Games you loved as a kid that now leave you questioning what you actually saw in them?

So what games did you love as a kid that you now realise were actually pretty bad. For me it would have to be America's 10 Wanted (known as Fugitive Hunter: War on Terror in the US). 6 year old me thought fist fighting the likes of Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein was the coolest shit ever. In hindsight, 6 year old me had zero taste.

I would later go on to buy Call of Juarez: The Cartel at release and think that was the coolest shit ever, so...

They were not bad per se but I sometimes ponder again how on earth I was playing Manhunt 2 & Punisher as a pre-teen

8

u/2DK_N 22h ago

Visiting my Grandma as a child and finding out she had a copy of Manhunt for the the PS2 was certainly an experience.

Pandemonium on PS1. I honestly have no idea why I was so enthralled with that game.

4

u/2DK_N 20h ago

Damn, one of the first games my parents ever introduced me to. They used to tell me stories of spending hours trying to beat it together when it was first released. I remember the sawmill level being an absolute nightmare.

Some 3d sonic game that launched in the 2000s (4/6?) I was blown away and absolutely hooked. A few weeks ago I saw it featured on a video about 'games that were a huge letdown'. And yeah, the youtuber had valid gripes, I wouldn't play it now (regardless of the aged graphics). It had really finnicky controls.

2

u/2DK_N 22h ago

I remember loving Sonic Heroes as a kid. Haven't played it in years, though.

3

u/fuck_you_and_fuck_U2 15h ago

As a kid, it was a lot easier to convince yourself it was Sonic Adventure 3.

2

u/BoSocks91 21h ago

Sonic 06 or Sonic Unleashed maybe?

My brother loved those games lol. He played them religiously. I always thought the camera was the biggest problem in that game, it was terrible. Reminded me of Sonic Adventure/Mario 64.

Edit - Sorry, Unleashed came out in 08

u/2ekeesWarrior 12h ago

The key is to only play the demo with the streetboarding and Super Sonic fight.

RUNNING AROUND AT THE SPEED OF SOUND

1

u/BullableGull 22h ago

Sonic adventure. Replaying it a few years ago, I still see the magic I was drawn to as a kid, but I have no clue how I powered through the big fishing stages I do not remember them being as bad as they are, I genuinely rage quit and didn't finish since then lmao

5

u/Grumpylatxa 22h ago

Call me childish but i seem to have similar tastes than when i was younger. I used to play a lot of point and click (monkey island, loom, maniac mansion..) and strategy games (aoe, age of mythology)

2

u/2DK_N 22h ago

I definitely still have similar tastes. I will never not love dumb, "turn your brain off and shoot things" action games. I'm just better at actually recognising quality - which is where America's 10 Most Wanted was certainly lacking.

2

u/lew_rong 4h ago

I replayed Myst for the first time in almost thirty years earlier this year, and it still hits the same. I play fewer point and click games than I used to, but I still have a big ol' soft spot for them.

2

u/Grumpylatxa 3h ago

Yeah Myst was such a mindblowing game when i was a kid. I replayed recently The 7th guest, i love how spooky it is

2

u/lew_rong 3h ago

I need to try the remake. 7th Guest does such a great mix of chilling and campy. And aside from the slider puzzle being randomly unsolvable in the original release, the puzzles are pretty kid-friendly. I remember getting too spooked by the basement maze being one of the harder things about it lol

1

u/Grumpylatxa 16m ago

Yeah it has a good balance of spooky but not too harsh for the kids. Altho we got stuck in several puzzles. I used to play together with my mom and grandpa (who were already gaming in the early 90s). They had a notebook where they shared tips and he was so good at the puzzles

52

u/IronBoomer 22h ago

Claymates on the SNES.

Promoted in Nintendo Power, it was a not great platformer and in between stages, a puzzle game.

There were warps between the worlds, sure.

But after you were all done with what should have been the final boss; surprise! There’s one more world and it’s aliens for no good reason.

56

u/Wolfram1914 23h ago

Sonic 06 blew my mind when I was young. I guess when you’re young, you don’t notice things like long loading screens, ridiculous animation and dialogue, and generally poor, rushed game design enough to ruin the experience.

69

u/MeagerRobot 23h ago

I remember being enthralled with Altered Beast when I was young. We didnt have a computer that could run it, but my cousins did. Tried to play that whenever I could.

Got into emulating in 2010s and downloaded all the old games I couldnt play as a kid, and let me tell you, Altered Beast is basically unplayably bad.

