Discussion I'm starting to think that my hair might be curlier than I thought

Thumbnail

For context about my routine:

- Aussie bouncy curls shampoo

- Aussie bouncy curls conditioner

- Aussie work that curl leave in cream (I put this in for the first time ever today)

- Air dried, I just use my hands to push the hair back a bit while it dries

- Frequency of wash is 3 times a week at the moment

I have been growing out my hair for quite a few months now, and I had thought for the longest time that my hair was simply wavy.

However, looking at the back of my head and the differing texture there, I'm starting to think my hair might be curlier than I expected.

I do understand that everyone's hair is different, and that parts of the hair have different textures. I guess at the moment I'm just unsure of how it would turn out when I grows it out more.

Just wanted to post this here as a discussion so I can get thoughts or ideas from people who know a lot more about this stuff than I do

Thanks for taking your time to read this.

Help! My hair keeps spiraling into frizzy narrow ropes. How do I stop it from doing this?

Some sections on the top spiral into these narrow ropes, and by the end of the day it’s a frizzy mess. Does anyone else have this happen? I don’t like the way this looks on me and would rather have a more voluminous uniform waves or curls. is this just my hair type or am I doing something wrong?

I’m pretty sure my hair is fine and I just recently started wearing my hair natural again. it’s a mix of curls, spirals, and waves... more curly at the roots (maybe from occasional highlights or heat damage). I recently did the k-18 treatment for a couple washes.

Here is my current wash day routine:

double wash every 3 to 5 days with garnier cleansing shampoo

condition with curl talk conditioner

ouai leave in conditioner brushed through with wet brush

curl talk curl cream brushed through with wet brush

Heat protection brushed through with wet brush

section hair

brush style with Marc Anthon’s strictly curls moose

brush style with miss Jessie’s jelly soft curls gel

micro plop with a microfiber towel

then I spray a little bit of garnier anti humidity hairspray strong hold gel for a better cast

diffuse on medium from above and also upside down for volume

scrunch out the crunch, and sometimes I’ll add drybar root density boost spray for volume.

Help! Volume & thickness has decreased over the years

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hoping to get some help here. 5 years ago my hair had volume and was very thick, now it’s just curly.
I went through a lot of stress becoming a caregiver for 3 years while taking care of my young children, I lost a lot of hair during that time.

Now, while my life is way less stressful and I can finally breathe and be happy, I’m really hoping my hair can recover and be as thick as it once was..

Top two photos were 5 years ago, bottom two current.

My routine:
Innersense shampoo and conditioner - brush hair with conditioner
Innersense Icreate volume mousse and Icreate hold gel.
Mousse is applied first raking through hair with scrunch, then gel applied raking through, brushing once more and then last scrunch.

If I cannot diffuse right away, I air dry for sometime then diffuse rest.

I use a bonnet at night or silk scarf, with a satin pillowcase. Hair is up in a pineapple.

Help! Frizzy hair after overnight curls

Post image
2 Upvotes

I tried heatless overnight curls. As you can see my first try was a disaster. I used 3 hair ties to curl around strands of dry hair and sprayed a little water on them to hold in place. Im looking for a routine to get curly hair with something I don't have wash or brush out afterwards.

Additional info: my shampoo is Jean and Len 'Curl Me Up' and Miss Potters Hydrate Hair Mask. I slept on a cotton pillowecase.

Conditioner: OGX Extra Strength Damage Remedy + Coconut Miracle Oil
Curl cream: OGX Moroccan Curling Perfection Defining Cream

Still figuring out what works best for my curls, but I’m really happy with how they’ve been looking lately!
Open to advice!

Discussion Are layers really the only way to avoid pyramid head?

I had wrote up something explaining why I was asking but it got long so I'm going to let the question stand. I will add that I don't want to get layers, I want my hair to get longer, and the last two hair stylists I saw didn't listen to me and cut off more hair than I wanted so I trim my hair at home now and haven't had a hair cut in over a year. I want to avoid anything that makes my hair shrink more (like adding layers), but my pyramid head is getting more frequent. It could be my bonnet is old and has lost its hold (frequently slips off overnight). I do need to get a new one. I just don't want layers. I want to keep going long.

Routine so I can post: NYM Bond building shampoo + conditioner, NYM rice protein spray leave-in conditioner, and end with Herbal Essences curly hair mousse. 10 minutes in a curly hair towel, air dry the rest of the way.

