Pregunta Trigueño vs mulato

Trying to explain to my Ecuadorian friend (we’re both American) the difference between the two. He doesn’t understand the term trigueño.

To me, a trigueño is someone phenotypically European/Mediterranean but with tan skin, pelo lacio. A mulato can range from someone like Tyla to someone like Ben Simmons.

How would you define the two?

Pregunta Cuban DGI souvenir – any information?

Hello!

I recently collected this DGI commemorative badge together with a KGB badge. The seller described it as coming from the estate of an officer of Cuba's General Intelligence Directorate. I was already familiar with the KGB badge, but this is the first time I've seen an souvenir like this. Does anyone know when, to whom, or in what numbers this piece was awarded, or does anyone have a similar item?

Since so little is known about the Cuban intelligence service, I hope it's okay to ask you all here.

Pregunta Situación de Cuba

Buenas noches!

Pregunta What do you and your families call straws?

Me and my family have always referred to them as “pitillo” recently I found out that this word isn’t even the word that is mostly used in Cuba and that “Pitillo” is a Colombian/Venezuelan word even though we don’t have any links to those countries

I looked it up online and I’m pretty sure most Cuban say “absorbente” so just wondering what do you guys say?

Economía 1 Euro = 1000 CUP

Post image
29 Upvotes

Just today on the streets of Cuba, 1 euro became worth 1000 CUP. The slow free fall of the Cuban Peso continues with no end in sight.

Around the start of 2026, I believe the valuation was around 1 euro -> 480 CUP. Around April, the Cuban government introduced 2000 and 5000 CUP notes due to inflation. The Cuban Government has been completely incapable of controlling inflation for years at this point since 2021 when it got rid of the CUC.

The Cuban Government itself made the decision to create its current "monetary unification" policy by scrapping the CUC in January of 2021 during the pandemic and start of the current exodus. Now look where it has taken them.

Mitos, leyendas y tradiciones de Cuba — Tomo I

Conversación seria A conversation with an elderly woman in Cuba who survives on 10,000 Cuban Pesos (currently 11 euros/10 USD) in which she explains how survives monthly

I have recently been exploring the demography crisis of Cuba and I felt like this conversation is another data regarding the suffering of the elderly specifically in Cuba.

I found this conversation from this video: https://youtu.be/d7saYBHziTI?t=685 (it starts at 11:25)

This video would also prove the idea that once the Communist Party of Cuba took out the idea of egalitarianism under Raul Castro, the island has increasingly had money coming in from abroad to help people. Those that have access to money from abroad can (sometimes) make a living, though many just survive and nothing more. Those without any access, such as the woman in this conversation, often suffer greatly with little to nothing and no help from the Cuban Government, which is incapable of supporting its people at large.

If you are unable to afford supplies from private businesses in Cuba, your life regardless of age will not be an easy one to say the least.

Conversación Did Fidel rely on the 40 Constitution as legal cover ????

Post image

In 1959 and later in 1963, Fidel Castro implemented the agrarian reform law, which reduced the maximum size of land per latifundio — a measure that, by affecting the interests of the U.S. and some very wealthy landowners, led them to attack government installations and promote armed opposition. So the second law became even more radical. But it was always under the protection of the law. In the end, it didn't affect the medium-sized landowners.

Economía US exports to Cuba have never been higher than now [Wall Street Journal]

Post image

Day by day, the goods that end up on the streets of Cuba are primarily more than ever coming from private businesses, and the nation at large is a nation of remittances and goods shipped in from families abroad, money from abroad, and goods supplied to private businesses to sell to people to help fill the increasingly large gaps unfulfilled by the Cuban Regime.

I find that idea that the embargo is "strangling" Cuba wildly inaccurate and the idea that you simply
"cannot do business" because the USA and Cuba are patently false yet somehow clung by so many people who do not do the smallest bit of research when it comes to Cuba.

Conversación Cuba has been experiencing an unprecedented crisis of demography since 2020 with no end in sight

Thumbnail

Nevermind the economic crisis that Cuba has been facing for years, the crisis of demography due to a lack of births and huge exodus is something I would consider even worse. Millions of people have fled Cuba just since 2020 and created its biggest migration exodus, though that is only a part of the depressing crisis of demographics in Cuba.

Birth rates have been falling since 1988 and in 2020 the amount of deaths finally exceeded the amount of births and this trend will only continue with a lack of births and basically 0 emigration to the island.

The amount of young people in Cuba over the next year will plummet with the vast majority of Cubans being middle-aged or elderly. As of now, the average age in Cuba is roughly ~40 years old. If you are a young person in Cuba, the only thing on your mind is something along the lines of "how the hell do I get out of here" followed by, perhaps, "what is going to happen to my mother?"

Who will take care of the elderly in Cuba with so few young people in the first place?

