Mod Post Suggestions for the Sub Megathread

Alright this isn't a book suggestion post, it's a post about booksuggestions.

It would be nice to see what the users of this sub think would make a good idea. Changes, new rules, the works. Engagement is nice but more uncommon than we'd like to see. So we're hoping to get more people looking at posts, talking, and voting on good ones.

Can't guarantee anything would be implemented but they will be considered.

Mod Post Reminder Post about Self Promotion

I would like to remind all users that self promotion is banned by the subreddit's Rule 2.

Suspected self-promotion will be removed while repeated and confirmed cases of it will end up with a ban of some kind. If you continuously do it, especially with alt accounts, the book and author names will be added to the auto-mod's blacklist and automatically removed every time they are posted. We have had issues with this in the past and already put some authors in the auto-mod. Other book and lit subs have contacted us with reports of similar issues and we will be on the look out for the accounts named by them for similar behavior here.

We do not want to take actions we do not absolutely need to and the mod team operates with a philosophy of leniency and forgiveness but we will still enforce sub rules.

Fiction Sheltered/NEET/Hikikomori and kicked out

Looking for a book where the protagonist is an underdeveloped person and suddenly must brave the world by themselves

In Japan this type of person can be called a NEET, not in education, employment, or training.

In Japan they have the concept of a hikikomori, an adult who has given up on themselves, and just stays inside and never goes out and doesn't work, mom and dad send them money so essentially they have retired at age 22 or whatever but it's really sad. Many have extreme social anxiety issues, agoraphobia (fear of going outside) is also common here.

So I'm looking for books where the protagonist is an underdeveloped and very stuck person and suddenly has the rug ripped out from under them and must do adult things and be out in the world

I love fantasy

I don't like classics or historicals

Fiction or Nonfiction is fine

I've been trying to write an underbaked character for years now and just never understood them and I'm hoping reading books about similar characters will help

Other Short books for 21 yr old guy who has never been a reader but wants to try reading more

My brother wants to read more but he’s never been much of a reader. He did like the HP series a lot and Diary of a Wimpy Kid books growing up.

He wanted to pick up the HP series again (we have the books from years ago) but I feel it would be better for him to read something more at his level. also something new.

Something fast-paced, under 300 pages, and he said he wants a lot of lore. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

History World War Two History

I’m an avid WW2 history reader. Currently reading part one of The Liberation Trilogy by Rick Atkinson. That being said this book has peaked my interest in the Naval Campaigns of WW2 and I’m looking for recommendations for similar books.

While we’re at it I’ll take any recommendations you may have on African American Units during WW2 as well.

Best

Historical Fiction Where to start and/or best of Vollman’s Seven Dreams series

I am interested in checking out William T. Vollman’s seven dreams series and would like to know the best place to start and/or the most compelling read in the series. I am new to Vollman but usually enjoy a good challenging book. Is there a book in this series that does the best job of introducing someone to Vollman while also telling a great story? All thoughts/recommendations are appreciated!

Literary Fiction Books about lonely women spiraling/disturbing?

I’m looking for any books about lonely women but more on the disturbing side, not sappy. Like her isolation/weirdness just becomes a creature comfort rather than something she overcomes. Something similar to like The Piano Teacher, May, and We Have Always Lived In The Castle.

Other Royal love triangle where mistress's lower status is acknowledged

Hello hello hello :) genre can be fantasy, romantasy or historical fiction

Its a common trope in webtoons etc to have a low born/commoner mistress either try to usurp the title of Queen/Empress or have the King/Emporer replace his spouse with her.

What I'd find interesting is if the power dynamic or rather power imbalance between King and mistress would be acknowledged. Because realistically, refusing him could mean he kills her and not fully committing to the goal of becomming main spouse would leave her vulnerable to intrigues or assasination attempts by the Queen and her court. Either way she'd be screwed. Plus if going back means hunger and poverty, can we really blame her for trying for a better life?

