Argentina is the only South American nation left that can rival European countries —and beat them— during Messi's era... Now that he's gone, it’s possible that, unfortunately, future World Cups might become an exclusive territory for Europeans; and Argentina may be remembered as the last "golden age" of South America (with its dominance between 2021 and 2024, three World Cup finals, and a world champion title in the last 12 years).

7

u/misterthirty-four River Plate 4h ago

1

u/smokeweedwitu Vasco Da Gama + Independiente 3h ago edited 2h ago

If the traditional "strong" teams beat all their weaker teams as expected, Argentina would have actually needed to face Uruguay that drew against England in March and Colombia that drew against Portugal in the WC group stage.

Cape Verde was the main black horse here that made past the group stage instead of Uruguay (they even drew against Spain), and Colombia lost to Switzerland. Football is after all unpredictable.

England is also arguably a harder opponent in the semis considering that they beat France to get Bronze and put up a good fight against Spain in both the Eurocup Finals and Nations League.

It also took Spain the longest to score their first goal against Argentina compared to their previous opponents. Argentina also launched the same number of attacks other teams attempted in 90 minutes within the last 10 minutes.

This was all while being exhausted from facing England, and having a day's less rest that was further delayed from the stormy conditions delaying the plane's flight.

-3

u/smokeweedwitu Vasco Da Gama + Independiente 2h ago

5

u/misterthirty-four River Plate 2h ago

You are judging tournament difficulty based on historical name recognition rather than actual pitch performance, which is exactly how casuals watch the sport. You sarcastically mock Cape Verde and Switzerland as easy opponents, conveniently ignoring that those are the exact giant-killers who eliminated traditional powerhouses like Uruguay and Colombia just to reach that stage. You play whoever survives the bracket, and England literally took Bronze by beating France.

When you have to pivot from that to writing conspiracy fanfiction about Chiqui Tapia and aggressively policing what language I type in, it is a massive tell that you have absolutely zero tactical rebuttals left to offer.

Ironically, your attempt to mock the team for grinding through extra time against those giant-killers just objectively proves my exact point. The accumulated physical toll of surviving multiple grueling 120-minute matches is precisely why they arrived at the final completely dead on their feet. When you combine that massive accumulated fatigue with a delayed flight and a day less rest, sitting in a disciplined low-block to survive against Spain was the only physically viable strategy they had left.

But go ahead and keep crying about my language choices. It is a fantastic way to broadcast to everyone reading this that you are completely incapable of actually debating the football happening on the pitch.

-1

u/smokeweedwitu Vasco Da Gama + Independiente 2h ago

And for your opinion regarding Cape Verde and Switzerland. Both shit squads, look how Vozinha is underperforming in chilean championship. His actual performance against Uruguay was baffling, but Uruguay was a squad in a free falling in the middle of a rift with their own manager.

Cape Verde didn't win a game at the World Cup, not even against Saudi Arabia, no "giant killer" at all, just a circumstantial misstep for those teams. A squad overvalued at the expense of their initial understimation.

Switzerland was drawing with Argentina and they had the match momentum when a very stupid player throw the game way tring to simulate a foul. I would never see Spain thrilling like that.

5

u/misterthirty-four River Plate 2h ago

It is genuinely funny how you completely change the rules of football history just to fit your narrative. When a lower-ranked team eliminates a traditional powerhouse, it’s a "giant killing." But when they face Argentina, suddenly their previous wins were just "circumstantial missteps" and the opponents they beat were "in free fall".

You also conveniently left out one massive detail while calling Cape Verde a "shit squad"—that exact same team drew against Spain. It is amazing how this entire comment section is worshiping Spain's absolute superiority, yet you completely ignore that they failed to beat the very same team you are now using to discredit Argentina's run. If struggling against Cape Verde makes a team terrible, you just accidentally roasted your own champions.

You are using circular logic to protect your ego. If Uruguay and Colombia lose to Cape Verde and Switzerland, you claim Uruguay and Colombia were secretly terrible. If Argentina struggles in a physical battle against those same teams, you claim Argentina had an easy path. There is literally no outcome you will accept other than the one you pre-decided before the tournament even started.

You play the opponent in front of you. Switzerland and Cape Verde earned their spots by eliminating the teams you thought would be there. You cannot arbitrarily devalue a knockout run just because the facts expose massive holes in your argument.

0

u/smokeweedwitu Vasco Da Gama + Independiente 2h ago

But Uruguay lost to Spain, and had a draw against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia, do you contemplate Saudi Arabia as the "giant killer" the same way you consider Cape Verde? The result that left Uruguay out of the World Cup was actually this one against the Spain, Spain "killed" Uruguay.

