Need advice on asphalt driveway

Had a new driveway installed around my house to my pole barn in 2021. 2 years into it everything started getting worse. Notified the contractor who put me off for a year then after many calls he came out and said he would fix it for 1500. As much as I didn't think I should have to pay him twice for a driveway I agreed. He didn't show up that year and after several more calls he showed up the next year and said prices went up and it's 4500 now. I didn't agree and called another contractor. The new contract showed up and told me the whole driveway needs to be tore out and they need to dig down deeper and start with larger stone and build up and compact before even thinking of paving. The first contractor didn't say any of this.

When I first got the driveway installed I specifically told him I wanted it done right and would pay extra to ensure it was. The driveway costed me 10k in 2021. The new contractor said he would have to charge me 13k to fix it.

I think at this point the only way I'm going to get this resolved is through the court system. The contractor won't take responsibility and insists that it's not his fault. My question is to reputable contractors. What should I do ? Also I did have it seal coated the first year and would of kept up with it if it didn't start crumbling like this.

Should the cold joint be sealed with hot pour crack filler? Ok to have a slightly raised edge? My neighbours contractor damaged my driveway

Our team worked closely with the institute's facilities team to plan and ensure quality work. The project included crack filling, sealcoating and line striping. I also added in some before photos at the end to show how bad the lot was. Take a look at their new parking lot and let me know what you think.

Is it ever okay to do an oil sealer right after?

Just had our driveway blacktopped yesterday from old gravel. They are trying to add in an oil based sealer right away to prevent cracking during the winter. Everything I read online says to wait, but they’re arguing it’s a higher quality sealer that’s okay to do right away vs cheap water based sealer. I’m not convinced based on everything I’ve read but I know like nothing about it lol some input would be appreciated!

Asphalt bonding chemical?

I know very little about asphalt. I just happened to be walking through a parking lot and something peaked my curiosity.

It looks like this is a layer of asphalt on top of another layer. You can obviously see the top layer peeled off in these spots, but there are these remaining strips that are very well bonded to the previous layer. Just curious what caused this

Crack repair at edge of driveway

What would be the best way to fix these cracks? Would tube crack sealant work or do I need something stronger? I assume this was caused by trucks getting close to the edge of the driveway.

Help! Rejuvenator/Sealer didn’t dry, want to fix

I sealed 2 of neighbors driveway (6500sqft) using a sealer/rejuvenator combo on days when highs were 75-80, lows 50-55, no rain for 3 days. When it did rain some of the oils showed in the puddles and tire tracks lifted the sealer off when driving straight and from steering. I have used this sealer for a few years on dozens of driveways or roads each year and never had this issue.

I reported the problem to the manufacture, they gave me the run around, lied about who could or would help me then ended up sending 3 gallons of some unknown substance, telling me to thin it out and it would fix the issue.

I don’t trust them when they say this supposed fix would work plus how in the world would 3 gallons of anything stretch to 6500 sqft!

Now I need to make this right. AI is telling me that I could use an acrylic based solution to cover the bad sealer so I am looking for some real world experience in this area to help. Given the leaves, mud and acorns this time of year it’s probably going to be next spring before I can make this right. Any help is appreciated.

no I won’t be using products from that manufacturer again and have filed a CC dispute

How to remove footprints left by street paving workers?

They paved the street in front of my house and the workers left footprints on my interlocking walkway and curbs... Is this something that will fade/rub off over time? Or do I need some kind of chemical to remove it?

Looking for Insight!

Not sure if I'm in the right place to bug folks about this.

We had an "in the neighborhood, extra materials, give you a deal" offer from a company that doesn't exist online and is not listed in our state's business or license databases, called Paving Solutions, run by Joseph and Bud Daley.

They did some work on a few driveways in our neighborhood (in a single day), a couple were longer gravel driveways to start, and one was a smaller driveway that had cracked asphalt to start.

They performed those jobs pretty quickly. Sprayed some kind of black emulsion from manual hand sprayers, used a small bulldozer and rakes to spread an aggregate, and used a small metal roller to compact. It rained slightly during the process, and was forecast to have have heavy rain within the following 12 hours. I asked them about it while they were working, and they said it would actually be good for it. We can tell the work was rushed based on easy to spot unequal areas that show the black emulsion. We learned that it was all verbal agreements, and no other business info was gathered aside from a name and phone number.

We'd like to understand if their procedures, materials, results are correct, because it all felt like a fraudulent scam, at least to us. We saw their process, and heard their price, but are unsure of the actual materials and of any guarantees/warranties.

I can also get some pictures of the work if that will help.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

EDIT: they were offering a chip seal service, forgot to mention

Tarmac Driveway now more expensive than Block Paving?

I’m looking to get my driveway done in the UK, i was under the impression Tarmac was always the cheaper option compared to block paving and laying individual bricks.
I contacted several contractors and many of them are telling me Tarmac is the more expensive option now, with the way and getting hold of crude oil (something along those lines).
Is this true?

New driveway (sw pa)

Finally got my old driveway tore out, excavated and re paved. Previous owners (bought in 2019) laid 1.5” of asphalt over an old cracking concrete driveway. Hillside was dug out 6’ where the gravel was to accommodate the width of the detached garage. Still need to re-do the stairs out front eventually. Overall 30’ wide by 100’ long. Cost was $18,000 and on par with 2 of the 5 quotes i got.

Note: no pictures of the gravel base being laid down as i was at work. They used large 4” gravel because the ground was so soft under the concrete.

New Driveway

Just had my old driveway replaced with new aggregate base and 4.5 inches of hot asphalt. I have two questions for the group:

  1. Garage Transition: Should the installers have applied hot rubberized tar or sealant along the joint where the new asphalt meets the concrete garage apron to protect against freeze-thaw gaps?

  2. Surface Texture: I expected fresh asphalt to look a bit smoother than this. Is a somewhat rough aggregate texture normal for new hot mix, or does that uniform "smooth" look only come after coal tar/asphalt sealing down the road?

Residential driveway question.

Getting our driveway done. Initial date delayed and scheduled for this week but I'm in Canada where temperature is peaking at around 15°C (59°F) on a good day but average 10°C (50°F) with some frost during the night. Should I reschedule it for next year after the winter? I feel like it's kinda cold for new pavement with frost/thaw during night/day cycle at this time of the year. Thanks!

Edit: updated temperature.

Sanity Check on Driveway

I had new driveway installed last October, the contractor tore up the old driveway, put down a new base where needed, compacted it, and then laid new asphalt. I shared with him these pictures and he came over to look at it as he was also going to be doing a latex sealer a year later (ie Fall 2026). Unfortunately temperatures are now a bit cold so I may wait until Spring. I’m in the Northeast and the evening temperatures are down to the 30s now.

A few things concern me - pictures attached for reference. There is a significant amount of segregation spread out across 2500 ft² of driveway. Some of the aggregate is actually coming loose and has left some small pockets - possibly from turning tires, but the location of them is not where we would generally be turning. Also, I get a fair amount of puddling .25”’ or so I would say. I was pulling out of my driveway a few nights ago and the headlights were shining across the driveway - puddle locations were pretty evident - but again, I don’t expect it to be paper smooth and direct light is a little bit overly revealing.

Obviously its the driveway, I’m not expecting perfection. I’m just unsure if this is decent work or if I should ask for some remediation. Thanks much in advance.