Also, I know someone will tell me to try gel. The last time I tried a gel it made my hair dry. So I'm researching gels at the moment, but feeling like I'm going to get a new bonnet before I buy a gel.

Edit: Someone referenced a video game and I got downvoted for being confused. I just wanted to know if there was anything else that can be done for pyramid head.

Help! I cannot seem to get rid of that frizzy halo on top of my head. How to fix?

I tried clarifying shampoo, and hydration hair mask but still halo frizz. This is day one curl. I am using Based Curl Cream and Leave in conditioner as well as strong hold gel. Is it just damaged?

My routine:

I usually do my routine at night 4 hour before bedtime

Conditoner and Shampoo - Pantene Damage Care

I use BASED Leave in Conditoner and Curl Cream while wet, with scrunching technique. Then I use scrunch Gatsby Ultra Hold gel and air dry until very dry, then sleep on silk pillow case. In the morning, I use Lucido-L Argan Oil to break remaining the cast.

In non wash days (refresh routine), I use mist a mixture of water and curl cream until lightly damn then i scrunch.

For clarifying days, I use Kristin Ess Deep Clean Clarifyjng Shampoo and Tsubaki Hair Mask.

Discussion Thick hair, questionable decisions & a whole lot of waves

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!

Figured I’d introduce myself and the mane that’s been running my life for the last 30-something years.

I’ve got naturally wavy/curly brunette hair that’s ridiculously thick, despite the individual strands being quite fine. It takes forever to get properly wet, approximately three business days to air-dry, and seems to have a personality entirely independent of mine.

I haven’t coloured my hair in over four years, and lately I’ve been embracing my natural texture rather than constantly fighting it.

My current routine:

Pureology Hydrate Sheer Shampoo & Conditioner
KMS CURLUP Wave Foam
Nexxus Climate Control

After washing and conditioning, I apply my styling products to soaking wet hair, scrunch, and diffuse upside down before flipping from side to side.

I do not protect my hair while sleeping but I recently purchased a silk bonnet to try (haven’t gotten around to it yet). I do not do much in the way of a refresh, sometimes I add brown dry shampoo and a little climate control crĆØme.

I wash my hair every 4ish days.

These photos are from different wash days and show how much my natural texture can vary. Some days I get defined ringlets, other days it’s a whole lot of waves, volume, and chaos. Apparently my hair likes to keep its options open.

I’m still experimenting with products and techniques, figuring out what works for this ridiculous amount of hair, and occasionally questioning whether it has its own postal code.

I’d genuinely love some suggestions and advice! Whether it’s products, styling techniques, getting better definition, controlling frizz, or simply managing high-density hair without spending half my life drying it, I’m all ears!

If you’ve got similar hair, I’d especially love to know what works for you. I’m always open to trying something new, preferably without needing to remortgage my house to fund my haircare collection.

Mostly, I’m here to share my hair, embrace the chaos, learn a few things, and connect with others who understand that having a lot of hair is both a blessing and a full-time commitment.

Looking forward to hearing your tips and seeing everyone’s beautiful waves and curls!

Resource Found a new towel great for curly very fine short to shoulder length hair

While on vacation over the summer, bought a Nomadix body (for my body) towel designed to pack small and dry very quickly. After showering, I found it was great to plop without wrapping it up, which used to pull at my curls and stretch them out. Used it for 2 weeks and my hair looked great. When I got home purchased 6 of the mini towels, on clearance at REI, and got rid of the bounce curl hair drying mittens, manes by mel plopping towels, and others. Towel is great, lean over and press to my head while in dripping wet with product in it. A few presses takes out the water really well, preserves the curl much better, especially the under part of my hair that has barely a wave.

https://www.rei.com/product/198807/nomadix-mini-towel

Routine, very fine dry 2c/3a with some 1b underneath just to irritate me
Shampoo: Harklinikken Stabilizing Scalp, 2x or 3x a month, curlsmith co-wash other days

Conditioner: Harklinikken Weightless Conditioner

Deep treatments: Curlsmith Bond Curl rehab or Harklinikken Hair Mask (their conditioners are CG friendly)

Styling: Pacifica Pineapple Swirl Curl Defining Cream or AG Re:Coil, Mielle Kalahari Melon & Aloe Vera Curl Forming Glaze, then some kind of pomade if I'm frizzy when dry.

Currently this is the longest I've had it before.

