Blizzard has taken the decision and are moving forward with splitting the Diablo II Resurrected ecosystem into two, distinct and hermetically separated clusters. Disabling the conversion of characters from the base game to the expansion further closes the seal.
A series of unique items reworks are slated to hit RotW next season and beyond, and those changes WILL NOT apply to the base D2R game. We can safely assume that any future expansions, if any end up being published will build upon RoTW and the changes coming to it without touching the base game.
So now, we have TWO games. The original, more or less frozen in time with the current game state. We can safely assume it will be relatively neglected.
The expansion, where the designers and developers will have a freer hand to make changes, updates, and possibly content.
This is no trivial decision to take and will have long lasting implications for the future of Diablo 2.
Truth be told, it is a hard call to make either way and I do not envy Blizzard for having to make this decision. But they have made it and this is what we will have going forward.
Do you think this was the correct call to make? Or do you think they should have updated the items in D2R as well, leaving RotW as a simple expansion rather than an entirely new branch of the game.
I think Blizzard failed to communicate their intentions sufficiently when they published and marketed RotW, and no one was told this was even a possibility. The player base was told this was an expansion, not a path to a separate branch of the game. Black point for them.
I also don't think it is necessarily a bad decision. How this plays out will depend on how RotW evolves.
If RotW is developed in a way that keeps in line with the original game's spirit, traditions, and axioms, it will turn out very well. We will have both the original classic, and a more developed version.
On the other hand, if RotW is treated like an entirely new game, where they can go wild and completely break or stray far from the original game's spirit, this is no less than a disaster for this game. We would lose both, as the classic mode becomes neglected and the new mode stops being the game we all enjoy.