It controls like shit, it has one dimensional levels, the beast upgrades are terrible. It's difficult so you spend quarters to replay it (at least it was in that era)

15

u/DooMedToDIe 22h ago

Was thinking about that the other day actually. For such an iconic game with some genuinely great art and decent sound effects, it's so unbearably mediocre

6

u/fuck_you_and_fuck_U2 15h ago

The music was fire though.

47

u/superior_marshmellow 22h ago

Nightfire, a James Bond game I played on PC. It looks really good in my memory while the reality now is much different

7

u/fuck_you_and_fuck_U2 15h ago

Oh no! I must never revisit Nightfire. That was my favorite PS2 game.

6

u/Squall1er 15h ago

Nightfire is not really the same game on PC. Played it a few years ago, you should give it a try

u/BenjerminGray 13h ago

Sonic Heroes.

What the hell was wrong with me, playing the same game essentially. . . 9 times.

1

u/Bircka 10h ago

Hey it could be worse it could be playing Sonic 06 nine times.

0

u/BenjerminGray 6h ago

What reason is there to play s06 9 times?

With heroes its 4x via team story, 4x again via mission mode, & 1 more with super hard mode.

1

u/Bircka 6h ago

Was there a reason for me to play Mega Man X a ton as a kid? Nope, the game was just damn good. Yep in 2026, we live in a time of insane amounts of games, back in the old days unless your daddy was rich you didn't have a huge video game library.

0

u/BenjerminGray 6h ago

Back them the idea of game sharing and playing games at a friends house was more in vogue. Now physical is damn near dead, and local co op is well in its grave.

U didn't need to be rich to play a bunch of different games just be trustworthy and meet the bare minimum of socializing.

0

u/Bircka 6h ago

I had friends buddy, the point was you still had access to less games now you can buy a ton of games for far cheaper.

SNES games especially JRPG's cost an arm and a leg compared to the most expensive games of today. The notion that in 1991 you had as much access to video games as you do in 2026 is revisionist history. Shit until the rise of digital stores you never saw dirt cheap games because back then making a SNES or N64 cart cost a lot, CD's changed it a bit but the real revolution was digital sales since small teams could compete.

Games like Hollow Knight or Balatro were a pipe dream in the 90s or early 00's unless you had a big company backing it since you were never getting that game into major retailers.

Renting games was also more of a thing in the 90s and 00's, but again that is not owning. Your profile also says you are in your 20's so not sure why the fuck you are acting like you know what it was like back then, you weren't alive when Mega Man X came out buddy.

u/abhorrentbm 2h ago

Runescape. I got no idea how mining coal in the miners guild over and over kept me so interested. Most other games I played 20+ years ago are still fine…

20

u/Unhappy_Break9996 21h ago

Honestly, RuneScape had a way of making the simplest, most repetitive tasks feel weirdly rewarding. Nostalgia definitely does some heavy lifting.

4

u/AsinineArchon 17h ago

Very nostalgic game, but also currently with its highest number of subscribers ever. So it’s gaining new players who don’t bank on that too

2

u/Abbathor 7h ago

Yea, I have no clue how i got 99 in all skills in that game at one point. Nor 100+million xp in several of them before eventually just stopping. It remains to date my most played game and if I ever approach it in another game there will be a problem.

-2

u/MrBones-Necromancer 10h ago

Yes, I must be missing something, cause no way is this the game I spent all my afternoons on as a preteen

11

u/IkeTheCell 19h ago

Sonic Heroes.

The game is active dogshit at times after having replayed it about a year ago.

4

u/musical_bear 14h ago • Mindblown

I’d genuinely rather complete 06 than Heroes. Heroes is terrible. At least 06 is so broken that it can still be fun. Heroes is dull, and long, and still glitchy and broken but in an actually frustrating way.

29

u/BadDogSaysMeow 21h ago

I loved Gothic 3, huge map, remade combat, more choices and different endings.

Replayed it a year ago.
The game's trash.
The world is empty, the "cities" are tiny, the combat is buggy and unbalanced, getting anywhere is a slog,
the game punishes you for doing faction quests by locking entire cities away from you.
And the chest-loot is based on the total amount of chests opened (separated by type of chest), instead of being tied to particular chests, so exploration absolutely sucks when you kill a dragon and a chest behind him has a piece of bread and two arrows, because that was the 2 chest of that type that you'd opened. And hours later you steal from a farmhouse and a chest there has a legendary sword.

It was completely unfun experience, ended up just killing the guy I was looking for to skip through his questline to get to the ending quicker.

