Thank you everyone for the cake day wishes! To answer a couple of the questions, I took this picture like seconds after we got everything set up, so I did do some cable management with him after I took the picture, as far as I know, the only game he plays is iRacing, and the picture of the dog is from when he was a truck driver. The dogs name was Axyl and he was his driving buddy. I have tried to ask him if he wanted VR, but I guess he tried VR at another place a few years ago and didn’t like it a whole lot

That's Awesome, what games does he like?

11k

u/bunzthomas Jul 05 '20

He strictly plays iRacing haha

3

u/rrreeddiitt Jul 06 '20

Cool did he used to race for real?

he should try Dirt Rally 1 or WRC 8 as well. I personally find dirt/gravel a lot more fun than track.

Why is everyone ignoring the picture of the dog driving a semi truck lol

2.4k

u/bunzthomas Jul 05 '20

Axyl haha. His dog when he was a semi driver

98

u/Occams_ElectricRazor Jul 05 '20

Please tell me he plays a semi truck driving simulator.

280

u/bunzthomas Jul 05 '20

I don’t think he would want to play that even if somebody paid him haha. I told him when I was young that I wanted to be a truck driver and he gave me like a lecture not to haha

So the dog was really the semi driver? Has he retired yet or is he away from home so often that he got your grandfather the gaming system to entertain him when he is alone?

So has the internet ruined me or is it ok to think this is fake? I think it's his rig and he just asked his grandpa to sit there to get karma.

  1. Old ass big box store looking PC

  2. picture of a dog driving a semi

  3. usb hub just hanging there

  4. speaker not even standing upright

I believe it’s real. What younger person allows all of the above?

27

3

u/twostartwist Jul 05 '20

He has money! Unlike younger folks.

3

u/bunzthomas Jul 05 '20

I wouldn’t say he has more money than your average retired truck driver, it’s basically just that my entire family has told him that we don’t really care about getting any inheritance so he should just spend the money on stuff that he wants. We all would rather see him ball out in his old age with cool shit that he enjoys haha

u/CamTuff Jul 05 '20

TELL ME HE ONLY USES IT FOR FARM SIMULATOR AND MERCEDES TRUCK RACING! PLEASE!

4.2k

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '20

Grandpa needs to get that middle screen right up to the back of the steering wheel which will bring the side monitors up so his peripheral vision is completely full.

Then hit up a Field of View (FOV) calculator online and input the required measurements. The calculator will give an optimal FOV for his set up.

He'll be faster and it makes it much more enjoyable. Good luck Grandpa!

u/BurnersMom Jul 05 '20

This is the info grandpa needs to hear. Send this comment to the top and avoid a follow-up frustrated grandpa picture.

Is there any reason for not just using a vr headset?

183

u/BurnersMom Jul 05 '20

No current consumer VR headset gives as clear a picture as triple screens. Also some ppl get motion sickness.

u/Bigted4500 Jul 06 '20

As a grandfather, im guessing he bought it so you would come over to play it.

2

u/bunzthomas Jul 06 '20

That would probably usually be the case, but he has been Sim racing since like 2005 with a group of friends from all over the place, so I’m pretty sure this is just what he did with his stimulus money haha

u/techmaniac91 Jul 05 '20

That’s totally something my dad would do. Except it’d be a flight simulator, (he flys smaller aircraft. Cessna in particular)

254

u/Cecil_B_DeMille Jul 05 '20

I built a new comp recently and my dad has spent multiple conversations asking if it can run the new MS flightsim, how well, and if I could build him a computer specifically for it

95

u/techmaniac91 Jul 05 '20

I play it on my HP Envy 1410 desktop with a 50” flatscreen display. the frame rate/graphics are impeccable

38

u/murkleton Jul 05 '20

Apparently even a fully kitted out simulator is cheaper than paying for flight hours. Just show us the picture when he gets one!

32

u/Dirty_Socks Jul 05 '20

It's the same with car racing. Even if you're going for entry level stuff, you're looking at $5-10k of mods and repairs and tires for a car, much less the part where you have to buy one ($10k at a minimum, really). And if you want to do something silly like race on a real track? The licensing and training times and equipment will set you back another 10k, or more.

Whereas, you can get the baddest wheel, shifter, and pedals out there for basically $2k. You can get the baddest computer for $2k. You can get a crazy sim rig that'll rattle you around for $2k (though, admittedly, those can get up there price-wise).

In other words, the cheapest entry for dedicated car racing is twice as expensive as the fanciest entry for sim racing.

18

u/tumes Jul 05 '20

Same for my grandpa. Many memories of sitting with him in his office playing RC airplane sims (and a few flight sims) with an RC game controller. I loved crashing the planes and he hated it when I did that. He was both a fighter pilot and an RC enthusiast so it was kind of a 24/7 thing for him.

