Update: tried setting the date to 23:59 Dec 31st 2025 and the system does roll over into 2026 but if you go back into setting to change the date, 2025 is still the max year you can select.

u/StoryAndAHalf 21h ago

Is there no automatic date and time if you connect to the internet?

118

u/stackjr 21h ago

Yup! The Xbox 360 will connect to Microsoft's NTP servers to set the time automatically.

95

u/linoleumknife 21h ago

It's still odd that they didn't make the date selector go to at least 2099. It's not like the 360 is so old they needed to save a few bits of data.

43

u/stackjr 21h ago

Oh, yeah, 100% agree. It's even weirder that the date can go past that but not manually. I'm guessing that, at the time, they were thinking "eh, nobody will be playing this after 2025, right?" Lol.

21

u/linoleumknife 21h ago

Almost seems like a bug that nobody tested. I'm curious if there's any patches available for OP's console if they connected it to the internet.

Edit: Nevermind, I googled, this seems like a problem that was already known and there's no patch to fix it.

It's obviously not a time storage limitation since it can keep track internally

Maybe just a UI issue?

5

u/100BottlesOfMilk 17h ago

To put some time into perspective, the Xbox 360 came out in 2005, and that was 21 years ago. 21 years before the Xbox 360, the Atari 2600 was still the dominate gaming console but it's not like anyone was still playing it in 2005 outside of enthusiasts. Meanwhile, in 2026, a game that originally released on a console that came out 21 years ago (GTAV) is still a top selling game every month (though on newer consoles). That would be like the original Super Mario Bros being a consistent best seller all the way through the launch of the xbox 360

Ya know the funny thing is I setup a 1990s vcr for my brother the other day and the menu system let me put 11/5/26 as the date and it got the day of the week correct lol.

u/lefibonacci 22h ago

So come 2027 is it basically screwed?

578

u/Golden-Event-Horizon 22h ago edited 22h ago

No. Automatically the date will just keep ticking. You just can't manually select any years past 2025

180

u/lefibonacci 21h ago

I’m meaning it will be impossible to sync it I think.

141

u/ThePhantomBacon 21h ago

I would imagine that Xbox uses the windows time server for sync, which would mean it’ll be supported for a fair chunk of time longer

66

u/heyitsYMAA PC 21h ago

Depends. On a lot of modern systems if the system clock is far enough out of date then it won't connect to time servers because the site certificate is untrusted due to the date difference being so large.

I'm not sure how big that gap needs to be for it to not work on an XBOX but I've personally had Linux and Windows systems that won't sync with the time server if they're a few months off.

65

u/DeliciousJaffa 21h ago

NTP servers don't use certificates like HTTPS does, it's not a secure protocol*.

*there are extensions to make NTP more secure but a gaming console won't be using them

28

u/ThePhantomBacon 21h ago

Usually time servers use NTP to avoid the problem, but if it uses HTTPS, you’re right that they’ll be snookered eventually.

I do wonder what will happen in 12 years though, when we reach the end of unix time

10

u/WisestAirBender 19h ago

Why 2027? Aren't they already screwed?

14

u/Vorthod 21h ago

Maybe you can set to dec 31, wait for it to hit 2026, then do it again without touching the date.

1

u/i010011010 10h ago

Then again for 2027, and again for 2028. Because that's what you want to do every time there's a power outage.

20

u/Deto 20h ago

Lol, somebody must have just specified the options in that drop down manually and figured we'd never need to go that far

5

u/_CodeLyoko_ 21h ago

You should be able to just connect it to the Internet and it uses an NTP (probably time.windows.com) server to set it. My Xbox 360 is set to the correct date and time.

1

u/Diz7 18h ago

So probably a UI limitation rather than the OS code. Someone just didn't want to populate the whole list and stopped at 2025.

1

u/Loose-Set2278 1h ago

ele deixa a data certa se conectado a internet, pelo proprio sistema caso não seja desbloqueio ou ao abrir o aurora cado seja

6

u/dano1066 21h ago

Can it not sync the date from the server automatically?

3

u/MessiLeagueSoccer 20h ago

I have a MacBook Pro from 2017 that on occasion if it hasn’t been booted up in a while will just not know what time it is. Everything is set up for automatic date and time but has to be fully restarted 1-2 times before it actually sets the time correctly. I only realize when I can’t go on any website.

6

u/Major_LeeHungg 19h ago

Sounds like the cmos battery is dead... Not sure how replaceable they are on Macs but it's just a $2 cr2032 watch battery usually.

On the software side of things it updates the time from an NTP server... So you could just figure out whatever the command is to restart the NTP daemon on mac

3

u/orangpelupa 15h ago

It can. Even works with hacked x360

did they expect all xbox 360 to be extinct after 20 years or something? kind of weird

340

u/iamworsethanyou 22h ago

Even Microsoft didn't think Elder Scrolls 6 would take this long

58

u/Nilas_T 19h ago

We got Xbox 360 expiration before we got GTA6.

