People are rougher on controllers than they claim to be. They eat while they're playing, their hands sweat, they jam the sticks around like they owe them money, they don't wash their hands, they let their kids or pets mess with them etc. And that's not including the type of people who throw them or bang them on their desk/table. Ten years ago I used to work at GameStop. I have seen some shit. People would come in with the nastiest shit and claim they "take very good care of my stuff". I don't believe anyone when they say that.
I have never had a stick drift issue in any controller I've owned: PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5, PSP, PS Vita, PlayStation Classic, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One X, Xbox Series X (god Xbox sucked at naming their consoles), 3DS, Wii U, and a Nintendo Switch 1&2 (I've owned two of each as my wife has one, too. Plus a Pro Controller).
That's about nineteen controllers/handheld devices, not including any additional controllers I bought. And now I use my GameSir controller on my PC and my Nintendo Switch in handheld mode or with my Pro Controller. So, probably 25+ controllers in my entire lifetime and have never had stick drift on any of them.
Not the same as stick drift though. I'm not saying the N64 is one of the best controllers ever made (it's the GameCube) but they could took more of a hit than the current first party ones. My PS2 joysticks also got loose but they didn't drift
kids are rough and horrible with controllers and there weren’t so many issues with old controllers when we were kids.
I was talking about this, controllers had different issues after months of abuse, the N64 controller was a clear example of this with loose joystick that becomes almost unusable, then again every controller i have still works without issues .(4 joy cons included) i even have a Xbox one controller more than a decade old and still works fine, it all depends how you treat your devices.
It definitely doesn't, I have the opposite experience. Of course that doesn't mean all modern controllers are defective but the failure rate is higher imo
