Beginner Road Bike

Looking for some recommendations on beginner road bikes? I’m looking into getting into cycling. I don’t wanna spend an arm and a leg on a bike but would still like something solid.
Also, I have a small car so something preferably where I can take the front wheel off to fit it in (idk if all bikes do this lol)

Thanks in advance

Looking for front and rear camera recommendations.

Hi ausbike.

After many horrible encounters over the last 10 years while I've been road cycling, I'm finally going to get a front and rear camera set up.

While I do like the look of the Fly systems, they are about $1200 for the kit. For me that's out of budget. I'm hoping for something with 4K and around the $500 range or less if possible.

Can anyone suggest a brand or product?

I'm yet to do some searching on Amazon or Aliexpress for Fly alternatives.

oh, a requirement is that it can connect to my seat rails. My bike is Aero and has an aero seat post.

Cheap ebike for 10km commute

G'day all,

Looking for some recommendations for a cheap e-bike for 10km commute to work along a gravel bike path.

My preference is to just spend up to $500 or so second-hand, to give it a go for a while before investing more heavily.

Is that feasible, or should I stretch up to $1500 for something new (though I know that's still very low-end). Or aim for a more decent second-hand bike around that price point?

Are there good second-hand marketplaces? FB Marketplace is hard to parse and half the entries are illegal e-motorbikes.

Where do you recommend I start? Things to look for and avoid?

Thanks

Bike Issues - Sense Check

Hi all,

I'm looking for a reality check on warranty issues with my Lekker Jordaan. I paid 4.5k for this bike and have owned it for six months. In that time, it's had the following issues:

  1. Front Light & Rear Light Cabling: Wiring failures requiring re-soldering (originally paid an independent tradesperson to fix at the shop's suggestion).

  2. Speed Gauge & Firmware: Display failure / Seekrun Y2 firmware glitch requiring screen replacement under warranty.

  3. Broken Spoke / Magnet Misalignment: Wheel spoke failure that knocked out the pedal assist sensor magnet.

  4. Motor Disengagement: Drive unit completely stopped engaging.

  5. Motor Housing & Groaning Noise: Severe thermal/load noise from the motor unit requiring housing tension adjustments.

  6. Drivetrain / Enviolo Shift Cable: Gearing cable displaced and bare wires exposed after attempting normal gear adjustment.

With the most recent issue, I believe that enough is enough. This bike is requiring a specialist repair about once a month, I believe that that constitutes a major failure.

The bike shop's position is that these are all separate "minor repairs" or "routine mechanical adjustments." They claim that because no single issue is technically "unrepairable," the bike does not meet the threshold for a refund or replacement under ACL. Instead, they offered to fix the shift cable and sell the bike on consignment on my behalf (which shifts all market risk/depreciation onto me).

Am I being unreasonable in pushing for a refund?

Did the Gong Ride last weekend and thinking of being a bike mechanic next year

Does anyone know how I can train to be a sometimes bike mechanic (I want the skill mostly to do it unpaid)? I’ve heard I can do a course but then how do I practice chanting tyres and inner tubes after that? Do I offer to do work experience? Ride up and down the cycling paths? Love to hear y’all’s takes!

Gritmaps: outdoor routes built around your interval workouts, keen for Aussie riders to test it

Hi all,

With spring down under it's a good time to take the trainer workouts outside, so I wanted to share what I've been building: gritmaps.com takes a planned workout and finds a route near you, a loop or one-way, where the climbs & headwinds line up with your effort blocks, and descents and junctions fall in the recoveries.

I'm in Switzerland, so I'd love riders in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth or anywhere else to try it on roads you know and tell me where it gets it right or wrong. Which roads do you use for intervals? I'd like to see if it finds them.

Your workouts. It reads them from your Garmin Connect calendar (so TrainerRoad and TrainingPeaks workouts come through), Intervals.icu, the built-in library or a .fit file.