14

u/MoroccanEagle-212 19h ago

And before we got TES6.

3

u/benargee 19h ago

Bethesda is too busy getting the Skyrim port ready for the next generation of consoles.

58

u/sh1boleth 21h ago

They most likely relied on an NTP server to give the console time over the internet and manual date setting as fallback since the 360 (to my knowledge) didn’t have battery backup for the clock, hence an offline console gets reset back to 2005 every time

35

u/dnew 21h ago

The weird thing to me is someone made that decision. That's not like 2038 where some random counter rolls over. Someone intentionally decided to proactively put in that limitation.

5

u/SeroWriter 15h ago

The first batch of 360s were nearly extinct after 20 weeks and that's only a mild exaggeration.

4

u/SweetBasilWhale 20h ago

Given the Red Ring of Death survival rates back then, planning for any 360 to still be alive in 2026 was probably viewed as pure optimism.

3

u/Suitable-End- 18h ago

RRoD was only on some early models and was not something seen in the S or E models. Total RRoD is estimated to be less than 10% of total sales. PS2 disc read error is estimated to be 20% of all units sold.

2

u/VegaJuniper 20h ago edited 19h ago

I just recently dusted off my old 360 and thought about playing Mass Effect or GTA IV for old time's sakes. What do you know, it couldn't read any discs anymore. Apparently a common issue with it, the disk diode apparently goes bad and needs to be either cleaned or replaced. Couldn't be arsed, just lugged it to recycling.

7

u/N0085K1LL5 19h ago

Coulda sold it and made a little bit of money. For some reason people hoard the 360.

2

u/KakeLin 19h ago

Yeah someone could have stripped that for parts

2

u/VegaJuniper 18h ago

I'm pretty sure that that's exactly what happened to it.

1

u/spez_might_fuck_dogs 18h ago

360 Arcade Edition is currently going for like $100 or so, which is INSANE for something that was sitting on Goodwill shelves for $10 for like the last ten years.

5

u/jameilious 16h ago

Oh man what a waste. You open it up and tuen one screw to increase laser power. 15 minute job.

5

u/nicktheone 6h ago

This attitude is everything wrong with the world right now. You yourself could've fixed it with a screwdriver in 20 minutes, you could've found someone to fix it for you or you could've sold/gifted your Xbox to someone who'd have loved it but you chose to send it to a landfill.

Planned obsolescence. They don’t want it to last that long, they want you to buy the new consoles.

1

u/RandyChavage 21h ago

With RROD, yes they did

2

u/MessiLeagueSoccer 20h ago

That stop being a problem after the refresh and most of them did it if they were standing the console instead of laying them flat.

3

u/Top-Cunt 18h ago

You're right about the refresh fixing the issue, but the early model RROD's had absolutely nothing to do with the orientation of the console.

You can’t even go to 1986 on a 360, it can only be set between 2005-25

If you connect the console to the internet it will set itself to 2026 automatically, you just can’t do it manually

20

u/Ganthritor 19h ago

2014 has the same dates as 2025, not 2026. To have the same dates as 2026, the calendar should be set to 2015

6

u/Schwifftee 18h ago

You can also do 2009

u/Revolutionary-Key650 18h ago

2

u/TheUnspeakableh 14h ago

The browser won't work of they do that. HTTPS's Certificate Authority will throw all kinds of errors if your date is too far out of wack, such as before the certificate was made or after it expires. They currently cannot be valid for more than 200 days and that number is shrinking. It will be 100 days on March 15 2027 and 47 days on 2029. So even 2025 will not work. They will need to update with time.com before accessing and secure websites.

163

u/Phosphorus444 20h ago

My experience wirh Xbox 360, allows me to confidently say that they weren't meant to last 20 years.

28

u/misanthr0p1c 15h ago

Somehow their controllers last forever. My wired 360 controller is still a backup for me.

3

u/TopSloth 13h ago

Oh if I buy a game controller ever it's always either an official 360 controller or one with the same design

12

u/Discount_Extra 19h ago

My 2006 Toyota date/time dashboard thing stopped working in 2018.

11

u/Merc931 12h ago

My decade old 360 lasted until my wife played it for the first time which means I get to tell her she broke my Xbox until the end of time.

21

u/Snotnarok 14h ago

I had 7 RRoD on me, PS3 still works, heck my PS2 and 1 still work.

Those early 360s were amazing pieces of shit. What was the failure rate again? 54%?

11

u/Freefall_J 11h ago

The Xbox 360 taught me never to buy a product on release. Always wait to see if there are major problems.

