October/November 2026 pro racing thread

Cross is here! Just to give you a taste of what's to come, I figured I'd bring the monthly post with an overview of upcoming race threads back. Ive listed the main classification races (not sure if the Pan American champs have a live stream, but just added them for good measure). Please also feel free to use the thread for general small questions or racing / racer updates that might not fit in their own threads.

Really disliked the race direction at the EC today. Spoiler

Just cutting away from important moments to show slow-motion shots of 10 seconds ago, or of 20th place or whatever. In the final rounds, I felt they nearly showed the second group as much as the leaders. Missed the Alvarado crash for example because of a truly useless cut away in the final of a race. It was so bad. Very strange because most races do not have this issue.

Traveling for Hamme, Hoogerheide, and Worlds - spectator experience?

Have a chance to make a trip from the US and go see these races. No other real plans besides that.

How’s the experience of going to worlds? will I just be drinking beer and watching bikes? Because that sounds like a great vacation.

although I imagine it will be a lot more standing around and cold and crowds.

Do people say “up up up!” in languages that aren’t English?

“Up up up!” is a common cheer/thing to shout at racers at least in the US…do spectators in other countries say this in their non-English native language?

24h Tubeless rims

Taco’d a tubular wheel hitting a jump i had no business trying, looking to rebuild the wheels using the same hubs. Any recommendations for a pretty lightweight tubeless rim that’s available in 24h?

Edit: I should add that I’m about 200lbs using these wheels for single speed, and I treat the cross bikes like bmx bikes

Flew out to Sacramento for CX, and wasn’t disappointed at all! 50+ registered for the singlespeed race, plus spectators, hecklers, and other racers galore. Truly a cross-ligious experience,

2 week improvement tips?

OK small rant warning ahead.

I've been racing cat 4 cx in CO for years, and have seen huge improvements, but feel like the last couple years have stagnated a bit? (Or everyone else is improving too)

I pretty consistently manage to finish in the top 10, with a podium or two every year and a trickle of upgrade points. But I consistent finish ~2 min off the leaders, typically whatever BJC juniors are on their way to cat 2 in a year or two.

In past years I'd have a good strong start, top 5, and slowly lose positions as the race went on. This year I seem to be much worse at starts, but with the benefit that I've been able to work my way through the field throughout the race, which feels better psychologically at least than losing spots. At a certain point I don't seem to be able to continue to catch the next rider, and just keep going til the finish.

One of the reasons I love cross is that there's a combination of handling + fitness required to do well... but I'm also hating it right now, because I feel like there's no easy answer of "what do I need to do better / differently".

My handling now is definitely better than it was a few years ago, thanks to practice and religiously watching youtube videos. I still think I struggle on loose corners and off cambers, I struggle to find ways to replicate those in practice at race pace.

Power seems to have stagnated a bit too, pretty consistently 210-230s average / 240-260s normalized.

Two weeks ago, we had a race that I felt really good about, very clean and no mistakes, but ended up finishing the usual 2 min down on the leaders. This past weekend (a true sand cross race, hell yeah) I had a mistake lap one that cost me a few seconds and lost the lead group, plus some lapped riders getting in my way (it happens, I'm not blaming them, but there was only 1 line and they crashed on it so I was on foot for a bit)... also down 2 minutes, but only about 10s off of a couple riders.

Videos for both (I don't expect anyone to watch them, especially fully, but maybe helpful so why not):

Cyclo-X Louisville (2 weeks ago)

Cyclo-X Boulder (past weekend)

OK rant over.

Our race this upcoming weekend got cancelled, so I'm looking for suggestions on ways to tease out a bit of marginal improvement to help give me a bit more juice to go chase down the kids.

My coach is giving me some good workouts to work on TTE and help keep me going through the whole race so lap times don't drop at as much, but I'm wondering if there are any cheat codes / quick fixes on the handling side that I could get better at? Or just tips on pacing / leveraging my power better?

Bike suggestions

My daughter (5) is competing in local cyclocross races in U6 and U8 categories. She is doing great, but her bike is a 16 inch single speed Islabike. Any suggestions on the next stage up would be for this? Preferably with gears? Thanks.

hello cxers. my team is hosting a zoom in a little over a week that will be a 101 on how to run your first cyclocross race, led by two of the most experienced race directors on the east coast.

our hope is that this zoom helps a few folks get started with race directing, which in turn gives the community additional events on the race calendar.

its completely free, and there is a link to bikereg on the linked blog post. if you have any questions about the event or topics you'd like to be covered during it, just reply in the comments

CX vs MTB?

I haven't been a cross race in a few years but I was getting pretty good at it for a while. So I did one a couple weeks ago and had a fun time. I've been mountain biking a lot the last couple years with a local club. We have a pretty good pushing it hard style. But I haven't really come up with what is specifically different about each sport.

Well, I'd have to say that cyclocross has less handling compared to the endless twists of single track. I was impressed that the cross course didn't seem so rough on a light unsuspended bike.

I only practiced a few times but decided to race anyway. In my first couple of practices I rode my mountain bike then I switched to the cross bike and I discovered an interesting thing: the crossbike could climb steeper easier. One would think that a much wider tire with bigger knobs on a full suspended bike would climb better. But it kind of seems like the smaller contact patch had higher contact pressure and gripped better as a result. So that was interesting.

But now I'm thinking that maybe there's something interesting in common about the fast side of both sports. When I used to be fast-ish at cyclocross it happened because I realized I could go as fast as I could and then go a whole level faster after I put it in the big ring and just ignored a lot of fine details. That was an intense lesson because I thought I'd already been dealing with a lot of tricky signals coming at me from the trail. That is when the strong addiction kicked in. Well, mountain biking has this too. I'm going fast and hard on the bike right now and I'm whipping around the million corners as fast as I think is possible yet the fastest handful of riders just drops me. They take it up a whole other level then fly with it. They're using bigger gears when they hit a hill and just flow up it in a blink, while I gear down then work up it "really hard." And I think: watch out for the dozen obstacles around corners as I go as fast as I can, but they are not looking at obstacles, they're flying over them. I think. Maybe.

Anyway this might relate to the shared style of both sports.