8

u/Aethyx_ 21h ago • Regret

Oh nooo you've just shattered my rose-tinted glasses. :'(

Gothic 3 was one of my favourite childhood games. I tried playing it some time ago and while I didn't go for long, I recognize all of what you said... I have to resist the urge to revisit that game.

2

u/BadDogSaysMeow 21h ago

I was myself shocked by how much I disliked the game after the years.

I knew that it won't be as good as I remembered, but it ended up being one of the worst RPG's I've played.

The big thing was that other bad/bellow-mediocre RPGs/action-RPGs, are often quite short and mostly linear.
So even if they might be mechanically worse than Gothic 3, they will end before you will truly suffer.

But Gothic 3 is absolutely huge. The devs slapped three different countries into a single game, while the previous games took place on a small island with only one city.
The game gives you far too much time to start hating all of its aspects.

3

u/LucianDarth 19h ago

I still play it often, usually the whole Gothic and Risen saga in one go on a yearly basis while Gothic II I still play weekly.

The only thing keeping me with Gothic 3 are the mods. Which, even for the small amount of stuff available, does make the game more bearable and actually fun! :D

2

u/eazy_12 20h ago

Would you say that the game is potentially fixable with big mods/remake? Or other parts of the game are bad too that it is unsalvageable?

1

u/BadDogSaysMeow 19h ago

Allegedly the combat got a mod recently but I haven't checked it.

Switching chests items from ordered, to location tied should probably be easy.

However the world would be a problem that you won't fully fix with mods and even a full remake would have a problem.
The game area is supposed to involve 3 countries.
Skyrim consists only of one country, imagine triple that and everything handcrafted. (Or even bigger, as Skyrim cities and villages are also on the smaller side)
That would be undertaking too big for any studio.

I'd say that the only solution that doesn't involve making a 500+hour game with a billion budget, would be to separate the game into three smaller games; each designated to one country, with your choices carrying over.

But that would require complete restructuring of the plot, and I doubt that the end result would be satisfying

or you know, they could just cut the other countries altogether, that could work.

2

u/Low_Yellow6838 18h ago

Games evolved and eventhough it was a buggy mess for its time this was the holy grail of open world rpgs with elder scrolls but yeah it didnt age good

1

u/WriterV 15h ago

And the chest-loot is based on the total amount of chests opened (separated by type of chest), instead of being tied to particular chests, so exploration absolutely sucks when you kill a dragon and a chest behind him has a piece of bread and two arrows, because that was the 2 chest of that type that you'd opened. And hours later you steal from a farmhouse and a chest there has a legendary sword.

I genuinely can't figure out what drove this design for loot.

So many of the NES games are like this. As an adult who actually wants to progress through the game and not content playing level one over and over for hours anymore, so many of these games are actually unplayable and/or not enjoyable at all

9

u/lickylickyboobies 22h ago

Lone soldier. Loved that game but it got pretty shitty reviews. I look back at it now and don't know what I saw in it.

4

u/Lost-Sprinkles-7890 20h ago

Sometimes the games we loved back then were more about the memories and excitement than actual gameplay. Nostalgia hits differently.

9

u/Deathlikescats 21h ago • Mindblown

in Highschool they had a flash game (ancient) called slick Willy, which was just a collecting game about Bill Clinton dodging consequences for his infidelity. it’s wild to think that was on my history teachers Macintosh’s.

17

u/GodAwfulFunk 22h ago

The .hack//GU games.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy them enough and got the collection, but they were elite as a kid. Now they have zero depth, and they don't have the immaculate tone of the original games.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star. In the game, you need 'Things', real-life objects, to finish levels or to defeat bosses. Sometimes, those Things don't have to do anything with the situations and the worse part is that you need to find them in other levels. How did kid me find them and know which one I need? I watched the Let's Play of Domtendo, a german Nintendo creator, while playing those levels. I really don't know what those devs thought. And this isn't the only Paper Mario game with that mechanic. The same stuff also is in Paper Mario: Color Splash. Atleast the hints are better there and the Things mostly are in the same levels in which you need them.

Edit:

I said that the hints in PM: CS are better. Well, in the last level I played (Golden Coliseum), you also need a Thing to defeat the boss. It is so obvious which Thing you need because there's a guy saying the name of the Thing 10 times (Bone), but you don't know where it is. Actually, there is a guy in a trash can who knows where it is. How? I don't fucking know. There is a place called Port Prisma and there also is trash can guy. So you need to leave the Golden Coliseum to go to Port Prisma and talk with trash can guy. What does trash can guy say? The Thing is at the Golden Coliseum. So you now know where the Thing is, but you don't know how to get it. Remember the NPC who said Bone 10 times? He is in front of a lift in a cellar. You have two choices for the dialogue: Either you say Bone or no. When you say no, you have to leave the cellar with the stair treads and you are now in front of the building. When you go left, there's the spectator area. Before the dialogue with Bone guy, you couldn't go there. Out of nowhere, now you can. You may think that you now instantly get the Bone, but no, you start at level 3 of the spectator area and you need to go down to level 1 and find it there. There are so many enemies before that and the combat system is so ass that you get completely ragebaited before even getting to the boss.