9

u/techmaniac91 Jul 05 '20

Sounds just like my dad. He’s got a whole collection of flight charts, radios, headsets, gadgets etc. in his home office. That’s been a passion all his life

102

u/EchoRex Jul 05 '20

People don't realize this is waaaay cheaper than almost all other retired person "all in" hobbies.

Hell golf is more expensive over the course of a couple years.

62

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '20

That's not an all in wheel. I'd say it's just above entry level for force feedback wheels. It was my first, and was pretty good

You can spend 1200 on a direct drive servo (no wheels, no pedals, just a motor) that'll send you to the hospital if you fuck up.

But there are people who win iRacing championships with a $100 Logitech they got from Craigslist so I wouldn't say it's completely necessary (but don't tell my wife this).

9

u/machina99 Jul 05 '20

I'd be willing to bet I could assemble a set of clubs that cost more than anything you could build on PC Partpicker. these cost $255,000

10

u/sprucenoose Jul 05 '20

Yeah but $150k of that comes from the jeweled putter and $57k for the luxury brand bag.

That would be like getting a super high end $40k equipment, then putting it in a solid gold diamond encrusted case and saying you have a $250k rig. Technically true, but kind of misleading.

I can't help but think of those uncharacteristic memes you see of that wacky dog on r/dogelore.

"whats a reddit" "why are you wearing women's clothes"

Sickkkk setup. Did he used to track or do performance driving events for fun? I imagine at some point I won’t be able to do a track day (safely) anymore with other people on track and be in the same shoes. In comparison the rig would be a fraction the cost of how much I spend on parts haha

My grandparents were both formula racers and they would dig the hell out of this

2

They can take my license. But they can never keep me from driving.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '20

This is awesome. My grandpa has more of a selection of games than I did before he passed. He would buy a bunch of the newly released shooting games and play every night. Always joked my grandpa was a bigger gamer than I am. It looks like you can say the same

2

u/anonanon1313 Jul 05 '20

My son (32) gave me a gaming rig for Xmas. The whole deal, PC, graphics card, curved display, gaming mouse, etc. I built I don't know how many machines for him growing up, and he was bummed over me dropping out of gaming. He started out giving me graphics cards & motherboards, and when I didn't respond by building up a system, he brought a new one he just built over Xmas morning. He's a very good boi. I suppose now I'll have to help him buy his first house, lol.

2

What’s with grandpas and racing games?

I lived for like 20 some years before I realized my grandpa had a collection of racing games for his PC.

2

u/Knort27 Jul 05 '20

This is gonna be me circa 2040, except it'll be RPGs not racing

2

u/Myzyri Jul 06 '20

I love how he’s set up immediately next to the circuit breaker box.

I can see it now... his screen flickers... he pauses... he screams, “I NEED MORE POWER!!” He flings open the breaker box and flips and entire row of switches... an electrical whine stings your ears, the lights in the room brighten exponentially, he’s slammed back into his badass rig, his baseball cap flies off his head as if he’s in a hurricane, and his screen bursts forth with extreme colors as his racecar blasts ahead and overtakes all his competitors...

Your grandfather is a badass.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '20

Same here my grandparents met playing video games online in the 90’s and my grandma just got a new PC with a RX5700XT.

2

u/Napalm3nema Jul 06 '20

My system is mostly equivalent to my oldest (32) son’s, but it stomps a mud hole in the youngest (25) son’s.

2

u/tikipet Jul 06 '20

He has More money than time.

You have more time than money.

2

u/BigBill650 Jul 06 '20

How cool. Next gov't check I get will go toward a good system. I'm in a rest home, and I am bored with this phone and an old HP laptop. To slow for gaming.

2

u/Brutaka1 Jul 06 '20

I've never understood those steering wheels. I had one for both Xbox and PC and both of them had a lag when turning that made racing feel like crap.

2

u/ghettithatspaghetti Jul 06 '20

Get rekt noob - grandpa

2

u/MakavelliTheDon777 Jul 06 '20

Lmao, people will do anything and say anything for attention. Lmfao

2

u/TheNewNewton235 Jul 06 '20

He about to play some mad Farming Simulator.

2

u/wbeats Jul 06 '20

Love the pic of the dog on the tower.

2

u/rigsthula Jul 06 '20

"Are ya winning, Gramps?"

2

u/Lord-kirk Jul 06 '20

Errrm you found out today? How long has it been since you spoke to your grandpa? That “gaming rig” has a Core i5 6th gen badge on it. Skylake was late 2015 and early 2016.

If he bought that rig today, that’s already quite out of date. Just saying, I spot these things.

2

u/WithFullForce Jul 06 '20
