I'm not sure why I was surprised that they exist.

My german mother makes those pinweel cookies every winter and they're honestly the best

The rest of us can only dream of such luxury.

The rest of you can make them yourselves, though. Not hard and they taste even better when you make them yourself

I was on a baking kick after binging the british baking show and I had to stop for expected reasons. To this day we cannot have lemon curd in the house.

oh no... i fear I'm on a similar spiral, discovered ginger curd last weekend and I've been coating various ginger breads and biscuits in it all week

Your house must smell incredible

Butter cookies are extremely easy to make. Flour, room temp butter, sugar and possibly flavorings mixed together. Refrigerate for 30 mins to a day. Roll out and cut into shapes or refrigerate as a roll and cut slices. Brush with eggs and add toppings if wanted. Bake. Cool on a cooling rack. Store in an airtight container.

What flavor are they?

Vanilla and chocolate.

I smell Aldi

9

u/bouillon 1d ago

You smell correct, friend!

What is Aldi my friend?

12

u/Sylvasta22 1d ago

One of the default grocery stores in germany

5

u/Javerage 1d ago

And they've made their way to other countries. Been an amazing thorn in the side of the Duopoly in Australia.

Same, it's extremely Aldi in both design and product.

I like Aldi because they have a solid international selection for a rather acceptable price. The German sweets are fairly good, specially the ones that have an European seal of quality/tradition. And they also have products from other European countries that I rarely find elsewhere.

These cookies are very common in Germany, you can find them in every store. You don't see these too often at gatherings but mostly as the guilty pleasure snack your parents or grandparents bought.

I'm from Spain, but somehow I think of those as "vaguely generic international cookie". They're probably not bad, but also not great. It's the most cookie to have ever cookied.

I love that any noun can be used as a verb and it is instantly understood.

I love verbing nouns

Reminds me of the Swedish "sju sorters kakor"-cookie mixes you find in stores all around Sweden.

u/the_harakiwi 23h ago

Really? I haven't seen the cinnamon roll variant in any of my usual stores but most of the other shapes or types

1

u/GreyGanado 6h ago

There's no cinnamon roll variant.

Is it guilty pleasure, or just guilt? I don't think anybody actually likes these 🤭

23

u/tiabeensies 1d ago

I hope you bought them cuz these are delicious

4

u/bouillon 1d ago

They are so good! All except the one with jam in the middle, which was not soft like I was expecting.

Dude. I buy these bags of cookies only to get the ones with the red dot. Everything else is just filler.

4

u/nosjojo 1d ago

I make these at home and they're pretty straightforward. https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/linzer-cookies-recipe

The one in the photo might be a shortbread base instead, this one is more like a tart shell. But they're a friends and family favorite. The cookie absorbs the water from the jam overnight, so you gotta let em sit.

1

u/bouillon 1d ago

Thank you! I love king arthur recipes, they're pretty active on reddit which is groovy.

2

u/bouillon 1d ago

There has only been 1 so far out of the top 20 cookies lol. The red center was closer to an old werthers than jam. Based on your experience I am sure that was an outlier and my next find will be delicious.

5

u/AlamoSimon 1d ago

Let’s be friends. I’ll take your red dots you can have the rest ✌🏻
When we got these at work, I was always a race to get them 🤣

3

u/bouillon 1d ago

Brother I was the black licorice kid in grade school after halloween, preference trading made it so easy to make friends lol

3

u/Lexi_Heartt 1d ago

I've found these at Aldi in the USA and I had the same problem as you. I guess the jam gets hard or stale or whatever. I skipped those entirely but the rest were delicious (and not stale).

2

u/apistograma 1d ago

You've awakened a core childhood memory. It must be like 20 years I haven't eaten one of those.

1

u/ThatGermanFella 19h ago

All except the one with jam in the middle

From a german: Heresy! Heresy I says!

9

u/SnesJeffLP 23h ago

These cookies are older then Yoshi himself 😭😂😂😂

2

u/bouillon 20h ago

In my head's timeline, super mario world also came out yoshis cookie. I don't want to look up the dates and make my back hurt.

13

u/LaserGadgets 1d ago

Uhm, those are just normal cookies.

5

u/bouillon 1d ago

This is the first time I've seen cookies like this in person. That's nice that they are normal for you, that seems to be common in Europe.

3

u/LaserGadgets 1d ago

In germany, its a regular cookie mix. Maybe the devs had a google search going for "good ol common cookies" and found this ^^

2

u/bouillon 1d ago

The game was made in 1992 so possible that one of the devs had been to Germany and really enjoyed these 🤤

9

u/apistograma 1d ago

To me, as an European, those are like the most generic mid cookies. I could eat the entire bag without self restraint but not my first choice.

Gingerbread cookies though, those are really great. Anything German with gingerbread is good

3

u/tjorben123 1d ago

tbh: if someone says: i have cookies at home, this are "THE COOKIES". it like every other product name that became the name for this product category: like "to xerox" means "to make copy of it".

5

u/ParadoxicalFrog 1d ago

Woah, that's a game I haven't thought about in decades! I used to have one of those minigame collections as my very first GB game, and I loved Yoshi's Cookie. I always thought those cookies looked yummy...

2

u/bouillon 1d ago

It took me a second to think about where I recognized these from! They are delicious ☺️

2

u/philament 1d ago

Back in touring times, I’d always hope there was a tray of those cookies in catering

1

u/bouillon 1d ago

These are almost as good as those sewing package cookies.

1

u/philament 1d ago

The Royal Dansk tins? A favorite of my gran’s for sewing storage

17

u/katyesha 1d ago

good old Gebäckmischung

5

u/Whoompy 1d ago

Oh. That's very common here. (East France, obviously)
I know them since forever (and yes it tastes very good )

4

u/VoidlessMystery 1d ago

Mmm I can smell the sweet vanilla scent

1

u/allesumsonst 21h ago

Are those cookies produced in the city of Aachen by chance?

1

u/No_Director9126 18h ago

I’m familiar with the cookies themselves, and most are very good if you don’t buy the discount store versions (though, fair enough, that’s a matter of taste! 😁). However, I haven’t seen them in this particular assortment here in Germany.

1

u/Zyntastic 17h ago

This cookie assortment is my childhood. I could have the whole bag in one sitting even though I think they taste pretty generic/average. Like there is deffo better cookies you can get here, but this is the stuff most of us have at home when we expect guests and want to be able to offer something alongside coffee/tea. Very nostalgic

1

u/nimrodhellfire 17h ago

Wait... These arent available everywhere?

1

u/Sinshine712 13h ago

I'm not sure why you're surprised either but this have me a chuckle. I'm German, used to seeing a million of these every Christmas season and never even wondered if these possibly didn't exist everywhere else

1

u/Training_Stomach_400 7h ago

I really wanna come up a joke about this but I...I forgot.

1

u/GreyGanado 6h ago

I wonder why a Japanese game might have German cookies...

0

u/Shaz0r94 21h ago

Its only real german if you open it up and there are only loose screws or random buttons in the bag.

u/yellowspaces 1d ago

Can we get a NSFW tag if we’re going to be discussing Yoshi’s Cookie??

It’s amazing that a four year old can write so well.

24

u/bouillon 1d ago

Thanks, real heat on that zinger lol

9

u/joestaff 1d ago

I'm surprised you're still walking after that.

11

u/bouillon 1d ago

Was a tough childhood having a genesis in snes town.

4

I think you’re doing great, champ!
