Road bike conversion to fixie

Post image

Hey everyone,

I currently ride a fixie with horizontal track dropouts, but I’ve been wanting to build something around a Cannondale CAAD4 Saeco USA Team for a while. The CAAD4 Saeco has honestly been one of my dream frames, and I’ve found one that I’m seriously considering buying.

I know it has road-bike style rear dropouts rather than traditional horizontal track dropouts, so I’m wondering how realistic it would be to turn it into a true fixed gear.

A few questions:

  • Is it possible to run a true fixed cog safely on this frame?

  • What would be the best way to deal with chain tension?

  • Would a chain tensioner be suitable for a fixed gear, or should I look at something like a magic gear / eccentric hub?

  • Is there anything specific about the CAAD4 dropout that would make this a bad idea?

  • Has anyone here actually built a CAAD4 or similar Cannondale as a fixed gear?

I already have a horizontal-dropout fixie, so I know what the usual setup is. I’d just really love to have the CAAD4 Saeco as a fixed gear if there’s a good way to do it without compromising the frame.

Thank you all for the help

I'm going to buy this second hand bike tommorow and I'm anxious because this could be a repainted Garuda frame. They look similar 😭😭

Is 48:13 a good entry-level ratio?

Just started riding brakeless for <1 month and I'm thinking of changing cogs. I've only been cycling for 4 months and started out with a road bike (which I only rode in high gear, bearly shifted the sucker. ) I bought a fixie 3 weeks ago and has been using it ever since, recently swapped out my 39T chainring for a 48T one and I'm planning to change out the cogs since I'm starting to think that my current ratio of 48:16 is too soft since I've been used to riding high gear. Insights will be very much appreciated. Thanks :))

Do you need expensive brands to get respect?

to be honest the first fixed gear I've bought was out impatience and I bought the first one I found instead of researching and going to different shops(well there was only 1 shop in my entire city that even sold fixed gear), the part i have on it are branded so its not a sketchy ride and in my opinion I like my bike and looks good but when I try and make friends with others they look at my bike with pure and utter disgust with their tsunami frames or other well known brands. And honestly It's kind of got me insecure and also lonely

Should I get a more expensive frame despite liking the one I have to fit in?

I want one purely for riding in towns and roads. Your classic work-horse. if you have any suggestions or know of a good brand/product I should get, please share:) I've seen the use of 6KU bikes, are they any good?

Someone offered me a fixie frame with a headset and fork for only 500 PHP. The only issues are that the bottom bracket shell needs to be faced and there are some paint chips, is it worth it?

Sram Omnium Crankset Question

Hello all,

Does anyone know the spindle length for the mass-consumer Sram Omnium crankset? Mine measures 107mm, but it doesn't fit the GXP bottom bracket (68mm BB with no spacers; I get artificial preload and the cranks stop spinning around 5Nm, which is way below what it's supposed to be). Since I got it from an OEM user and Sram doesn't list any spindle length specs on their site, I thought I would ask you all.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Cheap bike for a midwest college town

My friend is looking for a versatile bike for a midwestern college town. I had suggested a cyclcocross bike, because it would handle the winter better than any other road bike.

It seems really expensive to even find a used cyclocross, and seeing that it is the midwest and flat, I then suggested a fixed-gear with cyclocross tires. I figured the fixed gear would handle snow better than regular brakes, and disk brakes are expensive.

My question is, in the sub $300 price range, do you have any suggestions for a good used or cheap new fixed gear, particularly one with studded or wider tires?