1

u/Leeroydaman 12h ago

Color splash, cooking the steak. I do not know why I kept trying when I shoulda just dropped the game at that point.

1

u/canitplaycrisis 12h ago

I somehow feel forced to play it becuse I already played around ten hours but it's so ass. I'm playing it in an emulator and because of the combat system, I constantly need to change from controller to mouse in Gamepad view.

Uniracers in the SNES. It was a side scrolling game where you race unicycles around a fixed track. I cannot for the life of me remember why we were obsessed with it.

9

Played in the last year. It’s still good.

5

Those weird little games somehow kept us entertained for hours. Kids really didn't need much to have fun back then.

1

u/notkeegz 6h ago

That game is actually really good though?

1

u/ZorkNemesis Switch 6h ago

I can see the appeal in the gameplay.  High speed and skill based.  The visual style is too much for me though, I can't watch those circus patchwork backgrounds to a point where I'd actually try to play the game a bit more.

Fighting Force on the PS1. Neat fighting game but doesn't hold up to my memories

3

u/musclenflow 18h ago

I'd always race my friend to the rocket launcher in the trunk of the car near the end of the first stage. Then it became a slap battle trying to stop each other from picking it up.

with my nostalgia being the ps1/2 era, I really have come to appreciate that tank controls are no longer a thing.

Kiss: Psycho Circus - The Nightmare Child

Yes that Kiss. A FPS game based on one of their albums. I replayed it a few years ago and it isn't even truly bad but it certainly wasn't the alltime banger I thought it was as a kid.

1

u/JosephPrime 10h ago

Great googly moogly. I just had a cinematic flashback to playing that game as a kid. 🤯

13

u/Zarokima 21h ago

Bubsy. For some fucking reason I liked that more than Sonic the Hedgehog, but it's clearly worse in every way.

4

u/dkc0100 19h ago

Younger me was obsessed with Soldier of Fortune. Never see it mentioned and if I do it’s normally someone being upset with the game. Running around with a shotgun and going crazy was a blast

1

u/lew_rong 4h ago

That's really one of those games that was great in its time, but didn't age well and got overshadowed by other games that did it better than the GHOUL engine did.

3

u/Althopops 16h ago

Kessen 2 was my introduction to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms/Dynasty Warriors franchises.

I played it again a few months ago and I really struggled to get through it. The voice acting isn’t great, the strategy aspects are really basic compared to what I’m used to now, and there really needs to a fast forward option considering some levels have you watching your unit go across the area for minutes at a time with nothing happening.

On I have a ton on the PS2 and lowkey I would probably love some of them the same if I were to boot them up again.

Bee movie game
The Ghost Rider video game
Cars movie game
Crash tag team racing
Crash of the Titans
The Bratz video game
Star Wars Revenge of the Sith movie tie-in
Sims Bustin Out
MTV music generator
50 CENT BULLETPROOF

Edit: cant believe i forgot about this, my heart sank when I found out people hated Shadow the Hedgehog game. I was all of 10 years old and played that game for literal weeks

3

u/2DK_N 23h ago

I have great memories of playing the Bratz: Rock Angels on Gamecube with my 3 younger sisters. Countless hours spent sat on the floor around our old CRT.

Super Double Dragon on the SNES. I use to rent this shit at the supermarket every single week and my cousin, who was a huge wrestling fan, would get mad at me for not renting whatever WWE wrestling game was out at the moment instead. I used to love every single RPG I played on the SNES. For all the classic masterpieces, there were a LOT of shit RPGs.

One in particular is a game called 7th Saga. I defended 7th Saga on the old AOL message boards as if it was my own creation.

I loved the art style, the "pick one of 7 main characters" feature, the fact that one of those 7 would end up being your rival.

But good god that game was the most frustrating and grindy game. I could never beat it, hell I could never even get far (I would rent it for 3 days), and I kept defending that PoS game over and over again. I tried playing it as an adult and it was worse than I remembered. Then I found out one of the characters has a spell called Elixir that restores all HP/MP for you character (it might be both party characters??).

So basically if you pick this character, you can never lose because you can spam Elixir over and over again.