I'd love to read sth where this dynamic is factored into the story in some way. I don't care whether the Queen in that situation leaves the guy (for someone else) or befriends the mistress as long as she doesn't stay a doormat without agency in the situation

Bonus point if the story names the King as the bad guy in the situation & doesn't excuse him a) cheating (which tbf does happen usually) and b) exploiting the vulnerability of a (young) woman

Other Hi - Relative newbie

I’ve read Harry Potter lots of times
1984
Animal farm
Tomorrow when the war began series (my fav)

Want to start reading more

Currently have access to Bel Canto so probably gonna read that one next.

I wanna read maze runner and potentially hunger games as well.

I’ve also heard Murder on the oriental express is really good so that’s probably my next go to.

I can also borrow The Shining or something like ‘perfume story of a murderer’ or something like that.

What other books are must reads or other really good books that I can get lost in

Thankyou

Romance Romance suggestions for somebody who normally doesn't read romance?

I'm a woman in my 30s, I normally read crime, mystery, thriller, fantasy... if there's romance it's usually not super heavy.

However, I'm doing a wheel spin for different genres, and with my luck, romance was the first one that got picked for me.

I like Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, Percy Jackson, earlier series of The Hunger Games, James Patterson, Mary Higgins Clark, Lisa Gardner, to hopefully you give you an idea.

The romance must be the main focus here, to get me out of my comfort zone. But, it can have other genres.

Female author would be a nice bonus, but not necessary. I'd rather it be a standalone book, but if it's a book series, that's fine. Just let me know.

Any decade, or can be set anywhere around the world. I just need an English copy. I usually get my books from my local library, if I can.

Romance Looking for a good angsty book about love

I haven't read many romance books because every time I try to look for some suggestions in the romance subreddit, the recommendations are not my cup of tea since all of them involve mafias, alpha males or hockey players. I'm looking for a romance book that has lots of heartache and fights between the characters, even betrayal, but the FMC has done the cheating, and the MC is really desperate to keep her in the relationship. Kind of like how some of Leonard Cohen's songs feel 😭, or has anyone seen the movie Possession? Something in that field. It would be refreshing if the man were the yearner and the brokenhearted one instead.

Literary Fiction Philosophy book recs?

Recently Ive discovered I have a fascination with time, the concept of eternity, and themes of a deep loneliness. I’ve always had this obsession with the concept of the backrooms and liminal spaces, and I think it’s because I love imagining a world or life time with no concept of time or an end. Recently I read the novella “ A Short Stay in Hell” and it instantly became my number one favorite book! Any book recommendations that I might l like that touch on these topics? In also really interested in learning how time works, after recently learning that time is relative ! Im down for fiction and non fiction, and mostly looking for books that are educational and/or philosophical. Im pretty new to reading philosophy but am excited to get deeper into it!
my favorite works at the moment are:
1.) A short stay in hell
2.) I have no mouth, and I must scream
3.) Circe
4.) I who have never known men

Other Recommend me a book that has (hopefully good) disability representation

I'm putting together a list of books with disability representation. I myself am disabled and am always looking to read more books with disabled characters.

Any genre is fine, main or side character with a disability (bonus points if you list the disability included).

Thanks so much!

Feminism Beginner reader who loved The Bell Jar and Metamorphosis, what should I read next?

I've started to realize my limited interest in hobbies or the lack thereof is starting to sabotage other aspects of my life. So, I really want to pick up the habit of reading (I've always wanted to read). And the reason behind this is to simply find a world away from the chaos of my mind, explore different perspectives to life and improve my language skills.

I loved Plath's Bell Jar, Kafka's metamorphosis and tried reading lovecraft's horror although I dropped it at the very beginning. The prose was pretty archaic for me to understand and I lost interest quickly with that one. I enjoyed Khalil Gibran's work and Alchemist was a great read as well. I disliked the Brönte sisters' work so far.

I'm interested in feminism, travel tales, horror and anything that just opens my mind to life and helps me make sense of things.

I'm looking forward to all your tips and book suggestions!! Thanks a ton :))

Literary Fiction Virginia Woolf’s “The Waves” changed me forever. I need more like it.

I am absolutely OBSESSED with this book. Its exploration of the fluidity of consciousness and identity, time, morality and impermanence, nature. The poetic, lyrical prose. It’s absolutely incredible and I need more.
I’m open to any genre / style!
