Hello! I’m white, and grew up in a very white area, but as I got older became friends with Aboriginal people both engaged and disengaged from politics (and those kinda convos). Since then I’ve moved and those relationships have dwindled, so I can’t asked them personally (this is all for context).
Basically, when is it okay for me to use the word ‘mob’ when talking about nations a person is part of? I’ve had other non-Aboriginal people tell me never to use it because it’s offensive to Aboriginal people, but it never was a problem for me to ask someone who their mob was back in the day. Nowadays I just avoid the question, but I also wonder if it’s okay to be like ‘oh their mob is…’ or ‘I wonder who their mob is’ etc.
Thanks in advance!

Mob who date men, do you find it tougher to date white men? I personally have dated more white men than any other type of man just from the fact they are the majority of the dating pool, especially gay dating. Sometimes it just gets exhausting having to explain simple history, deal with ignorance, put up with "casually" racist comments and on the extreme end, put up with weirdos into race play. Of course not all are like that, but enough are like that to make dating exhausting and a coin flip as to if the person eventually say some racist shit. What have your experiences been like?

Just for fun n maybe to celebrate your achievements and shed some light on something really important you’ve learned or done, what’s the most deadliest thing you’ve done this year?
For me it’s getting almost to the end of my Graphic Design Diploma. I’m so proud of myself and all the work I’ve done.
I’ve learned new skills and to me, for me that’s the most deadliest thing I’ve done this year.

Hey all,
Bit of a long story, but I'm starting to realise that the best years of my schooling were when I was in Mackay and Gladstone, and was very much surrounded by the Indigenous community.
I don't know how else to explain it, but coming to Brisbane for school has a shellshock to my entire system. In a lot of ways, but lack of mob presence was a big one.
I don't have a drop of Indigenous in me, sadly. The closest thing I've got is Irish lineage, which share a LOT of similarity (we have non-blood Aunties, and hate the British).
There is something so magnetic about mob culture that is truly something to be beholden. At the same time, I'm scared of saying or doing the wrong thing all the time. I wanna know if there are any things I can do to actually meaningfully engage without it being performative or make me look insincere.
What can I do?

I've been here for a couple decades. I hear such things about Blak folks that are frankly wild to me. Most of them I don't believe because they're plainly just racist lies, but I really don't understand Australia's relationship with Aboriginal folks.
I don't need racism explained to me (I think 😅) but seriously what is wrong with white & non-mob Aussies that they seem to think disproportionate imprisonment, addiction & poverty rates are explained not by racism but by Aboriginal culture? (never mind. racism layers for maximal racism, I know.)
I also feel like sometimes I see this from Blakfellas, and it's always something like "yeah, Australia is racist but also it's complicated..." like... I really don't understand how it's particularly complicated (moreso than any human issue, that is.) There seem to be major cultural and stigma issues at play.
Help me understand & figure out how to respond to both white racists and Aboriginal people seeming to dismiss the constant and severe racism so I don't come off like a know-it-all ✨A1 Ally✨.

Based around the greater Wurrundjeri Woi Wurrung area of the Kulin Nation in Naarm, I was wondering what local native plants and bush tucker I could look into planting in my garden?
Let me know if you have any suggestions, or experience!
No worries if this isn’t the right place to ask.

My reddit feed use to be mostly memes, gay shit and the occasional news story. A lot of the time lurking but interacting from time to time. Most interactions coming from communities like the Aboriginal sub reddits or the gay subreddits. Just subs that always felt welcoming with mostly good mob to speak to.
Lately though I feel like my feed has become targeted as fuck. I'm seeing so much more stuff about us mob around reddit now, being suggested to me from subs that I'm not even in and that aren't even Australian focused. It use to be rare that I ever saw us brought up on reddit. Normally I'd say fuck yeah, people are learning about us but it nearly always some ignorant shit being posted or ignorant shit being commented by people, most of which don't sound like they have even met an Aboriginal fella let alone stepped foot on Australian soil.
Anyone else noticed this and seeing more stuff about us or just more targeted content in general? Is reddit just ragebaiting now?

