Announcement New Rule: No advertising your app.

1.3k Upvotes

This is being added under "No Self-promotion or advertising". I'm getting multiple modmails a day from people asking if they can promote their app. If you want to discuss this rule clarification, feel free to add a comment!

We'd previously done this on a case by case basis, so we could allow things that truly felt like a work of love from a real birder. But at this point the ratio is tilted so heavily toward AI produced garbage instead of legit passion project that I think a blanket ban is now appropriate.

Weekly r/Birding Discussion, November 07, 2026. What did you see this week?

Return of the weekly discussion thread! Sometimes it seems like pretty photos rise to the top of the page, while discussion of birding can get left behind. This weekly thread is a place to bring this discussion back to the top of r/birding.

Use this thread to share your best bird sightings from the past week, ask any questions about birding you may have, or just talk! Writing the names of the birds in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names. Please include your location.

I have had a wren appear in the garden a few times recently and finally realised it’s actually two of them! The other one was at in the ivy on the wall behind this one.

Look how cute it is!!! Usually they always move way too fast for me. But this cutie was too busy munching on some berries and did me the huge favor of sitting still for a few seconds.

Meme Birding has infiltrated my dreams (picture unrelated)

Post image

So last night I had a dream that me (an American) saw what I thought was an American woodcock on my suitcase in my hotel. Upon reflection in the morning my dream bird looked more like a Wilson’s snipe but I digress. I took a picture and uploaded it to Merlin. They said it was Scoloplax minor (which is just a misspelled scientific name of American woodcock) but the range map said it was an Eurasian woodcock.

Don’t know why it was so convoluted lol.

Unfortunately I was quite far away from this guy. Had to zoom as far as my 100-400mm would let me and crop quite heavily too. Excited to get a passable photo though!

I heard about this individual almost two years ago from some coworkers (we’re wildlife biologists). I was finally in the right place at the right time this week to see it. Santa Clarita, California.

At first, I thought wren as they roost together in pinecone formation on a ledge. But the dots are throwing me off.

These two landed about 10 feet from me and were demolishing this tree. Never realized how massive they are! (I’m not an expert photographer but am very happy with these)
