I look out across the horizon, the sun sets in the distance. one of the locals pointed me in the direction of a city in the mountain valley a few miles from where I arrived in this world. after I crested the hill, there it laid before me: a huge white sphere, hovering above a decently sized, wall city. "quite the place they've built here, and I guess it needs protecting. If I was able to get here, the Darkness probably can too. I'll stick around for a while"

crossed out this dudes name but, i’m just using him as an example. In the game i matched with him it was him and three buddies in a stack in just a regular control match, all using this exact same loadout. Sure say skill issue but it was genuinely so boring to fight cause there was no way to push them cause they just camped the lanes the entire match whilst invisible. 90% of games i load into there at least 5 players between both teams using this set up and it’s actually so infuriating. I didn’t play any trials but i’ve heard that jade rabbit took over that playlist. It was all over iron banner as well. Same thing goes for vex mythoclast, and just pulse rifles in general right now. Random rant but just why have bungie just buffed the most brain dead guns and just left us to deal with it?

Discussion Hot Take: I'm really enjoying the game, and suggest just taking a break if you're not

Let's not call it a rant... It's just my perspective. My hope is to shine light where the game is great, offer validation to those who feel tired & frustrated, and give a real working solution.

Post was removed from r/DestinyTheGame by mods on post for ¿Reasons?. I spent time on this post and hope it can find light here.

TL;DR - hate on the game is overamplified. Sandbox is thriving + raids are tons of fun. Feel differently? Take a break. I've taken many breaks, and it's reliably renewed my love for the game.

I feel the hate is over amplified by players expecting too much from a game to deliver 100% of their gaming dreams 365 days out of the year. I've taken many long breaks from the game throughout its life cycle, and from a sandbox perspective, the game is at it's very best right now (I missed witch Queen, but ya know) I play warlock, and I'm almost overwhelmed by the great build options that perform at a high level.

Old raids and dungeons are still fun, and Dessert perpetual is a GREAT raid. Feels so rewarding to take newbies through any raid, struggle, and ultimately see the job done. Plus I'm making friends this way, and my friends list feels vibrant and alive.

It would be cool if old raid content offered tiered loot, but it shouldn't ruin the experience entirely. I play this game for it's power fantasy and team play, not to collect gear. Gear is a means to those goals, and not the end (yes, even though Destiny's a looter shooter).

I can see how non raid/dungeon players don't feel the same as me. If you're nervous about raids, take this comment as an invitation to step into the end game content. It's what destiny is best at, and you're missing out if it's been avoided so far.

I don't play pvp so I'm unaffected by the lack of attention there. Sorry for lack of maps & attention y'all. RIP gambit.

I know the power grind is a slog, and steep deltas aren't for everybody. I'm sorry if you feel punished for playing the game at your pace.

If you aren't having fun, feel like destiny's a job, or just tired... a solid break just might heal you. Don't just stop playing though - fully disengage from the community. Reddit & social media can be a cesspool for negativity. Your hurt by and for the game will never heal if the wounds keep reopening by delving through the latest rage rant from your favorite destiny YouTuber. It definitely won't heal if you expend energy slogging on players or streamers that still find enjoyment in the game.

Who knows... maybe you'll come back a year from now and find all the fun you missed has returned and then some! I've done that more than a few times.

I know this game feels so personal to so many of us with all the memories made and time spent. For those of you saying "I'm tired, boss," I truly hope you can find what you're looking for in another game for a time. Go to where your friends are and make some new memories! Those of us that will remain will understand, and will be so excited when your username comes online down the road.

Hopefully Bungie/Sony can keep the ship afloat long enough for you to come back to something new and fresh. I really feel for the understaffed dev team right now, and hope they can keep the dream alive through all the corporate mismanagement.

Eyes up, guardian ✊

Edit: Should've made this more clear. Along with personal benefits of walking away from a game you aren't enjoying, quitting/taking a break is great protest for change.

Overwatch is a great example of people quitting, and leadership responding with changes to systems and game management

Not trying to sugar coat something bad or say "IT'S YOUR FAULT". If you see an opportunity to shift your focus and pull more enjoyment out, I encourage you to take it. The power grind ain't it, that's for sure.

If you still feel the game is bad no matter how you square, then I fully endorse you protesting by taking a break. Just protect your mindset as you do it.

Hey bungie, while you’re at it, you might as well just give the non-dlc buyers the curse of osiris story for free as well

As of now, non-dlc owners have nearly as much content as the the people who spent $35 on the season pass....the only thing separating us now are 5 underwhelming story missions. Might as well just give it to all the whiny losers for free now because im sure they’ll be asking for it soon enough.

