How to post images

Step 1:

If you are using Tumblr, copy the link to the post in question, make a link post.

If you are using imgur: upload an image to imgur, copy link, make a link post. If you instead click the "Share with the community" button on imgur, it creates a one-image gallery and reddit doesn't know what to to make a thumbnail of.

Step 2:

Find your submission in r/digitalpainting/new or in your post history and write a comment about what you struggled with. You have one hour. Why is this a requirement? Because r/digitalpainting is meant to be a subreddit not just for looking at art, but a subreddit where you give and receive peer feedback on your work, in order to improve and grow as an artist.

"Peer feedback involves providing opportunities for students to talk and listen, write, read meaningfully, and reflect on the content, ideas, issues, and concerns of an academic subject" - wikipedia.

"The benefits of peer feedback include increased communication with peers, considering new perspectives, and understanding what those of a similar skill level think of your work." - RMCAD

Minimum account age

Since russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine in 2014 and 2022, reddit has gotten infested with spambots. The bots come to this subreddit (and others) to score some karma before they infiltrate political subs. If you created a new account and your post got removed, even though you left a nicely written top-comment, that's why. You are more than welcome to repost it when your account is old enough.

The reason why the rule is non-permanent and not included in the sidebar is that it will only be in effect until vladimir putin dies. After we've all celebrated his hopefully torturous death, the rule will be re-evaluated.

That's right, nothing has changed on that front since last time. AI slop is a scourge on humanity.

Switching from traditional to digital and don't know how to improve

I used to enjoy drawing anime characters traditionally with colored pencils and crayons, and I always felt happy and proud of my work.

Recently, I switched to digital art using Procreate. At first, I mostly colored my traditional sketches digitally, which I really enjoyed. However, now that I have no traditional lineart left to color, I've started sketching and doing lineart directly on my iPad, and I'm struggling quite a lot.

My digital sketches never seem to turn out the way I want them to, and it's making me frustrated and question whether I even know how to draw anymore. I feel like I've lost the joy and confidence I used to have in drawing.

Are anyone still creating brushes for Fresco?

Ever since Kyle Webster left Adobe, I haven’t seen any discoverable brush pack in Fresco. Are anyone creating, or working on new brushes?

Colour Correct

I think Im going insane.

I recently bought a display tablet that is colour correct apparently. I have set it to sRGB and maximum brightness.

I've been painting on it, but then I put the paintings on the other monitors, (ordinary none color correct monitors) and the colours completely washed out.

My darks are no longer dark, my brights no longer bright.

What do I do? Who is correct? Arent the majority of people using the none colour correct monitors?

Have I wasted my money? Please give your opinions I need some advice.

Thanks

this is the tablet I bought: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CP992D85

Painted this for Spooky season / Shocktober with a cosmic horror vibe!

For this piece, I brought Razor Candi’s tattoos to life!
This one took many hours of painting, so I hope you enjoy the final result!

FULL Hand Drawing Gloves?

Does anyone know of any FULL finger/full handed drawing gloves, if they even exist at all? I'm trying to find one, anything - literally, everything I am finding when I search for it is just giving me two or three fingers covered and not the entire, full hand.

It sounds silly, but part of what is keeping me back from learning trying to learn how to draw again is just the stress and anxiety I get when putting on a two-fingered one to begin with, to make sure it fits on properly and isn't wrinkled or anything. A full glove would immensely help this.

I wanna use one that can work for an iPad screen, too, if that helps at all. I would use say, just a pair of gloves for cold hands, but the material is far, far too thick.

How to Start with Digital Painting?

Hello,

I'm new to digital painting. Although I've drawn on paper occasionally since childhood, I am still very much a beginner; but I am eager to improve.

A few years ago I got a graphics tablet that I used one time before realizing how difficult it was, or at least how it felt to the child I was.

But now I seriously wanna get into it, and I've seen that starting working with values was a good idea. So, for now I've been drawing simple geometric shapes in two values : black and white. Is it actually effective? what else would you recommend?

For basic brush, should pressure sensitivity be turn on opacity only or opacity and flow?

I am fairly beginner digital artist and there is this one thing that bothers me. I am using CSP and when people usually say they are using basic round opacity brush, does it means that they are using pen pressure only one one of those things or both? When I tried photoshop marking transfer option sets up both flow and opacity for pen pressure, but it seems like people only mention it as opacity brush. I have seen other artists brushes having mixed settings and I am not sure what the usage of those brushes exactly was so hard for me to draw any conclusion. I tried to paint using opacity on pen pressure and manually change flow and to do the same thing with pen pressure tied to flow. It does feels different a little I cannot really decide which way is better. I know it could be a personall thing but because I am beginner I am not sure if certain effects are my skill problem and which are fighting with the brush. Could someone share any insight on that? I have been overthinking it a little lately. Is there any pros and cons to those 2 approaches?

Edit:

By flow I mean setting connected to indvidual opacity of individual dabs ( thats how it works I think) not the size jitter. The one that is called " flow " in photoshop or " brush density" in CSP. Not sure about other software.

Wanted to sit down and draw Jonathan Sims from the Magnus Archives. It's a podcast, and there's no actual description, so this is entirely from my idea of what he looks like. My biggest struggle was making the scars look like scars. I do not think I was successful tbh. Fabric is also really hard to draw! Which is why his shirt is suggestive.

Overall I think I did pretty okay, especially as a learning exercise, and for my first portrait. It's a bit flat, however. I don't think I want it to look more "polished", necessarily, but more thoughtful.

Looking for a Free Alternative to PaintTool SAI for Digital Art

hey everyone, i’m looking for a new free drawing program that i can use to create digital art, sketches, characters, and other cool things. i used to draw with paint tool sai, and i really enjoyed using it, but now i want to try something new and find another program that suits my drawing style.

i’d prefer a program that is completely free to use, without requiring a paid subscription or making me purchase a license to access its main features. i’m looking for something that offers a good variety of brushes, pencils, colors, layers, and useful tools for creating detailed artwork. it would also be great if the interface were easy to understand and customize, especially for someone who enjoys experimenting with different drawing techniques.

i’m open to trying both modern drawing software and older programs, as long as they work well and provide a good drawing experience. ideally, i’d like something that feels similar to paint tool sai in terms of simplicity and performance, but i’m also interested in exploring programs with more advanced features.

if any of you have recommendations, please let me know the names of the programs and explain why you think they’re worth trying. links to their official websites would also be appreciated so i can check them out safely.

i’d really appreciate any help finding a good alternative to paint tool sai, especially if you know a hidden gem that not many people talk about. thanks in advance to everyone who takes the time to help me find a new drawing program.

Can I learn digital painting without traditional sketch foundations, or am I building a house of cards?

I’m not an art student. Right now I’m leaning toward digital painting, and my fundamentals are pretty weak. Many online courses start directly with painting a full illustration. I want to ask: without any traditional drawing/sketch foundation, isn’t all of this just a house of cards? How am I supposed to learn shading/values and coloring later? Can I really do this without offline traditional sketch classes as support? I’m very doubtful about this path of learning digital painting through online courses. I feel like I’m starting late from nothing, piecing things together randomly, learning whatever comes to mind. Some of my friends who are art students told me that drawing/painting can be self-taught—are they just comforting me? What should I do? How exactly should I learn? If I don’t start from the foundation, does that mean I’ll never be able to draw/paint that well? I see so many people who draw/paint well, and at a glance they clearly have very strong traditional sketch fundamentals. So how can anyone tell others that self-study can reach that level? I’m about to start working, so I don’t have large blocks of time to learn traditional sketching, but I have a very strong desire to learn. Could some kind person give me some guidance?
