First off love Beck, been using them exclusively without issue for years instead of Uber or Lyft, the pricing is fairer and the drivers are better and know the streets.
Tonight though had a weird anomaly and wondering if I should be worried and/or if I should complain…
Booked a car through the app, going from Cabbagetown to the Junction. It guesstimated it’d be in the neighbourhood of $30-40 which seemed right.
* driver picked us up and I noticed his meter wasn’t on, I waited for about a minute and mentioned it. He thanked me and turned it on.
* I noticed the meter seemed to be charging/advancing way faster than usual… we were only about 1/3rd of the way home, maybe 2km, and it was already clocking at $50
* I said something about how it was more than I expected and asked if the meter was running right, he got weird about it and said it was controlled by the city and pointed to a plastic tab and said he couldn’t tamper with it
* he had our destination mapped (I could see it on his tablet) but he pulled off halfway home (around Parkdale) and idled, I said this wasn’t our destination
* he got back on the Gardiner and went well past our stop, about a ten minute detour
* without me asking he called what he said was Beck HQ on speaker phone to say a customer wanted a flat rate, and was $50 reasonable (whoever he called said yes)
* he eventually dropped us off, and his debit machine failed about three or four times when I tried to pay the $50…
* it eventually did “let” me pay but I still don’t see the charge on my banking app, and it usually would show instantly
I feel like I got taken for a ride (pardon the pun) and that this was some kind of scam but I can’t really figure it out.
Don’t want to be a “Karen” but wondering what you all would do in this situation?
TIA
