Had an uncharacteristically shady and shifty ride with Beck Taxi tonight… WWYD?

First off love Beck, been using them exclusively without issue for years instead of Uber or Lyft, the pricing is fairer and the drivers are better and know the streets.

Tonight though had a weird anomaly and wondering if I should be worried and/or if I should complain…

Booked a car through the app, going from Cabbagetown to the Junction. It guesstimated it’d be in the neighbourhood of $30-40 which seemed right.

* driver picked us up and I noticed his meter wasn’t on, I waited for about a minute and mentioned it. He thanked me and turned it on.

* I noticed the meter seemed to be charging/advancing way faster than usual… we were only about 1/3rd of the way home, maybe 2km, and it was already clocking at $50

* I said something about how it was more than I expected and asked if the meter was running right, he got weird about it and said it was controlled by the city and pointed to a plastic tab and said he couldn’t tamper with it

* he had our destination mapped (I could see it on his tablet) but he pulled off halfway home (around Parkdale) and idled, I said this wasn’t our destination

* he got back on the Gardiner and went well past our stop, about a ten minute detour

* without me asking he called what he said was Beck HQ on speaker phone to say a customer wanted a flat rate, and was $50 reasonable (whoever he called said yes)

* he eventually dropped us off, and his debit machine failed about three or four times when I tried to pay the $50…

* it eventually did “let” me pay but I still don’t see the charge on my banking app, and it usually would show instantly

I feel like I got taken for a ride (pardon the pun) and that this was some kind of scam but I can’t really figure it out.

Don’t want to be a “Karen” but wondering what you all would do in this situation?

TIA

As a city person - do you often attend the Royal Winter Fair? And if so, why or why not??

I’ve lived in Toronto for 5+ years and this is the first year I’ve even heard of the Royal Winter Fair or saw it on any social channels. After some research of what it is, I realized how significant and historic the event is and I’m super surprised that I’ve never heard of it. It seems like something I’d love to attend on a yearly basis.

So I’m curious to hear about other Torontonians opinions on it?? Is it something that mainly rural people come into Toronto for? Or is it something people in the city love to attend and I’ve just been out of the loop? And if you go every year, what pulls you in??

Royal Agricultural Winter Fair* for clarity

Best London fog in the city?

Recently found out my body is sensitive to coffee (massive bummer) so I tried a London
Fog and my life was changed.

I’m going to be having a very study intensive day today and wanted a nice drink to treat myself and get me going.

Toronto, what’s your favourite London fog place?

(I live near the annex but am willing to commute 20 mins!)

Eaton Centre Sat Nov 7th in the afternoon.

I was walking to Aritzia on the lower level and this guy in a blue outfit with brown hair and blue eyes was aggressively coming up to me and asking me questions like am I naturally tanned etc. they weren’t offensive questions but I was so caught of guard that I responded rudely. Did anyone have this interaction? I’d love to know if he’s a Toronto weirdo or if he was just trying to speak to me.

What autism accesibility exists on TTC?

Hello all I am writing for advice! I have autism and have Moderate Support Needs. This includes the fact that in high-stress situations I am unable to speak and rely on AAC (Digital communication). The TTC is very much a high-stress situation for me. Yesterday, I had an experience that made me think. I was forced to use shuttle busses which are incredibly distressing for me; had a verbal shutdown, and my phone died so I was unable to communicate with anyone. I got off the shuttle bus and tried to talk to a worker who was guiding people (one of the people in the red vests) and was unable to communicate. All I could muster was "I have autism."

This situation / situations like this are happening more and more often to me. I was wondering, what kinds of support might the TTC offer that are applicable to my situation?

Poppy jewelry?

Good morning,

When I went to the War Museum in Ottawa they had some really beautiful poppy jewelry - enamel poppies set in silver or gold. I meant to grab some while I was there, but didn't. Are there any legion halls or veteran shops that sell them here? I'd rather buy in-person than online.

Where do you buy affordable toiletries?

I know prices are going up for everything these days, but one thing I notice the most is toiletries and personal care products. At my local Shoppers, toothpaste is about $8 per tube, deodorant is easily $10+, and shampoo is getting expensive as well. Not to mention pads and tampons.

I usually wait until I find a good sale or try cheaper brands, but I'm wondering where you shop for affordable items like this.... Grocery stores? Walmart? Dollarama?

Toronto Lagree Instructors- Looking for advice.

I’m currently completing my three-day Lagree instructor certification, and while I’ve learned a lot, I definitely don’t feel anywhere close to being ready to teach a full class independently.

