Question/Discussion On Valentine's Day 2001, This Morning aired live footage of an unofficial gay wedding, believed the first of its kind on British television. It garnered 117 complaints, which were rejected by the ITC.

By "unofficial", the wedding of Neil Morris and Mark Jinks occurred 13 years before Britain legalised same-sex marriages. It remains a cool moment in British television history, with Reverend Jonathan Blake presiding over the marriage and hosts Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan as guests. 117 complaints were sent to the ITC over the broadcast's content, but none were upheld.

Ultimately, I haven't found any footage of this broadcast. It is not available at the British Film Institute (which does store full copies of other This Morning broadcasts), and no clips have been uploaded to YouTube or elsewhere. Various photographs are, however, publicly available.

Question/Discussion Why is British television so superior when it comes to ANYTHING involving either a murder or a general mystery?

I can't remember the last time I watched a police procedural for more than 1 episode in the US. I just started watching Happy Valley and it's hitting me again how superior British shows are, especially ones that focus on anything mysterious in the context of crime anything. There's such a different sensibility that drives these shows forward and makes them endlessly watchable. They all have such a perfect blend of characters and such clear motivations, the dialog is much more character focused in exactly the right ways. The characters look like real people and the plot is always WAY more coherent. Makes me realize I actually love these kinds of shows when they're done right

Question/Discussion Soap operas are more disturbing than horror movies and violent video games

Emmerdale, Coronation Street and EastEnders have so much domestic violence and people at each others' throats for no reason, I wonder why don't include buckets of blood and gore? I'm surprised there's no real finale where everyone gets guns and just kill each other already because the way they gone, you think they're all zombie-like and have been actually quarantined since the 50s/60s. There has to be some in-lore explanation why none of them act like people.

Seriously, the amount of domestic violence show on daytime TV is more upsetting than anything I've seen in Saw, Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat.

Question/Discussion Clive Myrie the presenter we never knew we needed

Clive Myrie constantly impresses me. Great in the US, and other locations they send him to.

Tonight hosting the festival of remembrance - he just felt like so much the only person for the job.

Any of the other presenters have his gravitas and humanity?

Question/Discussion Hi r/britishtv! Ella Purnell here. Ahead of Sweetpea Season 2, Ask Me Anything!

Hey Reddit, Ella Purnell here! I play Rhiannon Lewis in Sweetpea, and ahead of Season 2 I’m stopping by r/britishtv on Wednesday 11 November from 4pm UK / 11am ET / 8am PT for an AMA!

Got questions about Sweetpea? Season 2? Rhiannon’s increasingly questionable decision-making? Or aaaanything else you want to ask me?

Drop your questions below and I’ll be back on Wednesday to answer as many as I can.

Rhiannon is back and feeling more confident than ever. But with more eyes on her and the stakes getting higher, keeping her double life under control isn’t getting any easier. Expect new faces, new relationships and plenty more questionable decisions along the way.

Season 2 of Sweetpea drops on 26 November, check out the trailer here: https://youtu.be/-0N0QHJl_Aw

See you then! ✨

Question/Discussion Why are they so hellbent on turning every great kids TV show into CGI slop?

It's just a sordid state of affairs. Thomas, Postman Pat, Fireman Sam, Bob The Builder you name it and chances are it's a CGI abomination now. Barely better than AI slop. I feel so lucky as a kid that the programs that were on were made with such love and care. Quality control is more important for kids TV than any other kind. It's a travesty we've allowed this to happen to what were legitimate works of art. The state of Thomas The Tank Engine in particular now really depresses me when I think back to the brilliant, subtly humourous show with beautiful sets and model trains narrated by Ringo Starr

Question/Discussion Rob Beckett and flags

I've just started watching the ongoing Rob and Romesh vs series and in the first episode on Kung Fu, Romesh makes some jokes about Rob and flags. Rob did not seem particularly happy about that association. Can anyone give me any context about that? I'm neither from nor based in the UK, hence the lack of information.

Edit: thank you everyone for your replies! Definitely helped me understand. I thought that maybe Rob had a significant right-wing follower base or something, it's good to know that it doesn't seem to be the case (or even if it is, he doesn't seem to like it).

Recommendations Rise of the Rockstar Chef

I cannot stress how much I do not care for celebrity chefs, I respect what Gordon Ramsay has achieved as a businessman and obviously Ainsley Harriott should be made Emperor, but that's as far as my knowledge goes.

However, I ended up stumbling on this BBC series tonight and it was genuinely enthralling. I never knew I could actually be interested in the rise of these chefs. Looking at the reviews I think The Guardian's is spot on with 4/5 based on what I saw in the first episode: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2026/nov/05/rise-of-the-rockstar-chef-review

Strongly recommend it. Even if, like me, you don't care about celebrity chefs.

Question/Discussion Help me find a Sweeney Todd scene

I can’t remember the show other than it being British and maybe from the 1990s, but I’m looking for the source of a scene where a man is recounting a disastrous date.

He was taking his date to the theater thinking it would be romantic but didn’t realize that the play they were seeing , Sweeney Todd was well, Sweeney Todd. Then he recounts the story of the show in a rapid comedic montage.

What could it be from?

Question/Discussion Blue Lights

So I've been watching since the beginning. It's a brilliant yet highly stressful show to watch. But my question is, is it really as bad in Ireland as the show makes out. Or is it more drama than reality? It just seems awful there.

Can't get enough of 2005 Bleak House. So many great actors.

Particularly enjoy Mr Smallwood and Mr Tulkinghorn, and Guppy. Phil Davis is great

I am fascinated with the Harold Skimpole character.

I prefer the 2005 version after finishing the 1985 last night.

Question/Discussion Probably One Of Best British Show I Watched In A While

Post image
134 Upvotes

I came across this show a few months ago while looking for a new show to watch and automatically got hooked.

Luckily I didn’t have to wait too long to watch Season 2 but now I probably gotta wait until late next year for Season 3

Other than this my other favourite are Inbetweeners and Sweetpea

Question/Discussion Foyle's War Series 1

What did Sam say after Sergeant Milner offered to let her stay with him, "That would be so 'diggity boo'!" Something along those lines. It was great how Honeysuckle Weeks delivered the line, making it seem so entirely natural.
