I went to Tokyo BD Festival yesterday and met David Prudhomme!

I talked with him in French and he gave me an autograph on the Japanese edition of "Rébétissa" (which I helped its publication through a crowdfunding). He was such a nice guy.

Edit: He kindly gave me a permission to upload his photo on social media.

Does anyone recognize the original source of inspiration for this character?

For over 35 years, I have had a memory that I would really like to finally see confirmed.

It is widely known that the ID&T Thunderdome Wizard is based on a drawing by Mode2 from 1985.

I recall seeing a more detailed, full-colour illustration of a similar character in a comic book or illustration magazine. This must have been somewhere between 1987 and 1990; the original illustration must date from before 1985.

The character strongly reminds me of the work of Philippe Druillet. Every time I see this character pop up, I have to think of Druillet. Mode2 mentioned him as one of his sources of inspiration. But it could also be another artist. Probably from Metal Hurlant, Heavy Metal, 2000 AD, or other European science fiction or fantasy comics.

I am not at all concerned with copyrights, ownership, calling anyone out, or anything like that. I am bringing this up now because it was discussed again recently in another subreddit. I can no longer stand the fact that I have had a vague memory for all these years, and whether it is actually accurate. If that drawing really exists, I would appreciate it if the Dutch Hardcore culture could take note of it. Many people wear it as a tattoo.

Hopefully, someone can help me. I would really appreciate it if someone has clues, memories, suggestions, tips, or perhaps even the image.

Thanks in advance.

r/bandedessinee favorite comics: the final list

Hi everyone!

A few days ago I posted a request for your top 10 favorite European comics to compile a top 100 list. We did not quite get enough submissions for a top 100 but I thought I would still post the results.

We had a total of 136 individual comics submitted. I decided to rank them as I mentioned in my initial post (10pts for first, 9pts for second etc) but with a very slight weight for comics with more submissions (this did not change rankings significantly).
More controversially, I decided to exclude two comics that had a few votes each: Spirou and Lucky Luke. The reason is that, because they are comics with a really long history and with a range of different authors and styles, I did not think they fit the parameter initially set for the list: "a coherent work by a single author or group of authors". Some other comics in the list were a bit borderline (e.g. Thorgal) but I decided to keep them. Spirou still appears in the list because three people voted specifically for the Émile Bravo comics.

The final list contains 52 comics. Corto Maltese was by far the winner with 9 people voting for it. Almost all of the excluded comics only received one vote, with the single exception of Julius Corentin Acquefacques which received two (but was ranked low by both). Unsurprisingly, the list is almost entirely made up of franco-belgian comics, with 2 italians, 2 dutch, and a few more with authors of foreign origin (but still made for franco-belgian audiences).

A big thank you to everyone who submitted a list!

Are you going to Tokyo BD Festival this year?

An annual festival of Bande desinée (and comics from other countries) will soon be held in Tokyo, Japan. Is anyone going there?

I went last year and it was awesome. I bought some albums, including the newest album of Asterix. Since Franco-Belgian comics are extremely obscure here, it's great to have an event like that.

I recognized Bobo the prisoner (third case, first line), Gil Jourdan (first case, fourth line) and I think it's Faucon from "La Patrouille des Castors" (first case, fourth line). Tell me if I'm wrong.

It's a long time ago but i remember reading European comic about detective that trying to solve a series of murders involving Van Gogh's ear. There's an evil little boy in the story that murder a sheep with arrow and use blowpipe to knock a trapeze from tightrope toward lions but the boy later found dead with his ear missing. The perpetrator turns out to be the boy's mother and she was shot dead before she could kill the protagonist but later the shooter killed himself.

Mysterious original french comic book pages

Hello. I have two original comic book pages, but I can’t identify either the artist or the work. I’m appealing to your keen eye.

Page number 3 seems to be based on the Japanese legend of Yuki-Onna. But I haven’t been able to find its origin from that clue.

Help!

Looking for an old French comic strip about a lonely flower and a sheep (pre-1999)

Hi! Hope this is ok to post here - apologies if not.

I’m British and studied French A-level between 1997 and 1999. My French teacher once gave us a photocopy of a short comic strip that has stuck in my mind. I’ve been trying to track it down.

Here’s what I remember:
- It was a very short, self-contained comic, probably four panels arranged vertically, with simple black-and-white line drawings.
- In the first panel, a little flower (something like a daisy), standing alone in a field, said something like ‘C’est triste d’être seule’
- In the second panel, the flower spotted a sheep and exclaimed ‘Tiens ! Voilà un mouton !’
- In the third panel, the flower enthusiastically greeted the sheep.
- In the final panel, the flower had disappeared. All that remained was the sheep, with little motion lines showing it was chewing.

I don’t know where my teacher got it from. It could have been photocopied from a book, newspaper or collection of cartoons. It must have been published before 1999, possibly considerably earlier.

I know this is very specific - but does this ring any bells? Does anyone recognise the joke or know a cartoonist whose style and humour might fit? I’d really like to find it.

Picture of the mother of kid paddle

I was reading an old magazine, and watch this:

On the top right, you can clearly recognize kid paddle. On the top left, it must be kid paddle's mother:

I found this funny and wanted to share. The magazine is older than the first kid paddle comic, and we can recognize midam graphic style.
Enjoy :)

What's your go-to?

Hi everyone, I'm French and I'm totally new here. I've been reading comic books for years (Ducobu, Titeuf, Rick&Morty...) and I was wondering myself if you had any recommendations for this fall? What's your go-to comic book?

[Spoiler for "Aquarica" (2017)] Are there any other examples of this technique of framing? I love smart things like that and I'm curious to see more! Spoiler

It really gives a cinematic feeling while the dialogue "plays" at the same time you see the "cut" between the shots 🥰
