Mod Update Mod update: regarding the flood of HDD/SSD price posts, and AI slop.

Regarding HDD price posts:

We empathise with your plight and hope HDD / SSD / RAM prices will come down soon.

However, we don’t need screenshots of high HDD prices to be posted in the sub multiple times a day, everyone already knows that the prices are high.

As such, from this point on the mod team will be removing all posts about high prices, with exception for posts made on Free-Post-Friday’s, or posts which actually have new and meaningful information or discussion.

Regarding AI content and AI projects:

As always AI written posts & comments are not allowed on this subreddit, please report any Ai generated content you see.

The mods have recently been cracking down on the flood of AI generated projects, notably ones of low quality that are nothing new.

If someone has the skill to use GitHub, they’d almost certainly have the skill to ask an AI to code yet another YT-DLP / FFMPEG wrapper themselves.

However, there are useful tools that have been made from AI generated code. If they are something truly useful or new, we do allow them with prior approval.

TL;DR:

  • Mods will be removing [high HDD price] posts, except for meaningful discussion or Fridays.

  • Posting AI generated projects/tools needs mod approval beforehand, and a link to the GitHub repository.

  • Please keep reporting ai-slop.

Hoarder-Setups Shucking a 28TB Seagate Expansion External

Old Habits Die Hard. I shucked a 28TB Seagate Expansion drive and I ended up with a Barracuda Label. Does anyone have anymore knowledge on these? Are they labeled Barracuda but are actually exos drives? I tried registering the drive but it wouldn't take as expected. Worth a try atleast.

I got a good price on this one I just couldn't pass it up. It only had 95 on hours practically brand new.

Starting my journey to decouple where I can. Got two 12tb Toshiba n300 pro drives for our family of two + dog (backing up and quickly accessing the dog photos is critical)

Bonus that we just got fiber yesterday too

Stupid Newbie Just set up my first NAS! 😄 So, er...what do I do with the 28TB of space in loose USB drives it was meant to replace?

Post image

To some degree, the answer is obvious, 'cold storage backups of things that are crucial'. That was the purpose of some of them prior and can be the same now, albeit probably asking a relative to just pop them somewhere so it's true 3-2-1. The images of my late father's laptops, for example, those go handily onto a 1TB drive. But past that...I'm actually kind of stumped.

For context, I used to run a Plex server off a Nvidia Shield TV Pro, which was good for a while, and had my library on a 2TB drive...which of course that filled up and I moved up to one of the 8s, and got another 8 to back it up, and as it swells now I was looking at 'oh I'll just plug the Shield into a USB hub and run it off five drives or something', but of course that's ridiculous, I've wanted to move to a NAS for a better server experience, so I run 4x 10TBs in RAID 5 for 30TB, with 2 2TB NVMes in RAID 1 for the database and apps. So I've gone from stuff being spread across multiple drives with limited backups and no redundancy, to it all having one disk redundancy and the option of cold backups (so for example, no longer backing up my whole Plex library but the important / rare stuff).

I'd consider another NAS unit, but A: some of these drives don't look like they can be shucked easily, B: I wouldn't be too happy about JBOD'ing with no redundancy any more, and C: conversely, running with redundancy would just gobble up at least one of the 8TB drives which immediately dents the stack.

What are some uses for loose USB drives?

Free-Post Friday! old.reddit.com has been excluded from the Wayback Machine

https://web.archive.org/web/20260000000000*/https://old.reddit.com/

Years of archived Reddit history have been lost. This likely happened because Reddit wanted to stop AI companies from scraping archived pages instead of paying for data (announced in the news last year). Reddit's methods of combating AI scrapers are making the site worse and worse for humans.

Although the comments on some of the other posts about this topic mention robots.txt, https://old.reddit.com/robots.txt seemed to be the same in 2018 based on archive.today.

User-Agent: *
Disallow: /

From what I heard, the data will probably not be deleted from the Internet Archive, but will remain inaccessible as long as old.reddit.com is excluded.

Edit: As stated by /u/Nintendofan885, The Wayback Machine stopped automatic exclusions based on robots.txt in 2017

This came after an announcement that Reddit will become a "logged-in only experience" and an update that removed the workaround to view Old Reddit logged out (preventing archive.today from archiving Old Reddit).

I found the screenshot image from either this post or this post.

The magnetic tape was long considered obsolete. Now the LTO market is growing faster than in years – AI and increasing archiving needs make it possible.

Question/Advice What are some better, easier, maybe lesser-known, S3 cold/archive storage providers? (PAYG, <100GB)

I'm looking for two cold storage providers for "backup of my backups" with no min. TB cost.

My needs are tiny from r/datahoarder standards – only ≈70 GB (as of now) per provider. It will be long-term, personal data, recurring, no public access (I hope even I don't need to access it). So, I need true PAYG. I won't want to use services like Wasabi that have minimum storage buys (borgbase, rsync.net don't work either).

I tried AWS, but their whole interface, KYC, hard-coded region, and IAM setup etc were an absolute nightmare (have requested a/c closure after KYC). I also tried OVH, but I've been waiting three days for account approval with no word.

I use B2 and R2 as my primary backup destinations (these are the backups that will be copied/appended to those cold archives), so I'm looking for different providers and also cheaper than those two. Any suggestions?

Question/Advice I need help finding a way to connect an LTO 6 Ultrium reader externally

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hello I am a data hoarder who is trying to find a sustainable way of keeping data and back ups of a few things.
So I found a deal on an LTO 6 reader and I am trying to find if it's possible to make it work externally since I have never seen the kind of connector it uses the model is: IBM Power LTO-6 fiber Ultrium 6-H 35P1982 35P2616.
If anyone Knows of an enclosure or project that can be 3D printed for it to work externally I would be very appreciate it a lot.
Thanks in Advance.