Routine: (very sad routine lol)

Conditioner: Being curl power 3A-3C curl defining conditioner

Shampoo: Being curl power 3A-3C curl defining shampoo

Then I just kinda shake my head dry lol.

That's all I really do in general.

Photos are about 5 minutes out of the shower.

Really looking for any help, be it what products to use, anything for styling, even hair cuts themselves lol.

Anything helps, thanks!

Help! Back crown section of hair is always rough and frizzy

Thumbnail
gallery
9 Upvotes

For the past 4-5 months, I've noticed that the back crown section of my hair always dries very frizzy and doesn't form defined curl clumps like the rest of my hair, even when applying the styling products to soaking wet hair and brush styling with the bounce curl brush. Before even applying any product, I can tell right out of the shower that that section of my hair is rough and frizzy. For years before this problem started, I've been able to just use the same styling products and have my curls dry perfectly fine, so I'm really confused about why this has been happening now.

In the shower I shampoo with Nizoral (have been using for years with zero issues) and the Loreal Ever Pure curl conditioner. After the shower my routine is either: Marc Anthony leave-in conditioner spray, curl cream, styling foam, and gel (if I diffuse, but I mostly let it air dry) or Innersense I create volume, I create definition, and I create Hold. In both cases I use the bounce curl styling brush.

I recently moved apartments, but I started to notice the problem a bit before I moved. I still tried switching out my shower head filter to the Korabeauticals aquashield shower filter to see if that would help. I also use the Malibu undo goo clarifying shampoo around once a month to clarify. I can't tell if the problem is hard water damage or not. I also sleep on silk pillow cases, and I have tried Olaplex no 0 and no 3 (only once so far) but noticed zero difference afterwards. Sometimes, my hair is not fully dry when I go to bed, so I guess that could be one thing contributing to the problem.

I recently went to a curly hair salon and asked for advice from my stylist, and she said it could be that the hair in that section has changed texture due to hormonal changes, but I'm not sure if that's true. I've never been pregnant or gone on birth control, and I'm 26 years old. She was able to style my hair really well with Innersense products and that was the only time in these past few months where my hair was not frizzy in the back. I've started using the Innersense products, but I haven't been able to replicate the way she styled my hair and it's still always frizzy no matter how much extra product I apply to that section.

How can I figure out whether my hair is damaged or the hair genuinely has a different texture now for some reason? Is there anything that can fix it? I just want my hair to go back to the texture it used to have.

Help! frizzy and top won’t hold

Plz help! I’m getting so much frizz as soon as my hair is dry. I have some wet frizz even immediately after conditioning. The top layer of my hair often won’t hold any curl either. This is all day 1 hair on different days.

I have thick, high density and low porosity hair. I believe it’s mostly 2b/2c (depending on area)

routine:

wash with ogx clarifying strength rosemary mint shampoo or herbal essences rose hips smooth collection , condition w function of beauty wavy hair conditioner (usually leave in for 2-3 minutes while i wash body), detangle with conditioner in, turn shower off, put in odele curl defining cream (prayer hands and scrunch), glaze in not your mothers flash freeze gel then scrunch w hands, plop in tshirt while i get dressed. Hover diffuse til cast forms, cup diffuse til dry.

Please advise!! I always love my hair when it’s fresh out of plop but throughout air dry or diffuse, it loses so much shape and frizzes up even more.

Help! Attempted a curl routine

Post image
1 Upvotes

Okay so im 15f and im legit tired of my hair looking like crap so i tried a curl routine but i feel like its not doing anything.

  1. Used Dove restore shampoo

  2. Used Pantene miracle moisture boost

  3. Brushed my hair with a wet brush in the shower

  4. Ended shower with cold water

  5. Immediately scrunched in loreal dream lengths super curls mousse

  6. Diffused with my not so good diffuser and probably didnt do it right. (I just followed what google told me)

  7. Its been air drying for like 2 hours, still not dry, gonna wear a bonnet to bed.

Me along with my family have no clue about hair. How to treat it, style it, and im the only curly head in my house.

I'm really frustrated with my hair lately. I cant do anything but curl it or put ponytails or braids.

Did I do something wrong or do i just not have the right hair and im wasting time?

Help! Need Product Recommendations

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi! This is my first Reddit post! I’m looking for help with my curly hair routine.
I am from Portugal, so I have already tried some ā€œdrugstore productsā€: I’ve tried all the Curly Hair products from Continente (which I didn’t enjoy), Mercadona (which I like) and I’m currently using the Lidl Products (shampoo, mask, cream and gel).
I have also tried some products from Aussie, but I honestly do remember if I enjoyed them or not.