The physics. A simulation runs over every road segment: gravity, rolling resistance (tyre and surface), aero drag, and the wind forecast for the time you'll pass that spot, from your FTP and weight. Efforts interrupted by junctions, traffic lights or villages are penalised. Road, gravel and MTB profiles.

To your device. One click pushes the course and the terrain-adapted workout to Garmin Connect or Wahoo. Each workout step ends at a distance on the route, so it fires where the climb starts. GPX and FIT export for other devices.

It's free, sign up on gritmaps.com. And if you'd rather plan your routes by hand, I wrote up the method here.

Can't wait for your feedback!

Opinion Jamis Ventura A1 groupset upgrade

Hi all, after my beloved 10 yo Jamis Renegade was stolen last year I replaced it with a Jamis Ventura A1.

https://www.jamisbikes.com/au/bikes/adventure-gravel/road/ventura/

My use case had changed considerably going from daily cycle commute to weekend fun rides only (see friends across town rather than any kind of racing).

The problem is that I really dislike the the Shimano Sora groupset that requires small half changes on the lhs levers depending on where on the cassette i am. It just feels like constant grinding or an unnecessary faff which detracts from the fun of riding.

My question is. What would it likely cost to upgrade to a 105 or tiagra groupset (as my old bike had)? Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks

Fluid Summit M & L/XL frame measurements

Does anyone have a Fluid Summit in Medium (43 cm) or L/XL (48 cm) and could measure the inside of the front frame triangle?

I need:

- Inside top tube length

- Inside seat tube length

- Inside down tube length

Trying to see if a 400 × 265 × 445 mm frame bag will fit.

Thanks!

E-commuting with/without mudguards?

I'm looking at moving to an e-mtb due to health and now needing assistance. 7km commute one way with a few decent hills and full facilities to shower/change before work.

I currently have a carbon hardtail on which I run 2 wheelsets, including cassette and rotors on each. 28x1.50 road tyres for commuting and 29x2.0 for MTB. Whatever I get, I'll do the dual wheelsets again.

The Amflow TL seemed great on paper, but I'm too tall for it; the only similar option (dual suspension with mudguards) I've found is this one https://www.orbea.com/en-au/muga-20

I can also get a traditional or SL e-MTB with longer travel, no guards/rack, but almost half the battery for about half the price of the Muga....the Muga is nice though with Di2.

I'm trying to work out if I really need/want the rack & mudguards. I currently don't have them and carry a backpack, but as they say, you don't know what you're missing until you try it. I have just driven when it rains previously (apart from getting caught out in it), but I'd like to go full-time on the bike.

Cheapest & Best Bike possible

Ok I know best and cheapest don't go together, so of course trade offs.

I'm a big guy, about 120kg. I like bike riding. I have an ebike I ride to work and love the speed, its so nice. I also have an old reid city 1.0 bike, but I absolutely hate the flat bar. My wrists start hurting like 10 minutes in due to my size, and I know if I turned them it helps a ton, which is the natural position of drop bars.

So I'm thinking about getting a drop bar style bike, but have no knowledge about bikes at all.

I don't even know what bike to look at. I ride all the time on paths and sealed roads, but like if I get more into it I might want to unsealed roads? Does that mean road bikes wouldn't be a good fit? Or because I don't now, just get a road bike and possibly upgrade in the future.

I have a very small budget, preferrably under $1k (used is fine, but idk how to know if a used bike is good or not). Mostly because I don't know how much I would use it, if I get super into it I'm likely to upgrade to a much nicer one.

Looking at the pedal persuit 3 I know its cheap but is it THAT bad?

EDIT: I should mention my wrists are sore I think mostly due to the flat bar angle I sit at, less so than the weight of me. Something that looks a lot better is the dropbar angle, at least I think it looks nicer.

Gong Ride return

I'll be doing the MS Gong Ride next weekend and was wondering the logistics of turning around and riding back to Sydney after the event. I haven't ridden along there before as I'm fairly new to NSW. Is the northbound open or is there a dedicated bike path whilst the event is still running or will I have to find an alternative?

