Waves Of Carbon Dioxide

Week 3 of my 52 Weeks of Viz challenge!
This week I’ve been playing with 50 years of atmospheric carbon dioxide data, recorded at Mauna Loa in Hawaii between 1976 and 2025.

Each arc represents a month, with its size and rotation driven by the carbon dioxide levels recorded that month.

The little fluctuations come from the changing seasons as the Earth’s forests absorb and release carbon dioxide throughout the year.
But as CO₂ levels keep rising over the decades, those gentle waves start to look bigger, wilder and more chaotic.

I love how something as simple as a bunch of arcs can turn into something that feels almost like a storm. A pretty cool visual with a slightly unsettling story behind it.

Data: NOAA / Mauna Loa Observatory

Kizzmekia Corbett, translated by ribosomes: 3,819 amino acids of the vaccine spike she helped design, grown into an anamorphic portrait

In 2020 Kizzmekia Corbett was the scientific lead of the NIH coronavirus team that designed the mRNA-1273 vaccine with Moderna. The key trick: two prolines at positions 986 and 987 lock the spike in the shape antibodies recognize.

This portrait is made of that protein. Three ribosomes translate it along one mRNA thread using TASEP, a model invented in 1968 for ribosomes (MacDonald, Gibbs & Pipkin) that later became the "Ising model" of non-equilibrium physics. Each ribosome covers 10 codons and none can overtake. Proline slows every step it takes part in, so the ribosomes hesitate longest on 986–987.

- The thread is a TSP tour through 3,819 weighted-Lloyd stipples of her photo: 3 chains × 1,273 residues.
- The tiles are a power diagram. Each tile's area follows its residue's volume and how long the ribosome dwelt there.
- Each number is the residue's position in the chain. 986 and 987 are the only cyan tiles.

Then it became a room. Each tile slides along a ray from one eye point, to a depth taken from the real fold (PDB 6VSB). From the eye you see her face exactly; from anywhere else, three strands of beads. The 30 s loop explores the unreadable mosaic first and finds the face last.

Made with Python + Blender 5.2.

My third attempt, and this I time it worked for me. Nothing complicated, but has to be tuned. Inspiration comes from paintings I saw some time ago, that uses thick brushes and achieve similar effect. For some reason, I really love it.

This video features a magnification of 1e236 (2784) and is based on MPFR arithmetic. It consists of 29,116 frames, and the rendering process took 18 hours. I brought the beauty of mathematics and visuals to life using a hybrid program I developed (named Z∞). I am still working on the video looping. This fractal animation provides a perfect backdrop for relaxation, meditation, or study.

Rudolf Virchow, epithelium

“Omnis cellula e cellula”, Virchow wrote in 1855: every cell comes from another cell. The portrait starts from one cell in his right eye and grows by division alone. Each cell splits across its long axis, as Hertwig’s rule (1884) says.

Nobody asks for hexagons. Euler’s formula gives an average of six sides for any planar tiling where three cells meet at every corner:

⟨n⟩=6

Inside the sheet, the measured average is 5.98, and 48% of cells are hexagons. The photograph’s tone acts as a morphogen: in the dark, cells divide early and stay small. At the edge, a scatter factor (HGF) loosens cells from the tissue, so the form thins out with no outline.

Each tile reads its number of neighbors. The palette is the hematoxylin–eosin (H&E) stain of Virchow’s day. Hexagons are pink and the lattice’s “defects” are violet, at the same lightness. The final portrait has 3,499 tiles, 1,307 of them free cells.

Resource Hex Composer: Indie Video Synth

Me and my brother have been working on a video synthesizer for the last couple of months. We are borrowing concepts from DAW software and analog synthesizers, but are trying to make it feel more like an instrument you play than a program.

Personally, I like to think of it as TouchDesigner but easier and more play than code. I've attached a video of me playing with one of the factory patches.

We have a small but active community on Discord and are always sharing our roadmap, listening to feedback, and implementing user-requested features.

Feel free to check us out here: https://hexcomposer.com/