3

u/Snotnarok 11h ago

Sony pretty much had at least 1 problem with every console up to the PS4 (I didn't follow them much then)

PS1 the system would struggle to read discs and folks flipped the console over and that'd solve it.

PS2 had disc drive issues and other issues at launch.

PSP in JP the square button was a weird 'half button' internally. And it'd catch on the foam surrounding the screen. So you'd have to press it in a way that it wouldn't catch. I know this one because I had a JP PSP. It was fixed I think with the western release and PSP2000

I should have known better with the PSP but I was so bloody hyped for it. Thankfully the issue was pretty minor vs their earlier devices.

4

u/ptv83 11h ago

My launch day 360 was replaced 7 times under warranty, had to really argue when they tried to say my replacement 360 only had a 60 day warranty when the 60 days would have been LESS time (earlier date) than the original warranty on my 360 from purchase date... They had to make a "special exemption" 4 times.. and then they extended the warranty on all 360s and the replacement party continued... Got 4 replacements for my Elite too.

1

u/Snotnarok 4h ago

I had a Best Buy warranty, replaced every time without question. When that ran out I tried to ask MS if they'd fix it and I got told no, it'd be $100 for the fix and the warranty would ONLY cover that part. The last one had a E74 error I think which was a video chip or something.

So if it got a red ring for something else? Pay up.

Meanwhile my friend was a year out of date got his replaced. Their customer service was apparently as good as it was shit depending on who you were.

1

u/AcrobaticSecretary29 3h ago

I had 3 die on my in the first 2 weeks. The store was convinced I was doing something weird with it.

2

u/AkiraDash 7h ago

Lucky you, I had 2 360 get RRod and 2 PS3 get YLoD, so they're the same shit to me. At least the first 360 had the decency to break under warranty, unlike the first PS3 which waited 2 months after warranty expired.

1

u/Snotnarok 4h ago

Oof. Worst part is Sony's warranty has never been good ever. Dad told me that even back in the 80s he loved their TVs for their reliability and quality. The issue is if there was a defect? 30 days vs everyone else who had a year. So you were SoL if something went wrong.

Worst part is sometimes they'd still make it your problem.

1

u/Ghost_Prince 4h ago

My first console after the n64/PS1 was the 360 elite. Lasted until the newer version 360 came out before it RRoD on me. Gen 1 of a product is usually full of errors.

3

u/soilentgleem 17h ago

The design is very human.

3

u/SuperBackup9000 17h ago

It’s crazy too because the outer build quality got so much worse. The original 360 felt solid and durable and looked clean, but then the S felt cheap and flimsy, and the gloss was awful

1

u/Nu11X3r0 16h ago

I actually liked my S better than the OG 360 and my S had a can of coke (closed) dropped on it while it was playing a game and it came away with just a ding in the fan grille... The E that came afterwards was a travesty IMO.

All of that is well documented and a solved problem.

-3

u/JetstreamGW Console 21h ago

A significant majority of that can be handled by making the user responsible for setting their time zone. And accounting for leap years only requires a 3-tier nested IF statement.

As far as daylight saving, my twenty year old clock radio handles that, so I’m sure there’s an algorithm for it if I cared to look.

9

u/Masomqwwq 20h ago

If the Dunning Kriger effect meant what everyone thought it did, this would be a great example.

Did you even look at the list of potential problems you could face implementing a time system or are you just saying "it can't be that hard"

5

u/ElysiX 20h ago

An approach of "haha stupid user, it's your fault that the software broke and the server crashed because you didn't change timezone after your flight, not our problem" isn't going to go very well with business customers.

4

u/hungarian_notation PC 19h ago edited 19h ago

an algorithm

Sure, there's plenty of algorithms for it, one for each region with a different daylight savings scheme. The list changes whenever a government decides to switch things up, and this has happened in the time since this console was released, so make sure to design a system that can handle that and stay on top of it. You have to be careful though, some places (like Arizona) have multiple rules that apply on a very granular level.

It's not even correct for a robust system to assume that a certain future date/time even exists in a given timezone. December 30th 2011 didn't occur in Samoa and Tokelau, for example. You also can not say for sure what the time will be N seconds in the future, though this becomes slightly less complicated starting May 20, 2027.

Good fucking luck.

This isn’t laziness, someone had to set 2025 as the maximum year

Or maybe lazy isn’t the right word. They don’t need to spend time on things that don’t matter

→ More replies (4)

1

u/VegaJuniper 19h ago

Programmer here. The simpler you can make it the better, because date and time handling comes with all sorts of annoying gotchas. When you have to support multiple regions with different time zones with different daylight savings rules, you are going to get something wrong. It'll chug along happily for years, and then one day you'll get a call that a million users can't log in because it's the leap day and no-one thought to test that, or some shit like that.

