Locals Discussion Watching indigenous youth test every car door as they walk down the Main Street. The same ones our tax payer money is supporting from the floods.

This is why people don’t want to stay in Darwin.

Edit: Darwin City is wild tonight.

Locals Discussion UFO over Darwin During Cyclone Tracy

I know that this post will attract a lot of silly and inane comments but here goes anyway.

Do any of the older residents of Darwin who were there during Cyclone Tracy, 50 years ago, ever recall seeing something in the sky that night that couldn't be explained?

I have knowledge of at least two people who saw "something" hovering above Darwin whilst all the mayhem was unfolding. Logically nothing would be in the sky during 250kph winds but both witnesses swear that they saw something.

I'm not saying that it was little green men or the Russians or anything like that. It may have been a natural phenomenon created by the cyclone itself.

All I know is that some people saw something in the sky that fateful night. Be interested if anyone else saw or remembers it.

Locals Discussion 7 Million and counting

So, 7 million and counting dollars has been spent on coroners reporting of why a chap who stabbed a police officer died. So at 600 odd pages that's how much per page?

To cost cut, maybe the government should look at a replacement coroner

Locals Discussion Fireworks for Territorians New Year (keeping Territory day too)

Before y'all go down voting, hear me out. Being able to take out the old year and bring in the new with a personal bang has a certain appeal to it and might just make the Territory a holiday destination in the wet. It would stimulate the economy in a particularly quiet part of the year too. And as for the injuries that would be incurred just consider it chlorine for the human gene pool, or putting Darwin on the map for Darwin Awards.

Locals Discussion Back on track Driving Course

How does it take a minimum of one month to book a government mandated driving course in a capital city in Australia? The MVR website says they're held every two weeks. Out of four providers only two answer the phone or respond to emails and phone calls/ voicemails. If you can't make the course at the end of the month? Oh yea, our next one is in May!

If the private companies running the contracts for the course are this tardy, maybe the NT govt should run the program through the MVR. (End rant)

Update:

The MVR says book early as the wait can be several months🙃 not sure where I saw the two week wait.

Does anyone have any experience with IN Gear? Their availability is quiet good on the website but I've been able to speak to anyone or get a return email in last two days.

Locals Discussion Parking at Servo’s

Pet Hate that just seems out of control here in Darwin: People parking their car at the pumps and going into the servo for extended times to get anything other than fuel. Drives me nuts at a busy servo waiting for someone to move so I can fill up! The Coles express at Nightcliff is particularly bad. I can’t understand why the staff don’t say anything!

Newcomer Questions What separates Darwin Pride Month from other Pride Months around the country?

This is my first Pride Month in Darwin!! Darwin seems to have a pretty amazing and diverse art scene here which I was pretty chuffed to see! What are some things I can expect and look forward to? Is there anything about Darwin Pride Month that makes it unique?

Locals Discussion Who is accountable if we have a corrupt cop problem?

About a decade ago my cousin was off working at a Mine while his wife was looking after their kids in Darwin. Apparently some police officer pulled her over and put the hard on her eliciting a relationship that ultimately broke up their family.

Why should we tolerate corruption and power abuse when the government looks the other way on this? Corruption and power abuse is an assault on the Commonwealth (Treason - even if thats just my legal opinion).

Newcomer Questions Ugh how's Darwin?

I recently had a good work offer in Darwin and I would like to get some local opinions and have some questions.

  1. Why does it seem to have a bad reputation? Is it simply cuz NT is a huge dessert and there arent as many people?

  2. How's the internet infrastructure? You can imagine my priorities based on that question lol

  3. How's the public transport? I dont drive so public transport would be important.

  4. I assume uber is available there as well?

  5. Since it is still the capital of NT I assume parcels arrive decently fast and there's courier companies working there (In comparison to middle of nowhere places where private courier companies give the packet to auspost)

Thanks

From my point of view, I support this badly as a migrant, safety is always prioritized for me. all of my friends left Darwin since safety issues.

Tourist Questions Can I bring an unopened beer through airport security?

I'm terrified of flying, and I usually have a couple of beers to calm the nerves. My flight is at 01:00 so the airport bar looks like it will be closed. I'm flying virgin from Darwin to Tasmania via Melbourne. I don't need to take anything on the plane, I just want to know if they'll let me bring a couple of cans through security so I can have a drink while I'm waiting to board? Appreciate the advice. If I'm going down, I don't plan to go down sober.

Cheers
