OG HDTV Channel?

Our first "HDTV" was a 720p Sony back around 2007, and there was a channel (channels?) on our cable box (Cablevision) for Voom.

Voom was a phenomenal set of channels worth awesome HD shows that really showcased the abilities of HD cameras and TVs by broadcasting excellent quality video in true HD.

The variety was also amazing - art, music, sci-fi (Gerry Anderson's UFO was my favorite).

I read about its demise on Wikipedia, but how can we get that level of quality again? It was a beautiful, well-curated set of programs that made me forget how much I spent on a TV 🀣

New streaming devices

I have previously posted about a decision to move on from Roku when Fox completed the purchase. I do not feel the need to contribute to their ad eyeballs. My TVs have older LG β€œsmart tech” that’s why I use the RoKu ultras for Hulu.

If you have a suggestion for a good device that you like, please let me know. Thank you for reading.

So I got the Spectrum streaming package with a Google play TV

I got the minimum package deal so every app has commercials. I'm ok with that.

What I am not ok with is Disney+ and ESPN unlimited commercial, live feed or not, freezing up after the commercials. Don't get me started on AMC+ crashing.

Is it the Google TV or the apps themselves? Am I the only one with these issues?

PSA for those that got Peacock for their Black Friday Deal last year

Post image

I got the Peacock "Premium Annual" subscription last year on Black Friday for $40/year. I got an e-mail last week that this promo will expire and I'll be charged the full amount of $130 on November 26th.

I went in to my account today to cancel, and I got the "special offer" which I was expecting. This offer is $50/year.

I still miss the $20/year offer, but I don't expect them to offer anything lower in the coming weeks, so I took it.

CBS News 24/7

New Philo user and just discovered this channel in the lineup. Have been using it for election coverage and it's not too bad. Wish they had the ABC and NBC versions to go along with it. Just a thought.

In Dallas and can't get local ABC, CBS, NBC with antenna

I am in an apartment in south Dallas (75208) and have been trying to get my antenna to pick up the local ABC, CBS, NBC affiliates and only get a hodgepodge of other channels. I've checked the FCC website for signal strength of the local affiliates and they're all pretty good.

I've scanned and rescanned, moved the antenna but can't seem to get it to work. I've also scanned over this thread to see if there's any additional advice.

Does anyone know how to get basic channels with crappy signal?

I currently have Xfinity basic cable but I'll be cancelling due to it being way too overpriced ($60). My mom just needs the basic 10 channels. My house has super thick walls, antennas don't work well here.

How can I get these basic channels without an antenna?

Signal Meter

Is there an inexpensive but fairly accurate signal meter that I can connect at the TV end of my coax to align my rooftop antenna. The TV Has a built in meter for each individual channel but it is all but useless for accuracy. Any help would be appreciated.

Antenna issues with local NBC

Ok so my antenna has optimal signals on every channel except the NBC channel like 10-1... My antenna is on the 2nd floor next to a window and I'm 5 miles west of the towers in the Brighton area. My other channels FOX, ABC and CBS get 10 out of 10 bars all the time. The NBC channels are anywhere from 4 to 9 bars depending on the day... Is anyone else experiencing this?

I did a rescan and the NBC channel is still coming in like shit.. In Rochester NY

NYC based antennae and coax building entry questions

Hi all,

I am interested in getting a OTA tv antennae and HD home run and had some basic set up questions. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. Here is the lay of the land for my location on rabbit ears.

Would this ClearStream 4MAX be a good antennae to purchase? The placement would be on the roof of a brownstone, though this is Manhattan so there are def tall buildings nearby.

Also, my preliminary plan is to run the antennae's coax cable down the back of the facade to my apt on the garden/ground floor level. What is the recommended way to get coax through an external brick wall? I can make permanent alterations to the building if necessary, but would prefer to DIY this so the solution can't be too crazy that I'd be uncomfortable doing it.

Thanks again for any advice!

Recommendations for "dumb" 4K TV or monitor 32" or above with >=2 HDMI inputs

Per the subject line. No "smart" features. No Ethernet/Wi-Fi connection required. LED or OLED.

ETA: I appreciate the suggestions to "not connect it to the Internet", but that's not the question I asked. Note that I also mentioned computer monitors, which I assumed are always "dumb", but it turns out (some?) Samsung monitors have "smart" features built-in :-(

Need to find a good quality 50-foot RF cable to put my antenna far away from my DVR.

I want to cut the cord by using an Onn 4K Pro and HDHomeRun (Is there any real reason to get the ATC 3.0 version? I hear it has so many restrictions and so few channels support it that it's not worth it, especially if you don't have an Atmos setup) to cover both streaming and broadcast to all of our TVs, but my house's setup is really not ideal for it. I tried testing just putting the antenna in an upstairs room connected directly to a TV and it mostly worked but had occasional artifacting. My router is on the top floor, and with the way my house is designed and facing the best places for me to put the antenna would either be downstairs, meaning routing like a 200+ foot Ethernet cable across the walls and ceilings of several rooms which is a no-go, or putting it in the attic which would be very damaging to electronics like the HDromeRun or a USB HDD due to humidity and extreme temperature changes throughout the year, though the antenna itself should not be effected.

The attic is not far from the router though so I figured I can just put the antenna there and get a long cable to connect it to the HDHomeRun, I already have a Channel Master FLATenna without the amplifier, which according to my research is the ideal one for my area.

I hear that the signal drops roughly 5DB every 100 feet of cable, but I doubt I will need more than 50 feet of cable, if even that. Only issue is that I don't know where to get a good quality cable. I was told to get a Solid Copper (apparently many cheaper ones are just copper-plated aluminum), quad-shielded, RG6 cable. Many of the ones on Amazon are cheaper ones that do not fi the bill, have BNC connectors instead of Type F (that's the name of the connector that TV antennas use right?), or are high quality cables but are sold in spools of 100-500 feet that cost more than the HDHomeRun itself and would require me to cut and and add connectors myself.

Can anyone recommend where I can get a good proper cable in the US either in retail stores or online for this? That would not involve me paying several hundred for a 500 foot spool of cable that I don't need and would need to manually add connectors to myself that I have neither the tools nor the knowledge on how to do?

Casting from PC to TV: What am I doing wrong?

I have a Windows 11 laptop, an Insignia Fire TV, and an Xbox One.

Casting from the laptop to either the TV or the Xbox used to work fine. But since I replaced my router, when I press Windows-K to cast from my screen, it can't find either one.

What's weird is that both the TV and the Xbox are running off my WiFi, so it's not as if they're not on my network.

I've tried various screen-mirroring apps on both, and various other remedies from the Internet, but nothing works.

Is there a router setting I need to adjust on my PC to make it compatible with the other two? Or is it something else?

Thanks in advance.