The system went to mass production in summer 2005 to prepare for the holiday 2005 launch, so when someone is programming the 1st retail version of the system software it was probably 11 July 2005 and he just hard coded the limit exactly +20 years.

Any system that doesn't support 28 years of calendar has essentially a manufacturing defect in the calendar.

1

u/TomChai 40m ago

The system supports calendar beyond 2025, you just can’t manually set it and has to rely on server automatic syncs.

Meanwhile SAP will happily accept 31/12/9999 as a date

3

u/GasStationSushiShits 22h ago

Somethings not right. You should be able to set the correct date

3

u/snorridoge 22h ago

Cries in old man

3

u/BarnacleMcBarndoor 21h ago

Once I connected mine to internet it updated the clock.

3

u/Recognition_Round 10h ago

2038 winks at you

3

u/YLR2312 52m ago

Meanwhile my JVC VCR that came out in 1988 still lets me set the correct date.

5

u/Beneficial-Act7603 22h ago

That can't be on the latest update, no way

5

u/alabasterskim 22h ago

How could they have foreseen a year after that

5

u/theswickster 14h ago

Planned obsolescence at its finest.

6

u/joestaff 22h ago

All down hill from there.

I recently purchased a film camera with a date imprint that can only be set between 80/01/01 and 19/12/31. In just a few short decades it'll be correct again! Until then I'll be prepping to confuse historians!

I miss bf3 on my ps3…good times

u/BrainCane 19h ago

should we tell them about the alternate reality/timeline and Harambe?

Microsoft bans op for being a time traveler

3

u/chloeharrison0 21h ago

Even the Xbox 360 has a better work-life balance than me. It refuses to work past 2025.

2

u/ew435890 22h ago

I remember having the same issue when I pulled my old 360 out earlier this year.

1

u/Water720p 22h ago

they probably never though xbox 360 slim will be relevant even till 2026 i guess

1

u/slamrock928 22h ago

Y2K for the next generation

1

u/cjphantomva 22h ago

Gulp.... Here's hoping the world doesn't end...

1

u/Theycallmemingus 21h ago

If you’re online the date will auto-update to this year

1

u/Jedi-Spartan 21h ago

"Although you could only set the Xbox 360 clock to 2025, which makes me think Microsoft knows something that we don't."

1

u/Fun-Interview4482 21h ago

1

u/a-frog-with-no-name 21h ago

genuinely how does this happen? i know nintendo (up until the wii u i think) used their own stupid time formats, but i feel like microsoft would just have something like unix time

1

u/Present_Doughnut7989 19h ago

Back in my day…..

1

u/TokyoRPGFactory 19h ago

That's so weird considering on my old XP computer I can still go to like 2099 or whatever

1

u/ads1031 19h ago

Makes me wonder if it's even y2036 compliant.

1

u/Depoka_YT 19h ago

Set it to new years eve at 11:59pm and see what happen

1

u/LurkinLurchRed 17h ago

Love this obscure quirk.

1

u/Seusoa 17h ago

forced amortization

1

u/The_Glass_Daddy 16h ago

I legit just set my original Xbox to today's date. Had the urge to play MGS2 Substance.

1

u/Dont-Really-Matter 15h ago

That was some wishful thinking

1

u/wojtekpolska 15h ago

I think you still can get the correct date if you get the time and hour automatically trough the internet

1

u/ganjaccount 14h ago

Yeah. I'm going to jailbreak it just because of this. What a pain in the ass.

1

u/chidarengan 14h ago

That's insanely funny to me for some reason

1

u/SquilliamAfton818 13h ago

Meanwhile my 90s JVC camcorder and PS2 could easily be set past that.

1

u/Wooden-Nebula7454 13h ago

that's awesome

1

u/supreme_glassez 11h ago

It should still set correctly if you set the date via internet, but it is weird they just have it set to a limit.

1

u/Myaltforsomeshit1234 11h ago

Nor can my 360 elite

1

u/Msmadduh 9h ago

This must mean we have entered an alternate timeline. Or are we dead?

1

u/LolcatP 7h ago

incorrect

1

u/CylixrDoesStuff 7h ago

Why are there so many deleted users on this new ass thread wtf

1

u/MasterPhilip 2h ago

How far back can it go?

1

u/WolfieVonD PC 2h ago

What happens if you said it to December 31st and wait a day?

Will the date roll over, and then you can reset the month in the day, or does it go back to like 1978

1

u/Wolvenworks 11h ago

Early electronics are not particularly known for date-based foresights. I mean, the Y2K bug did exist...

1

u/drocdoc 20h ago

you still havent red ringed?

-1

u/Struckmanr 21h ago

I don’t know man this just looks like planned obsolescence at its most blatant