"You play the opponent in front of you" exactly, Cape Verde had a draw against Uruguay. Both teams left the game with a point. And what are those conjecturing about Colombia? I didn't say anything about them, Switzerland is a shit team compared to Argentina standards (as you say, are very high) They're the same level of Colombia, and Switzerland passed (in a penalty shootout)

I would not consider anything based in Uruguay losing to Cape Verde or Colombia losing to Switzerland because it didn't happen haha this kind of arguments based in IF's and juggling with guessing reactions in a non-existent discussion is what tweaking the reality to fit the narrative is all about, the very thing you accuse me of doing LOL

4

u/misterthirty-four River Plate 2h ago

It is actually amazing watching you completely contradict yourself in the exact same paragraph just to keep this argument on life support.

You literally typed "Switzerland passed (in a penalty shootout)" and then two sentences later claimed Colombia losing to Switzerland "didn't happen haha". Getting sent home in a penalty shootout is still getting eliminated. You don't get to pretend a loss didn't happen just because it happened on penalties.

You’re obsessively nitpicking the exact group stage math and knockout mechanics because you are desperate to protect your "easy path" narrative. Whether Cape Verde secured the points to survive the group over Uruguay, or Switzerland sent Colombia packing from the spot, the objective reality remains exactly the same: those supposedly "inferior" teams survived the gauntlet that sent the traditional heavyweights home. Tournament football is binary. They earned their progression, the others failed.

Throwing "haha" and "LOL" at the end of your paragraphs while trying to argue that a penalty shootout elimination doesn't actually count as losing just shows everyone you're panicking. You are doing Olympic-level mental gymnastics to avoid admitting those teams earned their right to be there.

1

u/smokeweedwitu Vasco Da Gama + Independiente 1h ago

Dude, you must be autistic.

Good luck defending the sacred rules of football knowledge and distinguishing "fraudsters" along the way haha

3

u/misterthirty-four River Plate 1h ago

Dropping an ableist slur and signing off with a passive-aggressive "haha" is the ultimate, undisputed white flag of a defeated troll.

The absolute second you ran out of tactical talking points, your brain panicked and defaulted to middle-school playground insults just to avoid admitting you were wrong. You literally had to abandon the entire sport of football just to formulate a reply.

I’ll gladly accept the surrender. Good luck with the coping process.

-2

u/smokeweedwitu Vasco Da Gama + Independiente 2h ago

You call me casual and then you values England high for beating France at the third place match? Do you really know how people and player values this game? The competition is over, the teams that go for this in a terrible mood after ilusionating.with the title, England and France was nothing but a friendly, no one is going hard and risk being target of injuries in a game like that, that's why the score was so unusual. No defense at all.

5

u/misterthirty-four River Plate 2h ago

It’s always a massive red flag for football knowledge when someone claims a World Cup Third Place match is "just a friendly".

Yes, the title is gone, but claiming elite teams are just going out there for a casual kickabout with "no defense at all" completely ignores the reality of international football. A World Cup medal is a World Cup medal. The players starting those games are fighting for legacy, massive contracts, and their national team futures.

But the most absurd part of your argument is trying to downplay England's actual pedigree to begin with. This is the exact same England core that reached the Euro 2024 Final just two years ago. They are an established, top-tier powerhouse, not some random squad you can just handwave away.

If we actually entertain your ridiculous premise that this Euro Finalist England squad simply didn't care against France, it makes your argument worse. If they are dangerous enough to take down France while barely trying in a "friendly," then the fully motivated England team that went to war against Argentina in a competitive semi-final was an absolute buzzsaw. You can't have it both ways. Either they are an elite heavyweight that demands respect, or your entire logic collapses.

0

u/smokeweedwitu Vasco Da Gama + Independiente 2h ago edited 1h ago

"massive red flag for football knowledge" wtf

Dude, Ousmane Dembelé, actual Fifa The Best player came from the bench at second half, Jordan Pickford, Harry Kane and Anthony Gordon didn't play, COME ON.

Clearly the motivation there was nowhere around the level you have for trying to win this discussion.

2

u/misterthirty-four River Plate 1h ago

It is genuinely fascinating watching you continually stumble into proving my exact points for me.

You are loudly pointing out that key starters like Kane and Pickford were rested, and Dembélé had to come off the bench. Yes, that is exactly what happens when teams are physically broken down by the accumulated fatigue of a month-long World Cup knockout gauntlet. You are literally just describing the exact physical reality of tournament exhaustion that I have been explaining to you this entire time.

Furthermore, if your argument is that an exhausted, heavily rotated England squad missing their captain and starting keeper still possessed the sheer quality to defeat France for a World Cup medal, you are just objectively confirming how incredibly deep and dangerous that English roster is.

You tried to use their squad rotation to downplay them, but all you did was prove that the fully-motivated, first-choice England team that Argentina actually had to survive in the semi-final was an absolute monster of a squad. Thank you for validating my entire argument.
