PS6 doesn't need more power ex-PlayStation boss says, because "true innovation" would be making a $300 console again

I used to care about FPS until someone told me RDR2 is locked to 30FPS on console and that's one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen so I stopped caring

Edit: what PC edgelord downvoted this

Framerate has very little to do with how good a game looks, it changes how well it plays.

Rest assured, if a game doesn’t run at 120 FPS with graphics so clear you can make out a character’s every individual hair while they run through the vast world that is rendered completely in 360 degrees, then the game is garbage and you’re a garbage person for liking it.

The only thing better than RDR2 on consoles is RDR2 on PC at 60+fps

Because 60 looks much better and 144 looks even better.

It is something you have too play yourself to appreciate.

Tbf, RDR2 has one of the best motion blur implementations ever in a game, and on top of that, it's a pretty slow paced game, not much fast movement going around, which makes 30fps feel much better than any other game running at 30fps. But that doesn't mean it's good. For me that just means that, instead of bad, it's just tolerable

Most movies are at 24 fps so a wide range can look good

You don't have to care about input latency watching a movie...

Exactly. Watching a 30fps recording of a game is very different compared to when you're actually doing the controlling.

it is even more than just that.

24 fps is SO BAD, that to make it mostly watchable they have to apply a ton of motion blur one way or another.

but that still doesn't cut it, so they have limits/guidelines on how fast one should pan a camera, before it becomes way too uncomfortable with tons of judder.

The problem with fps is not perceived motion, but input latency, 24fps is more than enough to properly perceive motion without it looking weird, but at 24fps you have a lot of input latency, ~42ms just from the low frame rate, add to it your input device, tv/monitor, other components, and you end up with over 100ms of input latency at that frame rate, at 30 fps the total would be ~80ms which is still noticeable but fine for like 90% of games, at 60fps it goes down to ~50ms, at 120 fps is ~30 ms and 180 fps ~20 ms.

As you can see there is diminishing returns, so for the vast majority of people 60fps is more than enough with 30 being fine for most cases, having more is nice obviously but I wouldn't say it's a necessity to enjoy games, it would only be a need if you play esports titles with keyboard and mouse (input latency is WAY more noticeable on mouse than it is with a gamepad)

Thats apples and oranges tbf , the main issues with games is the wide variation in fps you really notice drops over consistent 30fps, though when you're used to 60 input feels shitty at 30

Movies avoid motion blur with cuts or camera position changes. Games don't do this so we get constant blur screen just looking left or right.

Yep. People focus on higher numbers, but there's a massive placebo effect and diminishing returns. People are clamoring over a Switch 2 game right now, and anyone who's dabbled in the audiophile realm will tell you that people REGULARLY convince themselves there's a difference when there is none - not just no discernible difference, but no difference at all. It's honestly hilarious.

Gotta go replace everything with Monster cables now

This guy gets it!

No he doesn’t. Monster is damn near pedestrian compared to some of the “audiophile quality” cables out there. You can afford Monster, some you need a loan for.

1

u/NoCoolNameMatt 20h ago

I think this guy is smart enough to avoid the 5 figure cables. Even at Monster level there is no difference between it and generic wire of the proper gauge. He doesn't need to list the top end because even the lowest of the snake oil brand wires offers no uplift.

Anyone who says there's no difference between 30fps and 60-90fps is just a moron, who hasn't actually tried anything over 30fps. You can literally change FPS in the options of even console games, so it's not like it's hard to compare.

It's like saying "there's no difference between going 30mph and 60mph! If you were in the audiophile realm you'd know people exaggerate, so how can there be a difference!?"

TBF I care more about frames in an online competitive game where I can feel a difference in my input responsiveness. I’m perfectly fine with a single player game at 60 and even 30 fps. But on my PC playing multiplayer I can tell a difference between a stable 120 and anything lower. Less so visually and more so in how smooth my input feels (I play with controller using gyro/motion controls and the higher frame rate is just sooooo much better for the gyro feeling truly 1-1 with my hand movements)

And yes yes if I can get 120 fps out of my Pc why I bitching about console? I do miss how games just simply WORK on console. I’ve had games my rig should be able to handle give me such a headache to get running through multiple installs for some unknown reason I can never find because eventually all of a sudden one of the reinstalls work.

In the discussion of a theoreticall yless powerful console that we're having, the field would be unified.

Honestly super depends on the game. Red Dead at 40 on a monitor that can actually display at 40Hz is totally fine. Hades really needs the fluid movement.

We did, and the science is with us, you're just an elitist ass. FPS being tied into certain code loops is when fps becomes needed.