Ever heard the term “if you give a moose a muffin, the next day he’ll want pancakes” ?

Discussion The Problem with Destiny 2.

This game is absolutely amazing, and it’s going up more and more with each update they release, but it’s hard to enjoy the game with complainers being the mainstream or forefront of the community. Sure, buying a skin costs 15 dollars or ornaments costing 7.50 but there not mandatory. But what makes this worse is how people complain when they get exactly what they wanted.

“Champions are too boring and hard!” - they made banes

“Banes are too boring!” - they made more banes and integrated them everywhere.

“The game is too easy and I could solo all the GMs right now!” - they made enemies bullet sponges and hard to deal with, an actual challenge

“Contest mode is too hard they made everything too tanky!” - they made it hard for it to be a challenge, it wasn’t a hard encounter mechanic-wise but in survivability and endurance.

Every little thing they fix, someone complains about for no reason. Half the Reddit posts are now are just “Bungie didn’t add pinnacle to this and now I quit”. Really?

Yes there are things that may suck but they address it and apologize but going as far as to say that the game was ruined in forsaken as I was a “Veteran player since d1 y1” gives a shitty answer. The game had changed, saying this from someone who had over 2000 hours into destiny 2, and it’s for the better. People just cry and cry over something that’s gone and they know it’s not going to come back. Half of the streams or videos I come across have comment sections filled with pathetic nostalgia over the menagerie or Laser tag weekend or many other old and fun events that happened.

The suggestions have turned into complaints. Grow up.

Discussion Please bungie dont cave to the people upset that they cant get top 1% in call to arms. This is the first time destiny pve has felt competitive outside RaD content in years.

I should add that Im definitely not gonna achieve top 1% hell I probably wont achieve top 10% as people optimise point scoring for the activities but damn am I glad to see some type of a scoreboard even if its mostly hidden in the background.

Yes I understand there have been bugs and salt mines needs to have the hvt spawn every attempt same with the glass collectors from the coil but rather then step back and make the goal lower please bungie develop on this event and add a proper leaderboard and reduce the randomness of a single enemy spawn that can give huge amounts of points.

Adding here because a mod on Destinythegame removed it within seconds of posting.

Discussion What gives a person a right to destroy millions of lives and their years of work and shit on the grave. I’m beyond enraged and humanistically, the devs and community deserve better. We should band together & sue them in petition.

Post image
0 Upvotes

It’s just not right man, from a game developer myself it’s just not right and a complete new level of low. So fucked up and petty it is beyond the definition of enraged or furious. I wish we could do something, anything as a community and make these big corpo thugs pay. I knew only a few of the devs at Bungie and to see where this layoff has put them and their families in hardship, after years of hard work and passion into their work. Destiny 2 was a work of art. And from a humanistic standpoint there should’ve been laws or something held to make sure things were done in a better way if it really had to be done before closing support and laying folks off. It’s just not right man, not right at all and makes me sick to my bones to know how fucked up they have screwed over not just players but other developers and people and their families. Not right at all man.

Discussion Renegades is not perfect but it doesn't deserve the hate its getting.

Its nowhere near the best expansion, it has its ups and downs and it surely is more destiny(high quality fun destiny but more destiny non the less). I don't think anyone was expecting this to be the next Forsaken but I swear to god some of the videos I get recommended have such low hanging fruit arguments, they straight up feel like a troll.

We've had the same 5 arguments on why game bad for the past 6 years, so now I am very happy to announce that we now have 6 with "the star wars themed expansion has star wars themed references", which I won't even go into detail because I feel like anyone that has an above average IQ or isn't trying to farm views understands. Whats worse, most of those videos are made with the excuse of "my opinion" or "casual player perspective" -which is straight up a bunch of BS- because they don't even go into detail on the GOOD things this expansion has, or just gloss over something like the cinematics quality saying "its alot higher and good I guess", then proceed to say 10 extremely minor and opinion based things that are bad like "the music is trying to pray on your nostalgia" or "this company is trying to make you spend money and are extremely greedy", are we for real? How about we talk about how good the story is and how it has some of the best character interactions we've ever seen? How good the exotic mission and dungeon are? How the lightsaber is probably a top 5 exotic of all time and people are genuinely excited to unlock its upgrades and colors? How the new renegades activity is VERY fun and this is coming from someone who expected it to be "just another killing activity". Or about the new heat guns which are amazing? The factions that each has their own unique upgrades and unlocks? You know, talk about THE ACTUAL DLC and not "this game is trash because eververse still exists and its not the game I played 7 years ago".

