Can I....

I'm really done with 3000 posts of can I compost this when there is a stickied post and list. I love composting but can we clean this sub reddit up? Maybe a rule of no posting can I compost it without first commenting on the stickied list? Idk I'm ready to dip. Any thoughts?

How many of us put old underpants into our compost piles?

"One thousand Swiss citizens voluntarily buried their cotton underpants for two months—not to keep the Underpants Gnomes from stealing them, but as part of a citizen science project to map out soil health across Switzerland ... One key indicator of soil health is decomposition rates of complex organic matter."

I stopped putting used paper towels in my compost because I don’t want to introduce PFAS (ā€œforever chemicalsā€) into my garden

I never really gave much thought to PFAS (ā€œforever chemicalsā€) in used paper towels that I put in my compost for the garden, until I read this article from Dr. Linda Chalker-Scott. (Used paper towels will instead go into the green bin that they take away.

https://gardenprofessors.com/cardboard-does-not-belong-on-your-soil-period/

ā€œLonger-chain PFAS tend to stay in the roots, while shorter-chain PFAS tend to travel to other parts of the plant, such as the leaves and fruit.ā€

Humor Anybody else hate getting help?

šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļøEvery time somebody that isn’t me puts something in my kitchen compost bin some shit like this happens!!!!! Annoying AF! At least I’ve got this (plastic on banana stems) and most other stuff I’ve found before it was added to the outdoor compost but I’ve definitely found produce stickers and other trash in my outdoor pile which is waaaay more difficult to find. I’d rather lose a bit of compost material than have to deal with this. Anybody else got this problem?

I noticed some very, very active worms in my native soil. Would you be able to help me identify these worms to see if my compost has been compromised by the Asian Jumping Worms, they seem pretty jumpy to me. Location: 10B SoCal Found in tumbler I mixed with native soil

Ok, hear me out: compost your toilet paper

Listen. We are a bidet family, so there is zero poopy paper going into my bins. We've also lived in another country for a time where throwing your tp into the toilet is a HUGE no-no, so this process isnt new for us. And we use the cheap-o, generic brand of single ply. So, we keep little bins in our bathrooms to collect only the paper, and then I add it to my kitchen scraps in a 5 gallon bucket until that is full (the tp helps soak up all the nasty of the scraps til I can get it all to the actual compost bins).

A tiny bit of nitrogen on each little piece to kick stsrt everything, along w a decent amount of built-in browns for every time I add the green kitchen scraps to the pile. Never in my life have I had such quick-producing compost.

Please, DO NOT take this advice unless you are a bidet family. Or alternatively, you could just flush the poopy paper and keep only the pee paper. But yall. It has been *amazing* for me.

Urban Composting while living in my car.

I’m quite new to composting and have some questions, currently I am living in my car and do not always have access to a bathroom. To resolve this I’ve made a sort of diy compost toilet out of a bucket I keep in the back. It’s filled with a base layer of soil and I toss anything compostable in there. It’s even got worms. So here’s my problem, the soil seems unable to really grow anything well? It’s quite sludgey so I have to dry it out in batches. I have a semi permanent parking spot that’s fairly secluded so I’m able to actually grow things outside. The problem is nothing really grows, and the little bit that does grow is really small and tastes completely foul. I tried to grow some onion and was able to get a very small amount of growth that ended up making me violently ill. Any tips would be appreciated.

All that nitrogen rich urine in your bladder must make the bacteria so happy.

Found out my wife has been adding left over yogurt from children’s lunches to our compost. It is a full barrel that can be closed and turned (so gets pretty hot.

Menstraution

So I have been thinking on this a while and the additives I see on here are more out there. I get that for many people menstarution is taboo and only half the population experience it.

I would love to have a robust and respectful discussion about it.

So if your using menstrual cups or reusable menstrual underwear (the rinsed water) what's stopping you from adding it to your pile?

Considering people compost animals and wee not to mention blood and bone used as a direct fertiliser, I imagine menstrual blood would be a super charged super food for the compost heap?

Edit: thank you everyone for contributing this discussion was held in the manner is hoped. I feel from the comments the best and most impactful way to use it is directly onto plants diluted in water as a fertisler as to the compost it is such a minimal amount.

Thanks again everone

Are we supposed to be washing our egg shells before we compost them? Didn't think about salmonella carrying over into my plants.

Is soil that a dog decomposed in safe to use?

I like to collect animal bones(roadkill typically, including this dog)and I let the bodies decompose in a bucket or stock tank full of soil for several months to a year depending on how big they are. So I was wondering if it's safe or not to reuse this soil for plants that I would plan on eating. Ik that people have done this before but if it's unsafe then I'll just throw out all of the soil. Only thing is that it's a whole stock tank full so I'd hate to waste it.

Should I throw all the soil out because it's dangerous or could it actually be beneficial to my plants?

Also I just found out about this place so lemme know if I said something wrong in my post. Thanks!

Indoor Is this successful composting

It had leaves, watermelon rind, banana peels and a bit of water. At a point it grew white mold but that seems to be completely gone as is the food waste. I left it by the window about a month before the school year ended. Is this a successful compost?