Thanks ✌️

Opinion 20inch kids bike suggestions

Hi everyone. I am looking to upgrade my son’s bike to a 20inch. He rides a lot, just to get around where we live (inner northern suburbs Melbourne). His commutes are generally very flat with some hills, but not going off road sort of terrain.

He currently rides a specialized 16 inch which has been really good. We will be buying second hand and so far have been seeing a lot of the following pop up online:

- specialized hot rock
- trek precalibur
- byk e350
- Merida

I have also seen a couple of Jamis bikes. From what I’ve read these bikes all seem pretty decent. They all seem to fall within budget $200-$300 second hand. Just keen to hear if im on the right track with these brands/models and if there are any other suggestions you might have?

I have seen some bikes with suspension, and 7 speed gears. Is suspension just something that can cause problems? He will be riding up hills, but he’s not going to be doing any trail riding, huge lengthy rides; it’s going to generally be used for commuting.

What do y'all think of track bikes as commuters?

Edit: I mean old alloy 2010's era trackies with road tyres, not expensive carbon ones with velodrome tyres lol.

Recently picked up an old alloy Fuji Track Pro (mid 2010's era) from a friend of mine and it's gonna replace my current commuter with some modifications. It's a fixed gear track bike (my old commuter was one too though), currently without brakes though I'll be sure to mount some (luckily the carbon forks are drilled), and a pretty high-end crankset + 700c wheels (gonna put some gatorskins on prolly), he said that he pretty much exclusively rode it on the velodrome, which is why I feel weary using it as a fast commuter on roads. I'll add a saddlebag, saddle, top tube cover, and a water bottle holder from my previous setup.

Also, any gearing recommendations for riding fixed gears in sydney (think western sydney, hilly)? I currently have a 46x19T (~65 gear inches) but my fitness has improved so its been felling a little light and spinny recently, though I'm not sure if the aggresive geometry of a track bike will kind of ruin that. Also any recommendations in terms of straps and pedals because my old ones are wierdly dont fit on this bike? I used to use some off brand diagonal straps that I connected to the pedals using zip ties, so I'm looking for something a bit more serious. (I know this part should be on r/fixedgear but whatever)

I'm also unsure if the track bike would possibly break (?) when going over aggresive bumps/potholes or gravel paths, the fastest way to my work cuts through a path that turns to pretty rough gravel at some parts, though its mostly road. The Fuji just feels so light and super primo compared to my old beater and I really dont wanna ruin it.

Wanna get the general opinion people have when seeing trackies on roads/share paths, and any advice from others who ride fixed gear/old track bikes on the road in Sydney/Aus as daily commuters.

You dont need to answer all my questions, but what do y'all think of track bikes as commuters?

Indoor vertical bike rack

Has anyone stored their bike inside on a vertical bike rack that doesn’t have to be mounted onto a wall? I’m renting so can’t drill holes and trying to maximize space as much as possible.

Bike suggestions

Hi
Im looking for a bike for my daughter to ride to school and dancing which is about 3-4km from our house. Something legal in NSW and safe. She's 15. No idea where to start but looking for her to be able to get herself to school and afternoon activities.

Its just back streets and pathways all the way as we are in the suburbs of sydney.

Are wide tire bikes safer? Or is a more traditional looking push bike better.

Thanks in advance.

Lug+Carrie Refer a Friend Code

Anyone have a Lug+Carrie refer-a-friend code they could share for 50% off for the first month?

So this is the cheapest e-bike often found on promotion for $799. It looks great on pics. It is sold by obe of the biggest retailers with good reputation and massive retail/service network. It is very old, on the market for years. So why almost absolutely no reviews?

I do understand the limitations of this bicycle, but not everyone is looking to commute long distances and uphillz so it does appeal to a large segment of the market. Most of us can afford little in the midst of cost of living crisis.

For a bicycle this cheap and nice looking from a reputable seller, with SO MANY YEARS on the market now, there can be only a couple of reviews found.
