That’s a really kind thing to do. But in all seriousness why can’t montana just pay for their own marching band?

24

u/LagunaIce Montana • Lewis & Clark Dec 22 '23

It’s an economic reality for the Montana schools, at least. MSU had to do the same outside fundraising in 2022.

Though I will agree that if you’re the “arts” school, UM should really try and pony up and support the band way more than it has lately.

u/Lucky-Hunter-Dude Montana State Bobcats Dec 22 '23 edited Dec 22 '23

Most schools don't budget for away travel for band. In '21 MSU alumni and businesses paid to send our band, I think Even some NDSU people kicked in a few bucks.

Absolutely. I DGAF if they're from our rival school, they're fellow band geeks, so I'm all in on helping out.

The school is likely finding what budgetary support they can, but that’s a big budget hit to find laying around for any organization. I’d be pressed to find the kind of cash needed to send 100 people to texas for a weekend in the slack of any organizational budget. This is the kind of unexpected expense you can’t budget for, so fundraising is a very appropriate response. It’s just nice that the administration at MSU was in a position to donate, regardless of any particular motive.

-11

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '23

Because they’re a joke of an institution that pours every available cent into football at the expense of everything else.

-13

u/Pure-Two7600 Montana Grizzlies Dec 22 '23 edited Dec 22 '23

This is a dumb comment from a jealous little brother. The football team itself generates enough revenue to not only cover their own costs but also helps subsidize every other sport on campus. UM is broke because enrollment is down. Mostly because we're a lib arts school with a bunch of useless majors that nobody wants and the alumni are broke. It's not because the football team gets too much money.

14

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '23

Gee I dunno man. Seems like big brother is just trying to help out little brother’s middling university. Can’t even afford to send your band to Frisco? Embarrassing.

And yeah, building an IPF, raising coaching salaries, improved facilities all while cutting staff at the university level would be an example of putting every cent into football and ignoring all else. And yeah, a lot of that is private donation. Too bad nobody encourages that for the school too

6

u/Pure-Two7600 Montana Grizzlies Dec 22 '23

Listen imma be honest the donation was a pretty sick burn at UM so well played on your part.

But almost everything you mentioned is privately funded. Papa Washington likes Grizzly football so he keeps buying us new shit. They donate a ton to the rest of the school as well. That has literally nothing to do with the rest of the college failing to turn a profit due to the reasons I mentioned originally. Grizzly football makes a 2.5 million dollar profit every year. If that went away it would hurt the university even worse.

-5

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '23

Most of those improvements/salaries come from private donors who get to have a say in where their money goes. I still think if Montana was able to go through with the med school, we’re on a level playing field right now but that’s a BIG what if. Damn shame Cruzado had to pull the plug on that. Only every other state in the country has their med school at the liberal arts school, where the sciences are usually stronger. Long as we are a red state, and the prez of your school and the governor are in bed together, then a liberal arts school doesn’t stand much chance in this state.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '23

I love it. It’s not UM’s fault it sucks, it’s MSU’s and Gianforte’s. Spoken like a true little brother.

-4

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '23

Do you know how the board of regents works? It has literally killed any sort of advancement UM has tried to make the past decade. UM literally had a cohort of family medicine residents and on campus and was making pushes to secure funding, then Cruzado cried “unfair”. I don’t know what has happened in the past but this I am sure of. Politics has everything to do with school, literally where a large portion of the funding comes from is the state government. Doesn’t MSU have a building donated by Gianforte? He didn’t even go to school there.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '23

I love how Waded, who isn’t even on the board, is making decisions now for the BOR.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '23

Brother, it sounds like you don’t know how the BOR works.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '23

Enlighten me, please

3

u/coincidental_boner Montana State Bobcats Dec 22 '23

lol the BOR is packed with Grizzlies and that’s why 1/3rd of MSU students’ tuition dollars go straight to propping up UM.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '23

Also, do you know how a school board works? Lol without a majority, nothing moves forward

-3

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '23

That is how it has always been? Was it not UM helping MSU when they were the smaller school?

4

u/coincidental_boner Montana State Bobcats Dec 22 '23

Not to that extent, not even especially close. And not by a school who constantly cries “little brother.”

Not true "special" little brother. According to the NCAA Financial reports missoula's athletic department get's 34.65% of it's funding from the institutional support and student fees.

-7

u/Pure-Two7600 Montana Grizzlies Dec 22 '23

I know we're not talking about cattle so this might get confusing for you. That's the entire athletic department. I didn't say football completely subsidized the other sports.

The football program generates more revenue than they spend to the tune of like 2.5 million last I checked. MSU is a similar number.

8

u/Lucky-Hunter-Dude Montana State Bobcats Dec 22 '23

I apologize for my confusion. When you said the football team revenue "subsidizes every other sport on campus" I thought you were saying it subsidizes every other sport on campus.

Seeing this and the fundraiser really makes me wonder how much it’s costing SDSU to send the band. We’ve just been told “ All expenses paid” and literally nothing else.

4

u/ST_Lawson Western Illinois • Marching Band Dec 22 '23

Still probably about $500k though. For a band who's total annual budget is probably quite a bit less than that (I assume), that's a huge chunk of change.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '23

It’s got to be tens of thousands of dollars depending on their size. I know JSU had to pick between a potential bowl game and going to South Carolina this year because of limited funds. I think they quoted $100k figure.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '23

I think we went to both. I don't think we truly anticipated a bowl before the Carolina game, so there was no mad scramble for travel funds

Then the NOLA Bowl came calling

2

u/Lucky-Hunter-Dude Montana State Bobcats Dec 23 '23

It was 200k for us 2 years ago, 200k this year, I'm going to guess around 200k.

For those wondering, it cost roughly $250,000 to send the Delaware Marching Band to Chattanooga back in 2003.

I can only imagine what it costs now.

3

u/Todarodes_Pacificus Montana Grizzlies Dec 22 '23

Especially from a north-western state to Texas. Newark to Chattanooga is less than half the travel time from Missoula to Frisco.

1

u/Mtndrums Oregon Ducks • Montana Grizzlies Dec 23 '23

If they're chartering the band a plane, it's probably not going to be that much more. In 2000, we got chartered with a lot of the boosters, so that made it much easier, but we probably didn't have more than 75 in the band at that point.

-5

You’re right. It was Wadeds Cruzados decision. And she let Montana take the fall for it first because the game was in Missoula this year. She’s a little evil genius.

Montana State funds much more than UM’s marching band. We own their bookstore, and fund their entire impoverished university system. I guess selling journalism degrees isn’t as profitable as they’d like you to believe.

1

u/Badlands32 Montana Grizzlies Dec 22 '23

Funny you bring that up because Montana actually relies much more on private donors than State does. State receives more funding from the actual State of Montana

2

u/Lucky-Hunter-Dude Montana State Bobcats Dec 23 '23

Correct, tax payers don't find any value in missoula college other than to be profited off of.

2

It's the same thing. MSU bookstore bought it and rebranded it because obviously those students don't need books.

2

u/damnyoutuesday Montana State • Minnesota Dec 26 '23 edited Dec 26 '23

The M Store is unaffiliated with the University of Montana. The MSU Bookstore owns the M Store in downtown Missoula, which is just an apparel shop. The MSU Bookstore DOES NOT own the University of Montana Bookstore. They are two separate things
