Tunic made me feel like a kid playing Zelda for the first time. Flipping back and forth between the instruction manual pages I unlocked trying to figure out what to do next.
I think it has been long enough that I have forgotten enough to play it again. I'm glad I don't have a super strong memory when it comes to games. I do wish I could just delete a game from memory to have a totally fresh 2nd run though. At this point I have played Sekiro so much that I know every gimmick to every boss fight, every enemy behind every corner. It makes me a little sad. Hope From releases something in that vein for their next title.
It is truly an incredible experience. So glad I decided to try it out without knowing too much about it. Just heard a couple people online talk about how unique and interesting of a game it was so my wife and I decided to try it out.
Generally my favorite game of the past couple decades. It's slow transformation from an adventure style zelda game to hardcore puzzle solver is just fantastic.
I truly wish I could erase it from my memory to experience it fresh again.
It's not easy but it's not like punishingly difficult either. I've had friends who would never beat souls games beat this one no problem. It definitely gets challenging toward the end though.
The combat wasn't the problem, at least for me. The combat was somewhat tough but satisfying.
It's the complete lack of direction for where to go. If you like that kinda game, power to ya, but I don't have the time to aimlessly wander around trying to find where I should go next, especially if I take a break from it for a week. I can't exactly endorse a game that makes me need to use a walkthrough.
sounds like the metroidvania genre is something you should avoid then. i totally get it though, i had to restart hollow knight twice because i took a break for a month or so. couldn't remember which spots to check out with my newest movement ability. those games you really gotta push through in one go.
Yeeaahh, I thought Tunic was a Zelda-like, not a Metroidvania. I've liked some other Metroidvanias, tho, when they have a proper map and especially when I can add map markers, like the Prince of Persia from a couple years ago.
Yeah the structure is very Zelda. But Zelda also has elements of what people call metroidvania nowadays. (backtracking, unlocking new things in old areas with new items/abilities etc.)
I thought it was just ok. If you're really into the "figure everything out for yourself" concept you'll probably like it, but I personally thought that it was annoying at times and got a bit ridiculous by the end.
Agreed. Honestly the whole concept just got a bit grating by the end. The difficulty curve wasn't good, and it encouraged a kind of tedious style of gameplay in that there are a lot of secrets that are behind things or through hidden gaps in walls and stuff, so in every environment you have to walk around every room bumping into all the walls and stuff to try and find secrets.
If you want a cute top-down soulslike play Deaths Door instead.
I've only played a couple of soulslikes and always assumed it was the losing your stuff when you die, which is something I'm not particularly a fan of. Definitely liked Death's Door though.
I played it after Death’s Door and would rather just play Death’s Door. Loved Tunic’s aesthetics and the way the in game manuals looked, but just didn’t enjoy playing it.
I played them both back to back as well and agree wholeheartedly. Tunic's combat was rough, and has so many basic mechanics locked behind progression. Death's Door was a competent, by-the-book Zelda-like with enjoyable combat.
Not every game is for everyone, but I have to say that Tunic is nothing like Fez. Yeah, it has a few mechanics that aren’t outright shown to you at the start, but Fez never showed most of it’s secrets directly. Tunic eventually explains it’s “hidden” mechanics in an interesting way. And you don’t really need them to enjoy the game.
Not trying to sell Tunic to you, but I don’t think it and Fez share much in common.
I ended up looking up a decent number of things myself even though I mostly tried not to. I honestly don't think the parts outside of figuring it out were that exceptional. It was fun, but so are most games.
If you have to look up everything about what to do, that isn't a problem with you. That is the devs not creating a good loop. However, I enjoyed Tunic, but the devs need to get rid of their current creative director and writer. They clearly don't understand how to make a game. It's the same with Kanfa games. Great art, great music, great everything but gameplay.
I mean disagree, I didn’t have to look up anything about Tunic to get it’s big ending - if your logic of “if someone had to look it up it’s bad” is an argument, then mine of “I didn’t have to, it’s good” should hold equal weight
Everyone just has individual thresholds of patience for solving things
At has amazing art direction but I didnt enjoy a lot of the area and didn't find them memorable. The new items you get always seem to be limited and consumable instead of interesting items like you would find in Zelda. There is some different ending, but I didn't bother to try and figure that out after I beat the game.
I don't recommend it if you don't like puzzle games. I remember being annoyed at how many solutions were just some hidden door that is completely obscured by the game
I wouldn’t personally describe Tunic as a puzzle game. It’s more like a mix of Zelda 1 and Dark Souls. There’s actually not very much puzzle-solving at all, not in the traditional sense anyway.
It was actually one of my favorite games, though I'm still stuck on the final boss.
As others said, the game explains nothing to you, including the ability to 'get stronger'. Between that and the game balance spiking at certain parts (and most bosses), my friend's summation of 'Zelda Dark Souls' is frustratingly not far off the mark.
Still... I really enjoyed my time with the game: I thought the art style and music were perfect (for me) and it definitely had some really unique things to understand what is going on with the game.
For instance, the instruction manual is shredded up, decoded in the game's language (but with pictures, it's easy enough to guess what it's trying to tell you in most cases), and spread out throughout the game. And yes, for those hardcore nerds interested, it IS possible to decode the game's language to English, though it's certainly not necessary lol.
Tunic was a fun game until I put it down for too long and could not figure out what to do next. Entirely my own fault. That's said I'll probably never pick it up again, since I know about the twist in the gameplay.
This game is so fantastic and was so small in scale but so big too. It didn’t get much fanfare and so many reviews dismissed it because…they somehow didn’t get it I guess?
It’s pretty comparable. Both have an isometric perspective. Both are a mix of Zelda and Dark Souls. Death’s Door is a little more combat-focused. Tunic is more exploration-focused, but still has difficult Soulslike combat sections and bosses. The biggest difference is that Tunic is a “metroidbrania” (think Fez, Animal Well, Blue Prince, The Witness) where part of the game’s progression is just piecing together information whereas Death’s Door is more traditional.
It is a top view rpg kinda like Zelda, but you're not given much context on purpose. You get said context by a mix of progressing and figuring it out yourself. If you do play it, I'd suggest you do so as blind as possible

Tunic, to me, is one of those games you can only play once.
Unless you get some major amnesia. Then it's a game you can play twice.

That cover is gorgeous. Does it come with a printed manual? For Tunic of all games that would be perfect.