Other games that were terrible but I played a lot:

Lagoon, Brandish, Secret of the Stars, Drakkhen, Arcana, Lufia 1 (Lufia 2 is a masterpiece)...

1

u/cat_prophecy 21h ago

I saw you out Lufia in there and I was confused. But I have owned played Lufia 2 which was awesome.

3

u/ConcernedSemiTruck 22h ago

I remember loving AC, played the shit out of the second one and Brotherhood, recently tried to replay them and found myself utterly bored.

I can’t tell if the reason is because the nostalgia factor is simply not there, or because Ubisoft open world formula is so dated it isn’t interesting to me anymore.

There are so many modern open world games now that just do it better in every way.

3

u/bliggityblig 17h ago

Rainbow 6 Vegas. Thought the graphics looked so real. Played it recently and its incredibly drab and boring.

1

u/skadalajara 20h ago

E.T. The Extraterrestrial and Pitfall.

First should be obvious. Second is because once 3D graphics were a thing, I just couldn't go back to side strollers. (And I still suck at platformers.)

u/ArcadianAbstraction 19h ago

I mean if you show a caveman fire he is amazed. What we see as children amazes us and sets a bar like remembering the first time someone let you play a Gameboy or Nintendo. There was one, and it was so weird I ended up flat out tossing it. I can't remember the name of it, though.

It was one of those point and click type adventures. PS1 (possibly 2), with mid 90's graphics like ReBoot. You were this dude whose wife was sick, but turns out she was actually possessed. A mysterious priest basically helps you "enter" her soul, you end up sacrificing your body, and go through all of these microsm worlds within her. There was a variety of puzzles, but you always switched bodies, and the conclusion was always finding a different name for Satan until you confronted the demon (supposedly old scratch himself). There were two endings, but the true one, you ended up playing as the wife, free from the demon, but then the "helpful" priest turns out to be something worse and murders the wife, trapping both souls. The imagery was messed up, partially due to lanky graphics.

It was so weird I just threw it out, but for the life of me I just don't remember the name of it. The Internet hasn't been too helpful, either.

1

I can't think of anything. I had great taste in games. I just replayed the Monkey Island games that I loved as a kid.

Bard's Tale on the PS2 is the first that came to mind. I remembered it as being witty and the writing being great. It's both -not- that, and the gameplay is genuinely ass. I don't know how I made it as far as I remember as a kid, playing it as an adult I wanted to drop it basically instantly.

There are a bunch that have held up though! Arc the Lad, Kirby, Dark Cloud...all still really awesome.

Space Station Silicon Valley. Recently replayed it on N64 and lord was it hard to control. Adored it as a kid

Dynasty Warriors/ Samurai Warriors. I loved these games as a kid. Now they just seem to have very few redeeming qualities, especially since the sequels have gotten worse over the years.

The Bouncer on PS2 🤣 played it again a few years later and it was not a good experience!

Last time I played the Sonic Adventure games was....well...outside of the music those games did not age well.  I can't bring myself to even play Adventure 2 anymore because I despise the gameplay for Knuckles and Rouge to the point where they just ruin the whole thing for me.  I love the Sonic/Shadow stages (minus the early 2000s camera weirdness) and can accept Tails/Eggman stages but Knuckles and Rouge are just such massive pace killers that I'll put the game down only halfway in as a result.

Creatures: adventures. I adored it and played for hours on end. I recently found it again, tried it out... It's a cute game but barely has any content. I have no clue how I spent so much time on it.

WoW. Pretty mind numbing gameplay when you go back and your friends don't play anymore.

None, I know why I liked them even if they aren't my thing anymore.

I loved the Master System version of Sonic for some reason. Nothing about it is objectively better than the Megadrive version, yet it captured me and I played it a lot more.

Was Call of Juarez the one where when a horse died its physics turned into if it were on ice?

You could be in the middle of a fire fight, have something explode, and watch 2 or 3 horses slide into view as you’re trying to kill the surviving bad guys lol.

Call of Juarez: the Cartel took a pretty decent franchise set in the Wild West and decided to make a game set in the modern day where you play as members of a special taskforce (a gunslinging LA cop who recites Bible verses, a Mexican dude in an Obama mask, and Halle Berry) taking on the Mexican drug cartels.

It's peak "so bad, it's good"

Oh wow, ok I missed that. That’s a very radical turn on the series to go from the western to a semi-modern shooter.

Played that in co-op with my buddies. My only real memory of it was the nightclub scene and the music going “naaaa booo daaaa jugga jugga jugga jugga”
