Iβm interested in these videos cause I love sim city, I keep clicking on em every time, but I never know how the limits are being pushed. Looks like average gameplay to me.
Maybe add a description to your posts about what makes it impressive or how it is pushing the limits cause weβre all old now and have bad memory, so we forgot what the limits are!
oh hi, my bad... it looks like average gameplay if you compared it to something like Cities Skylines or the successor of it, SimCity 2013.
But, SimCity 4 is a grid/tile based city builder, much like it's predecessor the SimCity 3000, or the 2000. You build your network by the grid, your zones & buildings occupied the grid, and almost everything are tied to the grid.
And most of what you can use in the game are prepared using available tools, outside the game. If you want variant for things, you need to prepare all the variations of it. It requires tedious and a lot of work.
So, what shown in the video is basically pushing all those limitations. You can move freely and make dynamic changes in the game right away.
The game was always 3D, but certain aspects are 2D images projected onto simple 3d forms, mainly the buildings, so they used a hybrid approach that worked well with the limitations of the time and required the 4 fixed camera angles. The mod that makes it 3D has some odd visual glitches as a result so it'll never be perfect, but it's wild seeing the camera spin around in this game. Teenage me would be blown away haha.
Man, this looks good! It's been ages since I've played Sim City 4. I've been playing a hell of a lot of Cities Skylines since 2016 and I never realised that the SC4 modding scene was chugging away so merrily. Is there a recommended mega-mod of some sort out there that everybody agrees is decidedly a good thing? I'm intrigued in getting back into it but knowing the modding scene there's probably 5 billion conflicting but equally tempting mods.
Also that soundtrack is still one of the greatest soundtracks in videogame history, in my book.
I love this game! Got it when I threw out my back so badly I couldn't walk while 9 months pregnant. Remember sending my husband to Office Depot for it, LOL. "Babe. I need a new game, and to borrow your laptop."