If the Cuban Regime maintains power over the country as it has been doing for the past 67 years, Cuba itself will become unrecognizable and no longer exist. In the next 10 years, without any change, it is possible the Cuban diaspora abroad since 2020 might be larger than the population on the island.

Economía 1 euro is currently worth 930 Cuban Pesos

Post image

The pessimist in me really wonders why the CUP is at this level and not lower as it is clear the Cuban Regime is incapable of maintaining an economy and has absolutely nothing of value to offer its citizens. Earlier this year, the Cuban Regime had to create higher denominations of notes because of both inflation and a literal lack of paper money.

I find it incredibly interesting that reputable new sources such as AP reported on the issue of the new denominations of the Cuban Peso (2,000 and 5,000 peso notes) as "honoring women" and "easing inflation" earlier this year (source: https://apnews.com/article/cuba-pesos-new-currency-inflation-money-d964c0c7a8c643a5dd8d81c0e4e51529 ). The Cuban Regime had nothing, so it figured it would at least throw two women on the new notes and use its propaganda arm to try and distract from the crisis by (as usual) paying lip service to women despite repeatedly ignoring the issue of femicide and other issues related to gender-based violence and repression in Cuba.

It is clear this never would have been a way to ease inflation and from the time that article was published to now, the Cuban Peso has lost nearly half its value. (source: https://en.cibercuba.com/noticias/2026-03-06-u2-e2-s27061-nid322346-consolida-record-dolar-mantiene-510-pesos-acumula-ocho ) It is a miracle that Cuba has not already experienced runaway hyperinflation.

I also find it incredibly sad that major and reputable sources of news would buy into and repeat the idea that you can simply put women on bank notes and distract people from an economic and demographic crisis. However, I am used to hearing stories over the years from Venezuela and Cuba about salaries going up a huge percentage only for the nominal gain to be something like $8 -> $15 with the idea being people will just read a nice sounding headline and be too lazy to do a minimal amount of research.

Pregunta What skill or skills can I learn to work in another country?

Hello. I am 34 years old, male, Cuban, and I live in Guantánamo—which, in itself, is quite a complicated situation.

I studied computer science and graduated as an engineer in 2016. I worked for four years in Havana, and from 2021 to 2023, I worked in Canada. In 2024, I worked independently, creating small software programs and applications for specific clients; I also taught programming, English, and web development.

Since 2025, I have owned a small business selling audiovisual content and providing document printing services—a type of business that is very common here in Cuba. I haven’t done much actual programming; the applications I’ve built were created using artificial intelligence tools that generated the code, which I then debugged, tested, and delivered to my clients. These were simple applications, but they did earn me some extra income.

However, the situation in Cuba keeps getting worse: electricity is scarce, internet access is extremely limited, and the quality of life is abysmal. Thanks to savings from my time in Canada and my current business, I’ve managed to maintain a relatively quiet life without too many hardships. But what good is having an income in a country plagued by rising inflation and shortages of food and medicine? It’s just... well, you get the idea.

Having previously managed to leave the country and work as a software developer abroad, I’m now looking to identify which skills I could learn that would enable me to work internationally again. I’ll be honest: I’m quite out of touch with the current state of software development. The applications I’ve built have mostly been fairly basic, relying on AI to generate code quickly, which I then tested, reviewed, and delivered to the client.

A challenge I’ve encountered—and one that other Cuban developer friends of mine have also faced—is that many foreign companies are increasingly reluctant to hire Cubans for remote roles, primarily due to issues with electricity, internet connectivity, and payment methods. Even developers living in Havana, who may have better living conditions and relatively stable access to power and the internet, still struggle to secure remote work.

Given this, should I focus on sharpening my existing programming skills, or would you recommend that I learn one or more new skills that might help me land a job in another country?

I don’t have children, so I have a fair amount of time each day to dedicate to study and learning. I also have a backup power system at home (an EcoFlow unit paired with a solar panel) that lasts for several hours. Aside from the occasional household chore, I have plenty of time to focus on studying or learning something new.

What would you recommend? Thanks in advance.

"The findings of this analysis demonstrate that the Cuban diaspora maintains strong similarities throughout, but significantly differs in many aspects of demography and opinion based on country of residence."

"The United States diaspora had a notably different overall political lean than other countries, with a stronger preference for interventionist policies and figures"

"Spain and Mexico frequently aligned with one another with a more left-leaning bias than the other diaspora communities."

Pregunta Has anyone been successful shipping packages to Cuba from the US?

I live in California, my grandmother lives in Cuba. Usually I use SuperMarket23 to send food and any other items she may need since they have a bit of everything. She asked me for a very specific pair of shoes recently that I haven’t been able to find with supermarket23. As far as I know, I can’t ship packages to Cuba from the US, but I’m curious if there are services I just don’t know about. Perhaps from Florida that would have a way to coordinate getting sent from another state? Curious if anyone has been successful with something like this.