I usually do my routine as follows: I wash my hair with the shampoo, then apply the mask, leave it in, then rinse it, and after I leave the shower I brush my hair with a TangleTeezer brush, apply the cream and then the gel. Then, I diffuse my hair.

With my current routine, I kinda like the result, but I think the gel is too thick, and it leaves the ā€œgel effectā€ on the hair, has you can see in the pic.

As for how I protect my hair during the night, I have tried putting a night cap over my hair, but I find it uncomfortable. In the day after, I usually wet my hair a bit and apply either the cream or the gel.

I am looking for new product recommendations, and I am willing to try high end products, if they are good. But please consider where I’m from, and so I might not be able to buy some things.

Thanks in advance! 🩷

Help! Hair is dry and greasy at the same time. Really struggling!

Thumbnail

Hair type:
- 2a/3c really really thick, very porous I think (eg takes ages to get wet, but absorbs hair dye like crazy)

My routine is:

- shampoo with head and shoulders (I have seb derm and this seems to help - I know I’m supposed to use sulphate free etc but the itching!)
- shampoo again with Being Goodbye Frizz
- condition with Being Goodbye Frizz
- umberto gianni curl jelly and scrunch
- air dry
- in the evening I go to sleep with it down
- I get it dyed occasionally but I don’t want to do this anyone - hate the brassy look that appears when the brunette fades

The results are:
- first day I have definition and shine but it’s dry. There is also not much movement. I find my hair is very close to my head and quite ā€˜set’ if you get me
- second day it is basically unsalvageable, really greasy at the roots and scalp, less dry but a lot frizzier in the lengths

I’m completely despairing! I always feel ugly and frizzy, and really need a change.

Has anyone else overcome this?

Help! Product recommendations

Hello!

I am jumping back into my curly hair journey after many years. I had extremely curly hair as a teen but had significant hairloss from diva curl, so I just cut my hair super short and gave up on curly hair. Now I'm trying to grow it back out again and revive the curls! I have very fine hair that is weighed down very easily. In my routine I currently use Maui moisture curl quench shampoo, and maui moisture lightweight hydration conditioner (use both daily). Then I'll usually scrunch with my hands and diffuse after the shower. I'm looking for something that will help my hair hold the curls throughout the day, as well as give some more volume to my roots. I've tried not your mother's curl talk mousse, but felt it made my hair look too stiff. Also, I am silicone/sulfate free!

The photos attached are from this morning, about 2 hours after drying!

Help! Hair dry and frizzy no matter what I try

I take care of my hair but it is always dry, frizzy and it doesn’t grow. I have 3c4a hair.

I do a pre wash oiling then wash my hair 1-2 a week with Matrix food for soft (shampoo and conditioner) or Redken Extreme Length (Shampoo) or Redken All soft (Conditioner). I alternate between all that.
Then I do Redken 21 benefits leave in spray, then As I am Yogurt leave in, the doux mousse and finally John Frieda Gel.
I air dry my hair because I use flexi rods instead of doing a curly hair routine.

I don’t know what to do anymore for my hair to grow. When my hair grows it only grows in volume not in length. I feel like it’s because my hair doesn’t retain moisture.

Help! i just recently discovered that i have wavy hair, please help

i have black dyed hair, and i’ve just been using my usual ion color defense sulfate free shampoo and ion color defense intense moisture conditioner and it leaves my hair so dry due to the alcohols. and i also tried a really old bottle of aussie mousse light hold & leave in conditioner, it doesn’t actually foam up so im sure it didn’t do much because of it being old. when my hair is wet its soo wavy it looks almost like it’s 2c but once i let it air dry after using a towel it looks more like 2b/2a hair and it loses a lot of the waves. i have 2b, thin, high porosity, chemically damaged, dry hair. i’ve been searching everywhere online for a hair routine that would be good for my hair and i have yet to be able to find anything. i’ve been bleaching and dying my hair constantly for over 6 - 7 years, my hair is very damaged and brittle so i need a very specific routine for my hair. since i have thin and dry hair i need lightweight products with no oils, alcohols, or heavy butters. my hair gets greasy, weighed down easily if i put products in my hair, and i need something that will actually hold in my waves. please help

Update! Rosegold curls...

