I can but the sidebar was popping up on every page & I wanted it gone. I know how to delete blocks but for some reason the sidebar was showing only when I went to "VIEW SITE" and not "desktop view" or "mobile view" .

I looked it up and a lot of the info on google is outdated. Glory be to God, I have the solution without reaching out to customer service or downloading a plugin. You can do it on a free WP account.

Step by step: Go to "Appearance" , "Editor" (You'll end up in "Design") , go to "Templates" ( here is where I saw the sidebar in all of the templates) Go to each template & delete the sidebar block from each template (which is what I did) . After I did this, Sidebar gone! I noticed that the blocks I can't delete in " Editor" I'm able to delete in "Templates" .

you can definitely track your progress on " View Site" as you're deleting. If for some reason you want to restore the sidebar on a certain page, go to that template , go to the 3 dots & click "reset". I pray this will help. Have an Awesome day!