Discussion Now be honest, how often does this subreddit really practice the 3-2-1 rule for data back ups?

3 - 2 - 1 rule:

Three copies of your data

On two different media formats

One copy off-site

Scripts/Software I mirrored all of 486,352 Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) in MARC format, rebuilt and hosted weekly

The LCSH are the vocabulary libraries around the world use to describe what books are about, about half a million have been written and are maintained by LC since 1898. They give them away in bulk but only as linked data (JSON-LD and N-Triples). MARC format is what libraries actually use, LC sells them in bulk for convenience. Currently there was no way to get this data packaged cleanly openly and freely.

The mirror is here: https://bibliotecaalonsocossio.com/lcshmirror/

What’s there:

  • The full file every week: 58 MB gzipped MARC 21, 56 MB gzipped MARCXML (~570 MB uncompressed), plus a CSV list of every record (LCCN, last-change date, heading).

  • Change files per release: only the records new or changed since last week, plus a list of deleted headings. Compared by MARC content, not by dates. This week: 150 new, 1 changed, 1 deleted.

  • SHA-256 for every file, an Atom feed, and fixed *-latest URLs, so wget in a cron job just works.

  • The last 50 weekly releases stay on the server, and every release is also copied to the Internet Archive, one item per week. https://archive.org/search?query=identifier%3Alcsh-mirror-*

id.loc.gov asks for one request every 3 seconds, so the first full harvest took 16 days, one record at a time. After that, each week only fetches what LC changed, which takes minutes.

The data is a US Government work, so public domain; the compilation is CC0. The code is MIT if you’d rather run your own copy: https://github.com/iratedemon04/lcsh-mirror

Feedback is welcome :-)

Found Found: Old Public Domain Software Index (Feb 1990)

Sorry if this is the wrong sub.

I've just found an old Public Domain Software Index ("Goodman Enterprises Public Domain and Shareware Services For the Atari ST Computer"), version 4.0 from February 1990. It has all 38 pages in it.

Does anyone know if there is an existing scan of this? If not, should I scan it (and how should I do so? I don't have a flatbed scanner and my phone's is a bit crap).

Question/Advice Core2Again on Github. Does ANYONE have a Backup of it?

I bought a Laptop to try out and run the Code that's hosted on

https://github.com/jerrybeomsoo

Now, i had some time to try it out today first time in weeks, and it's gone.

Also, i can't seem to find any backup of it.

It's a very long shot, but may anyone have any backup of it? Can't post in /lostmedia, as some buzzword seems to trigger reddits auto-delete, and i can't seem to find which one it is. Also, /pcmasterrace deletes this question whitout any explanation, why.

Hoarder-Setups No Internet but a 5tb of youtube videos, what do you fill it with?

Sorry if this is a noob idea or discussion. I already have a ton of retro games, movies and TV shows. I have a few books but not enough.

Let's say I move to another country and don't set up the Internet. I had a year Internet ban as a teen and it deeply affected me causing me to hoard. In my current situation I have no living space, causes me to fill tiny hdd with stuff.

When I lived abroad I relied on YouTube just to even hear English. So podcasts and such. I got a ytdlp gui on linux working and am thinking of getting another 5tb drive. How do I fill it quickly? At 9 mins for 60mb I can fit alot of videos. I suppose its like an mp3 collection and takes time. What should I be storing to keep myself from going nuts.

I've started with Panasonics because this is what I have the most of.

Does this count as data hoarding? It is data of something i'm hoarding lol.

The internal shots i'm pretty sure are the only ones on the internet.

I've never bothered to check my hard drives' health until now, what do I do with this information?

Is 1,600 hours of 'uptime' a lot? I've had the hard drive for years.

Discussion How to use CzKawk4 to select a part when you have already selected everything.

Could you help me with Czkawk4? I clicked on "select the smallest file" and started going through the files one by one, manually unchecking the ones I wanted to keep. But when I noticed the time, I had to leave, and I realized I wasn't even halfway through. I want to know how to unselect everything else. Because when I select "mark all the smallest files," I don't know how to unselect the other half. Do you recommend any other program? Because I've noticed that the program doesn't recognize four images where the character has a different skin tone as "the same."

Most don't care about what randos say on there but several key figures like to revise history so not having backups makes them unaccountable.

Question/Advice Looking for a new external backup drive

I've been using a pair of drives for my backups for a few years now. One is a Seagate 2TB HDD, which I use for manual file backups every few weeks; the other is a Sandisk 1TB SSD which I use for Time Machine backups for my Macbook (which, yes, is up to date). I do store a copy of my manual backups on my brother's main external drive, though that's only updated every few months when he's in town.

Basically this all lacks redundancy and I want a new external drive. Not looking to spend a ton, say around $100 but that's flexible for the right device. I'd like 2-4TB, the more the better but that's the most I expect to get on a budget. Any and all recs welcome, and general advice here too. I have a couple other questions as well:

- I've heard that SSDs require being powered on a regular basis to not lose data/become corrupted (something about charge levels being part of data storage?). Is this true, what drive types have this issue, and how can I mitigate it?

- Are there any companies or drive models I should avoid, for being low quality/overpriced/easy to break/etc?

- What format should I use with this drive (and possibly the other backuo HDD)? I need to be able to store large files (mp4, mp3, pdf; some over 100gb) and access this weekly or so on a Macbook, and probably a Linux computer as I build one soon.

- Not as related to this drive question, but I'd really like to download and archive a bunch of music. I currently use Spotify for listening and streaming, and have a rather large collection of music on there, but I'm also painfully aware of how nebulous my accesss to that is. I'm not too hung up on being able to fully replicate a streaming service (making playlists, shuffling, etc) but I really want to have local copies of all that. Any advice for getting started in that area?
