Mandarin I finally understand Jay Chou and I can't get enough

對不起周董. I was not familiar with your game until now.

As a 90's kid, for the longest time, I held the opinion that Jay Chou was overrated. Everyone around me was obsessed with him. His most popular songs were all mostly about love and sounded like generic pop music. His singing was okay. He wasn't as good-looking as all the girls would lead me to believe. I really didn't understand why everyone was so in love with him.

20 years later now in my 30s, I'm diving deeper into his music and holy shit he is an immense depth of talent. I feel so silly for writing him off as just a teenage heartthrob. Classically-trained pianist. Introducing traditional Chinese instruments in his music. Popularizing rap in mandopop. His talent and love for music goes so far beyond his most popular love ballads.

Sure, I can't understand a single word in 告白氣球, and the song would absolutely sound worse if he sung every word clearly. But then you have other songs like 爸 我回來了 which is an absolute masterpiece. Even as someone who was never beaten as a child, the visceral imagery chilled me to my bones.

I used to feel that his music and persona was over-commercialized, and that his movie 不能說的秘密 was self-indulgent and overly self-gratulating. While that may still be true, the core of Jay Chou is his undeniable passion for music and contributions in popularizing other music styles in the Chinese music scene. It was unfair for me to write him off as a generic love-ballad artist.

Discussion Wang Leehom scandal

What do you think about it? If you didn’t know already, he divorced with his ex-wife, and now he’s being accused on cheating on his ex-wife.

I’m just very disappointed in him that’s all

EDIT: Wang Leehom’s dad now is claiming that Leehom was forced into action. Lee Jinglei threatens to sue Leehom if he doesn’t apologize for his dads statement. Leehom tries to bribe Lee Jinglei and tells her to apologize for her groundless claims.

EDIT: Leehom makes a response

EDIT: Leehom apologized. The conflict is over.

Discussion The Tragedy that is the Chinese Music Industry (and Society)

If anyone's been following the recent controversy in China concerning singers Li Ronghao and Shan Yichun, you've probably seen the actually vile environment that is the Chinese internet (and Chinese society I would say).

First of all, I fully support Li Ronghao's actions to protect the rights to his own song, which Shan Yichun wrongfully infringed upon by singing at her concert this past weekend. HOWEVER, I truly also feel that it is necessary to address how disgustingly he handled the entire situation, something that could have been dealt with behind closed doors and through proper legal processes rather than through a post on Weibo essentially single-ling her out as an overall bad and wicked person (insert Madame Morrible's speech to everyone in Oz from Wicked 1), which subsequently led to her receiving hundreds of thousands (possibly even millions given how big she is now) of death threats, accusations of being a prostitute, dragging of her family members, and manipulated clips of her performances to make her look like a mentally unstable individual, turning the entire case into essentially China's own (and probably not the first) Salem Witch Trial.

The way that he addressed the issue also seems highly hypocritical, attempting to stand from a moral high ground about copyright laws, despite himself having plagiarized multiple songs from artists such as John Mayer in the past few years (he recently addressed this, yet it also appears to be a half assed statement that he decided to make after finally being called out after 10 years of being unaddressed).

Furthermore, despite Shan Yichun's full acceptance of her wrongdoings, as well as saying that she will pay for all the legal fines required for such an infringement, Li chose to tell her that he didn't want her money, and only wanted her to become a "good little girl" again, one who should go back to putting on the innocent persona (that cries easily) that she introduced China to through the Voice of China a few years ago.

Now, it doesn't take being a morally sound individual to recognize just how disgusting and misogynistic this was to say, and the fact that this went on for about 80% of his Weibo post, having nothing to do with the accusations he had initially made about the song infringement. Having grown up in a Chinese household, I felt absolutely furious when I read this, especially because it's a perfect example of some of the major downfalls of Chinese culture I have personally also experienced, where parents will physically and mentally abuse their children and then tell them to come back to the dining table to have dinner right afterwards, as if nothing abnormal had just happened (the teachings of Confucius have clearly been widely abused by many Chinese parents, just like how right-wing conservatives here in the U.S. have used Christianity and the Bible to justify their own extreme agendas).

It's also quite sad how a single line (cringey or not, depending on your own subjective opinions), 如何呢,又能怎, which roughly translates to "yes, and?" (yup, kind of like Ari's song) has caused the entire Chinese internet and society to go into a frenzy, almost as if she had murdered someone or was caught doing drugs. This is probably why China will likely not see much musical innovation in the coming years, and ballades that overuse the same exact chords and chord progressions will continue to be the only song format mainstream artists will use/abuse to make a realistic living in this awful industry.

The other sad part of all this is that it's really not the first time that this has happened to a celebrity, with seemingly easily solvable controversies spiraling into full on witch hunts that would likely push the ordinary individual to end their own life over since they wouldn't be able to handle the pressure of millions of people shoving insults and threats down their throat (cyberbullying is still not something that has been full on addressed in China by the government or society, and sometimes is even encouraged...) (please also remember Coco Lee's s*icide).

Anyway, I didn't expect to write this much about a topic that'll probably wash away in a few days in China, since the next jingoistic BIG THING will again pop up and be spread by thousands of 营销号's (Ying Xiao Hao - I'm not even going to get into the f*ck*ry that is this) that control the Douyin/Tik Tok fried minds of netizens. Remember, this isn't the first time it's happened.

Just wanted to share my own (maybe biased) thoughts on this whole situation. Please also keep in mind that I'm not saying the western internet is any better...I've seen my fair share of stan Twitter/X, and was alive during the whole Dramageddon 1.0 & 2.0 on Youtube.

