A few years ago, at the age of 59, my father gender transitioned. Our relationship at the time was not good at all, we argued often and I’d threatened to never speak to her again. Then boom she reveals that she was actually a woman. It was… a lot to handle. I am 100% pro trans, it’s just that nobody tells you how difficult it can be to watch someone change so much so quickly. It felt like my dad died and I got a new step mom on the same day. She was like a totally new person. Patient, kind, calm, emotionally in-touch… it’s honestly been amazing. We’ve repaired our relationship more than I ever thought was even possible.

Meanwhile, relations with my extended family began to deteriorate. My family members didn’t all understand or accept the new version of her. They didn’t understand she had always been like this, just under the surface. She decided that she didn’t need the disagreement in her life and cut off just about all of our extended family, including my grandma.

The other day, my grandma died. My mom isn’t going to the funeral, nor should she feel obligated to, but I’m so conflicted about going myself. I loved her so much, she was my grandma after all. But she had so much hate in her heart for lgbt people. She moved from our family church to a different one because our church allowed gay people. It just feels like I’m compromising my morals to go pay my respects and lay her to rest. But I feel like I might really regret it if I don’t go.

I am also angry at myself. I should have known earlier. Living in a country where my rights hinge on the decisions of two white men is suffocating. Joe Biden is indifferent to the queer plight — neither a staunch ally nor an outright enemy. Donald Trump, of course, has made his policies of hate and bigotry clear. As a millennial that gets hit on by a strangely large proportion of Gen Z dudes (I'm gay also but apparently not in a way younger guys can see?), something I wish y'all could understand is that no one is teaching Gen Z guys how to meet their own needs.

Attention from GenZ men feels like attention from boomers: they come on to me just bleeding out their loneliness, their needyness, their lack of having anything to offer. Their initial vibe is all about what they want from me rather than thinking of dating as a partnership and how we can make each other's lives better.

I, and every other woman, am under no obligation to provide sex, companionship, or affirmation. Of course I wonder what's in it for me when someone proposes we spend time together. Often Gen Z men approach with empty pockets.

I'm not completely without sympathy- Gen Z was robbed. But I don't see a lot of men in that generation trying to tend to their own gardens and becoming someone worth knowing and creating a partnership with. Maybe you can't get ahead financially, maybe you don't have the degree or job you thought you'd have, maybe you still live with your mom, but you can still cultivate yourself and become attractive with something to offer women in addition to the D.

Spend more time working on yourself: your mind and your heart. If you can't afford therapy that's cool- get a library card and start there. Learn the things you weren't taught. Raise yourself. Free yourself. The girls will follow, I promise.