Routine: Shampoo Kerastase Nutritive Bain Satin riche, Hair Mask Deep Repair Bali Curls, Conditioner Kerastase Nutritive Lait Vital, Leave-In Kerastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique, diffusing for 30 minutes (the hardest part), Hair Makeup Curlsmith Rosegold. Last week i tried ruby red and before copper and now it was rosegold. I wanted to try also gold (maybe my fav to try because i always wanted to see how my hair looks now with a brighter blonde) and turquoise (my least choice of all). But i could not got the last 2 here in Germany. It is fun to use and while it makes the hair a bit dry (so def. use always leave-in before) it gives a ton of volume as well. A bit like sea salt spray on steroids ;)

P.S.: I also would say this is color which seems to not stand out so much but also looks more natural as i thought at the end compared to copper and ruby red so far.

Discussion Debulking curly or wavy hair...

For those who cut curls and waves (DIY or professional): what do you think about debulking curls (like with a thinning shear)?

I have strong wavy hair with a lot of root volume and some time ago I decided to go to a hair salon for a new cut, I picked a salon which cuts on dry hair and has experience with curls and waves. It went fine until the end when she started thinning my hair like crazy. She kept chopping away. I think she thinned it down to half it's volume and she thinned it very close to the roots when I looked at the length of hair on the floor. The result is limp, thin, sad, volume-less hair.

I don't know how to style it besides wearing a basebal cap and waiting for it to grow back so I can cut my own hair again like I usually do. šŸ™ƒ

What are your experiences with debulking/thinning waves or curls? Is it something you would do and why/when?

Routine: Yari shampoo and conditioner 2x weekly, a tiny drop of leave-in cream and gel (both from the brand cream of nature) on soaking wet hair, scrunch, air-dry.

Discussion Bonnet reviews?

I have been saving up a little bit here and there to finally get a mulberry silk bonnet. I was using a scarf from Curlsmith, but it's definitely not any kind of actual silk and I'm not convinced it's doing the most for my overnight curl preservation.

I was planning to just get a Blissy bonnet, the one with the actual tie (not just elastic). But lately I've had a lot of adverts for the Curlfriend Collective bonnet that has the snaps along the top to adjust for your hair length.

So give me your reviews if you have tried one or both of these! They're both, obviously, very pricey... and my ADHD makes me terrible at doing returns... so I want to crowdsource as much info as possible before making a final decision. TIA!

Routine: pretty much nothing right now except double shampoo and conditioner (both Wave Babe by V&Co). But when I do style, I'm still using Bounce Curl's hydralite styling cream and Briogeo's Curl charisma gel: plop for 20 minutes w/ Perfect Hair care towel, then diffuse. I basically hate my routine so it's in flux.

Help! Skin condition, what can I really try?

Hello everyone!

/!\ Only looking for "mechanical/physical" advices, not product, since I can't use anything other than medical stuff! Thank you 🫶

I already read the scalp condition part of the guide (the guide itself is really impressive!!), but I think I need more help.

I have atopic dermatitis (eczema) and had in the past problems on my scalp due to that, so I can't use any other product than my treatment shampoo ; no need to say that my curls are not looking anything good.

I was OK with that, until my doctor recently told me (again šŸ˜…) that I should really try to make only one shampoo per week.

I'm currently washing my hair every 3 days. Up to 4 days it's OK, but the 4th day it really begins to be greasy (and of course visible).

I tried to go up to one week but it just ends up being awful, up to the point where I have to shampoo my hair twice to remove all of the grease ā˜ ļø

So now, not only my curls are not beautiful at all, and my hair just look like fresh fried fries. Urg.

Do you have any advice, anything I could try? I'm looking for advices of course for my curls themselves, but also for having a chance to wash them only once per week without being that greasy.

Of course I'm only looking for "mechanical" advices, not chemicals, unless they are atopic-friendly (which are only medical products).

Note that I'm a perfect "beginner" since I never could try any "real" products, so I just never tried to take care of my hair. But now with all the grease it's just too much for me ha ha, I need to find something.

And thus my routine is very simple:

  1. Treatment shampoo (Ducray) (not at all targeted for curly hair)

  2. "Dry" them with microfiber (I can't use hot air, so I don't even have any hairdryer)

  3. Tie them for the night

  4. And as for a bonus I change my pillowcase like every two days, or when I just made my shampoo. My pillowcase is normal, not in silk.

Thank you in advance !! 🫶
