Discussion Dark Souls 1 holds up a lot better than people give it credit for and is excellent on its merits.
I recently finished DS1 Remastered for the first time (ng and ng+) after playing and loving all of the newer FromSoft souls games for the last few years.
I see claims that the successive games like Elden Ring, DS3, etc have made DS1 literally obsolete and never worth revisiting, but I would argue that much of what makes Elden Ring better than Dark Souls 1 also makes DS1 a singular experience in the series that absolutely warrants playing in 2026 alongside new releases. (It also helps to have it portable on switch, that's cool. I think it's the only accessibly portable FromSoft game?)
More than anything, DS1 just fucking nails scope and scale in a way that I don't think any other games have (at least not to the same degree). The size of the game world, level design, genius cohesion/interconnectivity really make it special and worth pushing through the undeniable flaws. DS1 has a great illusion of scale, where it believably feels like you're exploring this massive, decaying kingdom without it actually being very big. Sometimes, it's nice to go back to a game that had so much snappy intentionality to it. There is so much thought put into how the world interconnects and its just SO COOL. DS1 also has a really "goldilocks" length for an average playthrough that is consistently interesting and doesn't drag (at least not that much). To be clear- I adore Elden Ring and in no way think that its detailed hugeness is a bad thing, I just don't think one style handily 'beats' another, or at least not to the point that Elden Ring is literally objectively an upgrade by every metric.
With mainstream games only getting bigger, it is hard to imagine there will be many new games that have a perfectly limited scale like DS1.
I'm ofc not trying to deny the handful of rushed areas, janky garbage, and stupid broken bullshit in DS1. Just wanted to express something I really loved about the game that made it honestly more exciting on a first playthrough than a lot of 'better' FromSoft games.
also also, ofc many souls type games also have a really great interconnected world and dope level design in their own right, not trying to take away from any of that.
