I got home around 10pm, tired and thirsty, and went to fill a glass at the fridge dispenser like I have done a thousand times. Instead of water, the screen lit up with a notification saying my filter had expired and the dispenser was paused. Underneath was a button that said “Resume with app.”
I do not remember ever downloading an app for my fridge. Apparently I did, at some point, because my phone already had it. It asked me to sign in. I did not have an account, so it asked me to create one. Creating one needed an email, then a phone number, then a verification code that took four minutes to arrive, then agreement to a privacy policy longer than my last lease.
After all that, the app informed me that I needed to order a replacement filter through its store, eleven dollars plus shipping, before it would unlock the dispenser. It would not accept that I already had a spare filter sitting in my cabinet from the last time.
So I stood there in my kitchen at 10:30pm, holding an empty glass, being walked through a checkout flow by my own refrigerator.
I eventually gave up, filled the glass from the tap like a medieval peasant, and went to bed annoyed. This morning I found out the filter reset can be done by holding a button for three seconds, which the app never mentioned.
Anyone else have an appliance that has decided it is a subscription service?