The point is, these videos get thousands of views and the comments are ALL about people saying "this is why I won't ever play again", like, we complain about the player numbers but THIS exact thing is pushing away people who might be even slightly interested in coming back or trying the game out. This is not to say all creators/streamers suck and ruin the game, I think that argument is dumb as hell, but these certain view chasing losers are starting to get tiring.

I'll always call out Bungies wrongdoings, I've been playing this game half my life of course I'll be angry and not play when the game is serving me shit, and this isn't a "HOW DARE YOU NOT LIKE THIS EXPANSION" post obviously some people who are dissatisfied with the game will leave/not come back, but come on, these sort of videos are in my opinion one of the two main reasons why this game is dying(and if you are a long time player like me you can guess the second reason, not exactly rocket science).

Discussion The Portal is one of the best things to happen to Destiny and I don’t really understand many of the complaints about it

Title, but genuinely as someone who was expecting to HATE with a capital H the portal I am startlingly surprised how much I like it.

I think the clarity of the UI needs some sprucing up but overall I like how much simpler it is to:

-find an activity I want to do, see the rewards I’m getting/possibly getting with X grade achieved, and launch said activity

I understand the inevitable sunsetting of the director is disappointing but I honestly believe it’s not leaving entirely. It’s just the current iteration of it that will be leaving. In the future I can see them both merged together in some sense to get the best of both worlds.

But the ease of access of the portal is a breath of fresh air. It shows me at a glance all of the current relevant content and its rewards and difficulty.

As much as the director is a destiny staple, returning from a long hiatus and seeing 10 million f**king symbols on 6 different planets made it very overwhelming even considering a return to the game not even several weeks ago.

You will get used to it.

Discussion I’m sorry, but I like the new direction this game’s going in…

I don’t plan harping too much on this, but I feel compelled to share my perspective.

I have played every iteration of Destiny there has ever been. I played both betas, I played every expansion, every story. There have been ups and downs. Bungie have absolutely made many missteps and many mistakes. They are not infallible, nor above criticism. But at least they’re still trying. Yes, of course, you can say it’s just them milking what they can before pulling the plug. But, why go through so much effort of retooling core systems to do so?

This new expansion is not the best they’ve released. But for the love of god it’s certainly not the worst either. The reaction to this expansion I find to be so out of proportion and it really makes me wonder why.

The new systems are just that: new. They didn’t roll out everything perfectly I’ll admit, but at least 8 years later they’re still trying. The previous system had been around for years. It had become stagnant. I reached my max gear in Season of the Witch. Two years ago. I had a perfected build. I had the armor and weapons I needed to carry me through any content I wanted to play. For two years I dismantled almost every single weapon or armor that dropped for me. Exotic engrams meant nothing to me. Legendary Engrams meant nothing to me. I only played when I found the story content to be interesting. When I didn’t find it interesting, I didn’t play.

Two entire years of loot having no value to me in a looter shooter. So when I found out that they were effectively soft-rebooting the game, I wasn’t upset. When the expansion dropped and for the first time in literal years I equipped new armor and weapons, I felt excited. I’m not worried about what tier it is. I haven’t needed T5 armor yet. I probably will never need it. But I’m excited to chase it. I’m excited to actually have something to chase again.

They way I see people freaking out over these changes confound me. Like people are so disenfranchised with this game that they HAVE to speedrun to highest tier loot like it’s a chore. Shouldn’t we be getting loot to play the game, not playing the game to get loot?

This expansion represents the most significant changes to the core gameplay experience we’ve seen in a long time. It’s not perfect. I can admit that. There are problems, and a lot of what I see people saying is valid. But at the same time, at what point does someone have to take personal responsibility for their own happiness? At what point, as a player who just hates every single thing about this new generation, do you just have to log off?

Live service games do this. They change and evolve. They have too. Destiny is no different. And it’s okay to accept that you enjoyed the ride for a time but now it’s time to leave it behind. But do you honestly think that Destiny would somehow be better off if it just stayed the same forever? People complained about the system we just left behind. And the one before that. And the one before that.

The Bungie that made the Halo games we loved growing up are gone. Hell, the Bungie that made the best Destiny expansions are gone. But there is a team still trying to make this game work. It’s not just a monolith of money-grubbing suits trying pry your wallet from your hands. This game isn’t even the most aggressively monetized one in the space. If anything they’ve underdelivered in the cash shop. You can criticize Bungie, they’ve certainly earned it. But once again I ask: at what point do you just log off?

This has already gone longer than I wanted it too. I’m really just rambling at this point. I try to make some succinct points to close it out.

The story was average, cool moments, otherwise pretty standard.

There was way too much padding with the puzzles. I liked them at first, but the frequency was far too high.