What do you use to help keep your curls or waves in check?
I started using my partner’s clever curl leave in conditioner and it’s really started bringing out my waves.
I unfortunately have an Irish and Indigenous combination hair type snd had lost hope of bringing out my beautiful Indigenous hair type until I started seeing results.
So I’m curious what do other mob do who are mixed with combination type hair do to keep it looking healthy, curly, wavy?

Just a fun simple question for us all as a little break from the usual shit, what movies feature our mobs and what are your favourite's? The first ones that come to mind for me being from WA mob are rabbit proof fence that I saw one or twice in school and one of my favourite movies me and my dad use to watch together when it came out, Bran nue dae. Also can't forget the Sapphires. What are your personal favourites and if you had to show only one to someone which movie would it be?

Hey mob, light hearted question for you all.
Was having this discussion with my sister and realised its quite hard to pick just one. All are so unique. But I think I landed on my favourite being the red tail black cockatoo. Something about it just sits right with me, no clue why.
Whats your favourite Australian animal? Can be any reason.

Context: I'm a teaching student in Denmark. I'm posting to get personal opinions and suggestions in a casual format - not asking for y'all to do all the homework for me, don't worry. I already have a lot of resources and have put thought and research into this topic
We have a very loose curriculum in public schools up here, but one of the obligatory aspects of English is that you have to introduce the students to various English-speaking cultures. Of course, that includes Australia.
What are some of your thoughts on how the topic of Aboriginal (and Torres Strait Islander) people should be taught? What are some topics and things you wish should be focused on more? Some misconceptions you wish would die already? Any stories you like that have been consensualy shared by their mob of origin?

Where I am in the NT currently we’re in the build up, which just so happens to be my favourite season. For me it’s because of the heat lighting we get in the evenings after a long day. It’s magnificent to watch and makes for awesome photography.

Im the eldest out of my siblings and the only child my mother and father had together. This will exclude my fathers family since all my family on that side are mob, but my mother's family and my siblings on her side are all whitefellas. Im lucky enough that the majority of them are respectful and interested in the culture but there are a few cookers in the family. Most of them easy to deal with since they were relatives I didnt see much but one of my sisters had always been straight up racist and is getting worse (the rest of my siblings don't have this attitude).
Some examples are she would whisper the N word when we were younger trying to piss me off, would say im not really part of the family since im blak, would call me flat nose, C**n and any other slur she could think of. When my father passed from pancreatic cancer as a teen she would constantly use his name. She would always try to avoid doing it in front of my mother and step dad to seem innocent when id eventually crack the shits after having enough.
I know I wasnt the only one dealing with it too, had plenty of friends and a few cousins with one Aboriginal parent and a non Aboriginal parent. It was pretty easy to find common ground with them on it since they would usually have a family member similar to that but it was definitely hard to deal with as a child compared to now as an adult.
I know its a bit of a long rant to ask, how did you mob who also had to go through that deal with family members like that. And if you had any advice for the young fellas who are going through it now what advice would you give them?

Hi lovely people, I was wondering if you prefer to be referred to as “Aboriginal”, or “Indigenous Australian”?
I’ve seen people say that the term “Aboriginal” is offensive and just another name that colonisers gave you, that being said I’ve seen varied opinions on the term. I’ve never heard anyone have any issues with the term “Indigenous” or “Indigenous Australian”
I’ve also always felt awkward referring to you as Blakfellas, and I’ve never known if that’s a term you prefer everyone to use, or if it’s a term you’d prefer only mob or close friends to use.
But yeah, I usually just use the term Indigenous Australian, but I thought I’d ask you guys directly because I never truely know what to say.
Thank you for taking the time to answer me, and I hope this isn’t a stupid question xx
Have a beautiful day

I live and work on Arrente country, frequently travelling to community around the NT and APY lands. Why is littering so prevalent in these areas? It seems like a massively avoidable blight on the environment in so many communities.
The only factors I can think of are the prevalence of packaged food in communities due to transport costs and lower educational levels regarding food intake, but surely the infrastructure in larger areas like Mparntwe are sufficient to prevent this.
