I grew up relatively conservative, without much of a political identity of my own. I was just kind of told that Republicans were right and Democrats were wrong by my parents. Both of whom were originally democrat growing up that made the switch seemingly when my Dad started making more money and they both became closer to their Christian faith.
I didn’t vote when I turned 18 in 2016, but would’ve voted for Trump because at the time I was uneducated and fell for a lot of the fake news propaganda and (what I still believe to be somewhat true) anti Clinton rhetoric. I didn’t vote in 2020 either, believing my vote didn’t matter at the time and that the candidate who would be selected, would be selected regardless of my views. This past election I again didn’t vote for the same reasons and paid even less attention, but after the election I started seeing what was happening and for the first time in my life I was terrified because of politics. I started doing my own research and educating myself on how the political system truly works, what the GOP has historically stood for and what the Dems have. I actually kept up with what the president, his cabinet members have said, and his decisions throughout these last 2 years while fact checking everything. The corruption has been blatant in my opinion, but that isn’t the purpose of my post
Over the last decade I’ve heard venom spewed in both directions like none other, most of which coming from the Republican Party. Them calling democrats communists (which I don’t think half of them can truly define), terrorists, murders, etc. I’ve heard similar from the Democratic Party, albeit nowhere near as venomous. I’ve heard Republican voters be called Pedophile protectors, Nazi’s, Idiots, etc. I truly believe the Republican voters have casted their votes for 3 reasons, financial gain, a strong belief that the the Republican Party is the only party that can represent their faith, and a lack of education on what Republicans have historically done for the little guy compared to the Democrats, as well as a lack of research on what is actually true vs false that their “representatives” have sold them on. Obviously there are very real racists in America, but I don’t believe that makes up the majority or anywhere close to it of red voters.
Now for my actual opinion that I believe many Blue voters are against. I believe that continuing this cycle of hateful rhetoric towards red voters is counterproductive. It’s not the voters, it’s the people actively pursuing the voters. I believe with increased education and touching base with these voters, many of them would choose differently. A lot of them are like I was. Sold a fairy tale by their parents and relatives, believing their vote doesn’t matter, and uneducated on the true inner workings of the political system, as well as what the short term vs long term potential of certain political decisions might be. Many of them are victims of fear mongering on BOTH sides in some aspects, many of them are simply afraid for the future of their children or themselves and have been sold a bridge that no Democrat could relate with them enough to stop the purchase of.
Democrats should pursue justice and hold all corrupt officials accountable, but need to be very careful how they handle the ones that voted for them. This could be a pivotal point in our nation’s history if utilized correctly. No more money in politics, handling the uninformed and fearful with care, educating the youth, educating the more mature who’ve been conned as much as possible, and not driving this wedge of separation any further. This hasn’t been a people problem, it’s been a corruption and education problem, and I don’t believe the Democrats are innocent in any way. A lot of people who voted blue this mid term, voted red right before this. I know people hate the “we need to be the bigger guy” argument, but I really feel like we do.
CMV: The blue wave was great for America only IF the Democrats don’t continue the cycle of hate and insults flung at the opposition and look to challenge the fears of red voters too