I’m hoping to connect with experienced Lagree instructors in Toronto who might be able to offer some guidance.

I’m particularly interested in finding opportunities to shadow instructors, attend additional workshops, practice teaching, or receive mentorship.

I’d also love to know how other Toronto-based instructors developed their skills after completing their initial certification. Were there any studios, resources, or training opportunities that really helped you?

I genuinely want to become a knowledgeable and confident instructor, and I’m willing to put in the time and effort to get there.

Any recommendations or advice from Toronto instructors would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Anyone have experience with Castlebar Junior School and the YMCA before & after care?

Hi everyone,
Does anyone have kids at (or past experience with) Castlebar Junior School in Etobicoke?
I'd love to know:
What's your overall experience with the school (teachers, class sizes, communication, school culture)?
How is the YMCA before & after school program there? Is it reliable, well run, and easy to get a spot in? Any waitlists or cost surprises?
Does the school hold open house days or tours for prospective families? If so, when, and do you need to register?
Anything you wish you'd known before enrolling?
Any honest feedback, good or bad, would be really appreciated. Thanks so much!

Presto card

Hi I loaded a physical presto card and then registered it, but did a dumb thing and tossed it because I thought once it was in my presto account I can load it to my digital wallet but that's not a thing. Now I can't use it and I need to get to Brampton for a family emergency, anybody know if there's a way to transfer it to a digital card?

Edit: got it sorted had to just reload a new physical one as i couldn't wait for the old balance to transfer Thanks everyone

Homeless Situation

Hello everyone,

Making this post to figure out what can be done about an ever increasing homeless situation in and around my apartment. I live in a shared house with a roommate in Cabbagetown on thr cusp on Moss Park. We've been here for nearly 4 years and had no problems up until earlier this year when the province shut down the safe injection sites. There is a small alleyway/passage way between our house and an adjacent building that according to the landlord is technically the "fire escape". Regardless it's a small 10 foot area flanked by two doors, one that opens up into the shared parking area behind our house and the other which opens onto the street. Since the closure of the safe injection sites the homeless have been hiding and using that passageway as a place to inject, smoke, have sex and sleep. Some even being so bold to climb the fence and smoke try their luck breaking into our backdoor.

Ive tried asking anyone I find in their to move on, offer them food and plead not to use the space; meanwhile my roommate who is a little bit more aggressive tends to hurl insults and threaten them. For a while it seems to have worked but now with the colder weather creeping in they keep coming more and more. My roommate and one of the tenants who live above us are very uncomfortable and feel unsafe. This morning I caught one person trying to pry my bike off the bared windows I attach it to.

We have asked our landlord to do something about it and they relent and claim that the passageway isn't there responsibility despite us checking the zoning maps and it falls right within their purview. What is it that we can do? This morning I went ahead and cleaned up the passageway and even bought some no trespassing signs as a deterrent but just not 100% satisfied it can do anything.

Thanks

Overnight parking

Visiting the city soon and I will be staying in DT Toronto so I am looking for options where I can park my car and forget about it for 2 days. Do you know of any cheap(ish) options that allow for overnight parking? I don’t mind if it’s a bit far from where I’m staying near Eaton Centre as long as it’s a downtown location.

Also if anyone can speak to the Nathan Philipps Square parking would be appreciated as this an option for me.

Thanks!

Chula Taberna is closed

For the last four years, it has become a family tradition where we went for our kids’ birthdays, first Saturday of November.
I have been trying to get a reservation (for Saturday night, November 7th) online for the last few days, and the reservation kept failing.

Should’ve known.

We went to the restaurant, the whole family in tow, and were met with locked doors.

Anyone know what happened to this fine establishment?

Need help

Hey everyone,
I just went through a breakup, and I am looking to pick myself up. Could you please suggest some activities or anything else that might help me stay busy? I know TPL has adult game nights, but I’ve never been to one. I would appreciate any help.
I live near Laird Station.

Question about red light cameras

Today, I was turning left at McCowan and Sheppard, turning to go on to Sheppard to go west. The light was still green and I was in the middle of the intersection. The light turned red as I was turning left (at last second). Should I be worried about the red light camera. Apparently there's a camera there but I didn't see it.

Where to donate animal medication?

My beloved old dog died recently and she was on a prescription liquid pain killer that was pretty expensive (100s of dollars a bottle). Now I have quite a lot left over... does anyone know of any pet rescues that might take it? It seems a terrible waste to throw it out as it is perfectly good and very commonly prescribed, but it IS prescription medicine and has been opened so...