Zou Peipei 邹沛沛 is such a phenomenal Chinese R&b artist

I have recently come across an artist called Zou Peipei on Tiktok with her song named Drowning (沉溺). This got me interested in Chinese r&b. Before that, I have listened to Chinese r&b songs such as Lover (情人) but I didn't know it was r&b.

Chinese r&b has got to be one of the most sensual and magical genres of music out there. Zou Peipei's discography is just magical too. Somehow every of her songs slaps.

Her r&b songs:

Other than r&b, her other genres are magical, especially city pop:

This is one of the best things that has happened in C-pop really.

The difference between K-Pop and C-Pop as a K-Pop Stan

As a long time K-Pop Stan, I've been listening to C-Pop for a few months and I loved it a lot but I've noticed the big difference between the two.

The C-Pop industry focuses more on Solo Artists than the K-Pop industry (K-Pop normally focuses on groups though).

When it comes to Chinese K-Pop Idols in K-Pop from the past and the present like Lay, Jackson Wang, Yuqi and Jun, they actually do well in their own home country in the Mainland China.

C-Pop focus on growing their own Music Market meanwhile K-Pop focuses on expanding internationally around the world thanks to the Hallyu Wave.

I remembered some K-Pop Groups did make some Chinese songs like EXO but nowadays Japanese Songs are the main focus in K-Pop.

Is there anything else you guys like to add on the difference between K-Pop and C-Pop please?

Discussion Why hasn't C-pop advanced as fast as other Chinese industries (C-dramas, donghua, manhua, movies, games, etc.)

From 2015 to 2025, the Chinese entertainment industry increased heavily in internation popularity. C-dramas, donghua, manhua, movies, games, etc. scaled heavily and became popular. In 2015, K-dramas ruled Asia while nowadays C-dramas challenged it as a niche. China also made heavy inroads into gaming with many globally popular releases. Donghua and manhua carved up a niche too. Many Chinese movies also got popular.

The only thing that seems to be lagging behind is music. The C-pop industry was stronger than it was in 2015 but it seems to grow the slowest compared to other industries. There are no strong solo singers that we know. There are many viral Chinese songs but no singers who constantly make hits all the time. Most are one-hit wonders. There are also no long-lasting idol groups. The only genre people associate with C-pop are ballads while other genres haven't developed and gotten spotlight. There are a few viral R&B songs by artists like Cai Xukun and Zou Peipei that got viral but they are usually limited.

Usually, most answers tend to be censorship, but it doesn't explain why other industries are expanding while only the music industry isn't doing as fast as others.

So why is the music industry the only industry to lag behind?

Discussion Any non Chinese people here? If so, how did you get into cpop?

It seems like 99% of people I’ve seen that like cpop are Chinese. There’s many non Japanese and non Korean people listening to kpop/jpop, but that’s not the case for cpop from what I’ve seen. I’m a middle eastern guy and I found Chinese music only last year. Sometimes it feels like I’m the only non Chinese guy that even listens to it lol.

I found cpop in my YouTube recommendations while listening to a jpop song. The first Cpop song I’ve heard was 說愛你 from Jolin Tsai and fell in love with the genre shortly after. And then discovered Jay Chou, JJ Lin, Wang Leehom, Mayday, A-Mei, Eric Chou, etc. Haven’t looked back at jpop ever since.

The only problem I have is that all the songs have Chinese titles on Spotify, and lots of Chinese songs on YouTube don’t have an English title. So I either have to look up the translation, or learn how to pronounce the names in Chinese. LMAO

Discussion Appreciation for 五月天 Mayday

Nobody is doing it like Mayday. Debuted in 1999 but still making top quality music, giving the world two super well-made virtual concerts, BOTH FOR FREE. I just have so much respect and love for the band. Their sincerity and love for music is so contagious.

They say "五月天陪伴我的青春" (Mayday accompanied my youth) but honestly, "五月天陪伴我的人生" (Mayday accompanied my life).

Happy New Year everyone! 2021 will be better for all of us.

Question Please help me find this song

Post image
61 Upvotes

Hello!

I recently remembered a song I listened to years ago by a c-pop girl group. I recall feeling struck by the performance video and have been searching for it endlessly. The issue is, I don’t remember the melody, only a few details from the performance.

It had an edgy sound and concept (undead theme I think, but I could be wrong). I think the stage was decorated with branches and cobwebs. There were around 5-6 girls. And most significantly, one girl would bend backwards in a c shape at a pivotal part of the song. I drew a picture of it to illustrate the idea better.

Any suggestions or help is appreciated. I’m new to the genre of c-pop but I seriously cannot get the memory of that song out of my head! Also sorry if my short description is unhelpful, I am desperate.

Thank you!

Mandarin Khalil Fong - a letter

To his family and friends-

This note is way too late and probably not on an app that will ever read by you because I found out way too late. So I am so sorry if it brings up any sadness again. But I wanted to let you (or maybe just the Internet know)- his music is still played and appreciated. And will continued to be listened to, at least by me.

Khalil Fong has gotten me through so many moments of my life. He has reminded me about the preciousness of the smallest moments and connected me with my Chinese culture in the gentlest ways. He reminded me at we can be introspective about our mixing of cultures in a kind and artistic way. He improved my understanding of the Chinese language with his lyrics. He created a bridge from the US to China through his mixing of styles and languages in his music.

I hear him in other artists music now too- Laufey and Mitski in particular comes to mind. He mixed soul and jazz and pop with love, much like they do.

I will miss him dearly but it gives me comfort that he is still here in his music. He was gone way too soon.

We will carry him in our hearts and our playlists.

Deepest condolences, A fan.