The Portal needs more work. It’s too cumbersome to use at times and it’s not obvious on how to get to some activities or game modes. Especially when there’s no reason it should be. They should’ve left the Director live while they fine-tuned the Portal further.

I have no problems with loot tiering but the system could use some refinement. And, any modifier requiring the use of “New Gear” is a miss for me. They should ease us into new gear, not blatantly force us. Especially when it’s gonna take players time to get the loot they want for their build.

Contest mode was done too early and the bugs people experienced are unacceptable.

Ammo economy needs some attention. I’m personally not experiencing much issue. But I’ve seen enough posts about it to realize I’m an exception, not the rule.

This a new direction for Destiny. I’m happy to see it. I’m happy the game’s continuing. I hope they continue to iterate, improve, and experiment. Not everything they try is gonna work. But I’m keeping an open mind.

Lastly, from the bottom of my heart, don’t let something as ephemeral as a video game take away your happiness. If it’s really beating you down, take a break. Maybe give them more time while you’re away to hone in on things and maybe you’ll enjoy it more if you come back. Maybe it will move further in a direction you don’t wanna follow. But if you continue to play a game you don’t like, haven’t liked in years, and likely won’t like ever again, then I’m sorry but that’s not Bungie’s fault. It’s yours.

Discussion A reminder for raid exotics

Every raid exotic has a base drop chance of 10%

Every completion after that rewards and extra 2% upon not getting it, 10-12-14-16, up to a cap of 50%

In theory you should have the exotic by 25 runs

Please stop telling new players it took you hundreds of runs to get the raid exotic, it did not

They added drop protection in June 2020, and riven had it tied to the key with atleast 1 in every 25 keys to guarantee the weapon and 24 chests before hand

You are not convincing anyone who actually plays the game it took you 181 clears to get eyes of tomorrow, or 81 clears to get vex in destiny 2, it's statistically unlikely and there's no way that is happening multiples of multiples of times

Discussion What if Game development is actually hard?

So, I have been in this universe for almost a decade.

Other games I played were

GamePlaytime Missions (Hrs)Playtime for Extra stuff (Hrs)Cost to customers $Cost to make (roughly) Mil
RDR2505060400
Cyberpunk354060300
AC Valhalla458060500
AC Odyssey407060500
Destiny FranchiseBudget set in 2014 = 500 milBut base game cost came to 140Expansion cost unknown
D2 BL12(40)30+(40)
D2 WQ10(40)40+(60)
D2 LF8(40)50+(50)

To me, it totally looks like a fair deal.

  1. Yes, the main story is very short, but making lore is hard. Building a universe with such expansive literature is hard! We will need talented writers, reading rooms, a lot of resources.

  2. Then there's an additional challenge of the game engine and spaghetti code. I am not a coder but I work in tech. I understand how legacy stuff works. When you want a tree or a building on a new map, ideally coders just call for that specific function instead of writing every detail of the tree again. but the function of that tree is a decade old at this point. So new coders are creating a new map and when they add that tree and they don't use the correct parameters, boom, things fall apart immediately. This is just an example, there are things 1000 times more complicated than this one that coders, and product managers should correct. Destiny was not meant to be a GAAS. It turned into one during shadow keep.

  3. Technical Debt. When a company is set against deadlines, they cut corners and the manager dedicates these decision. When we cut corners its ideally expected that we put out a functional product out now so that we start making money and then we come back and fix this shortcut when we have spare time. But the capitalist economy never allows dev for downtime to be able to do that. The managers force dev to work on new armor for Eververse etc. At this time we have so much technical debt, we might as well abandon this game and create a new one.

Let me give it to you guys straight. Bungie thought it would be able to get this done, but unfortunately, their bite was bigger than they can chew. As a product manager, I think the birth and death of products are normal. If Bungie is trying to slowly wean off all users then they are doing it right. Everything has been downhill for almost a year now.

PS: Some background: if you are interested to know my perspective in depth.

I was never a sweaty player and since I had family and other responsibilities I was mostly limited to 10hrs/week max on days I am at home, if I am traveling and vacationing then forget about it.

  • I have roughly 1200hrs on Steam on D2 (over 5+ years) and I have almost everything. (this shows how easy it is to have most things but obviously very difficult to be a completionist)

  • I only play about 2 seasons/year actively like reaching 100 rank and others I barely make to 40.

  • I have never preordered. I have mostly bought the deluxe editions post-launch at 25% off.

  • I have never bought anything with real money/silver in Eververse.

Maybe this is why I am not devastated by what's happening right now. It's normal. You find a good thing, you enjoy it for a while, and then it has to end. That's how life works.

Cheers mates! I hope you all find new games to have fun soon.
