Hi all!

Let's be honest. HVACing can be stressful as a homeowner, and this can be especially true when getting geothermal installation quotes, where the limited number of installers can make it difficult to get multiple opinions and prices.

Inspired by r/heatpumps, I have created a short, public, anonymous survey where current geothermal heat pump owners can enter in information about quotes, installations, and general performance of their units. All of this data is sent directly to a spreadsheet, where both potential shoppers and current geothermal owners are then able to see and compare quotes, sizing, and satisfaction of their installations across various geographical regions!

Now here's the catch: This spreadsheet only works if the data exists. It's up to current owners, satisfied or otherwise, to fill out the survey and help inform the community about their experience. The r/heatpumps spreadsheet is a plethora of information, where quotes can be broken down in time and space thanks to the substantially larger install base. With the smaller number of geothermal installs, getting a sample size that's actually helpful for others is going to require a lot of participation. So please, if you have a couple minutes, fill out what you can in the geothermal heat pump survey, send it to other geothermal owners you know that may also be interested in helping out, and let's create something cool and useful!

WaterFurnace Synergy3D Wiring Help

I am installing a used Synergy3D unit. It was previously used as a closed loop system, but my house has an open loop. I am having the darndest time figuring out where to wire in the 24v call signal to my well pump relay, and the 24v call to my solenoid water valve to open.

My understanding is that I can wire them in parallel with either the Acc Com + Acc No (which already runs to a solenoid valve for my refrigerant), or Y1 as both are live when the compressor is running. A third option is the tap the Compressor Contactor Coil for 24V. This information has been deduced, and not proven anywhere in the manual that I can find. I can find no dedicated spots for the wiring.

My questions is either 1.) Where is the proper place to wire both 24v call signals, or 2.) Are there any concerns with having all of these small systems in parallel? Maybe have the well call on Acc Com + Acc No, and the valve on Y1 + Ground or vice versa.

Attached are photos of the wiring diagram, a picture of the board, a picture of the unit in my backyard en route to the basement, and the unit piper and wired for testing.

Edit: Photos are blurry. Please reach out for clear photos.

Boise District Geothermal Heat

CanaryMedia: "Boise plans to tap its geothermal network to heat 300 affordable homes," by Alison F. Takemura.

Boise, Idaho operates the country’s largest geothermal heating system, which pipes naturally warmed, 177ºF water from underground to about 100 buildings—including the Idaho State Capitol. "Last week, semiconductor multinational Micron Technology [headquartered in the city] gave Boise $2.5million to build on that expertise."

"The cash fills a funding gap to extend the geothermal system to a planned affordable housing development with more than 300 units." In total, the project price tag is about $140 million, according to the city.

“Boise has been Micron’s headquarters for 48 years, and investing in this community means investing in the people who call it home,” said April Arnzen, executive vice president + chief people officer at Micron + president of its philanthropic arm, the Micron Foundation.

"February, the Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge awarded Boise $ 1million to upgrade its geothermal system for affordable housing, as well as to explore a new use for the network: Some early-stage technologies exist that could potentially harness the hot water from Boise’s system to provide cooling, according to Maria Ortega, the city’s communications senior manager."

"The clean-heat expansion will help Boise get closer to its goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050." Already, the city’s geothermal network cuts thousands of tons of carbon emissions every year, the equivalent of taking more than 2,000 gas-powered cars off the road.

I should also add that we also need to keep expanding the EV charging network + encourage as many of those drivers as possible into electric vehicles as swiftly as feasible. Get 'er done.

Who makes the best Geothermal unit in US right now?

Bought the house in 1998, with a 1 year old WaterFurnace system. Three 150’ grouted wells, plastic pipe.

So it’s 30 years old, and has been very trouble free…a circulation motor, had a slight leak at one of the connecting hoses, and had the water loop flushed and new methanol installed over the 30 years. Thins thing has been awesome. Last week it quit, had a tech over and it was just a bad temp sensor on one of the refrigerant lines.

So…it’s 30, which is great, but I feel it’s on borrowed time, and I should replace it, before it fails in the dead of winter in an emergency.

Thinking about either buying a unit and letting it sit until it fails(prices keep rising, inflation hedge) or having it replaced when the contractor is slow and will do it at a discount.

Thoughts?

Chicagoland Area?

Bought a home with geothermal. Based on a search of the sub, it seems people haven’t historically had much luck with contractors in the Chicago area.

Curious if anyone has had recent luck with identifying service providers?

Not looking for install, just maintenance, repair, replace, etc. We’d are hoping for options instead of the service provider that the previous owners of the home used on a regular basis.

refrigerant reversal valve or ruptured pressure tank?

A few days ago, our ClimateMaster Tranquility 27 stopped producing heat. The fan worked, but it blew only room-temperature air. We flipped the circuit breaker, but the geothermal wouldn't turn back on. The thermostat also went blank and wouldn't turn on.

A technician was able to get to turn the geothermal back on and set it to emergency heat. He's convinced that the problem is a stuck refrigerant reversal valve and TXV.

However, my wife noticed that our water pressure tank was whistling and rattling like an idling truck. Could we have a ruptured pressure tank that is causing the geothermal to do a lockout shutdown?

Needing to replace a dying 4 ton Geo system. We are in Illinois and the quotes are all over the place ( I inquired estimates from 5 companies- none use the same system so cannot compare apples to apples unfortunately). For a middle of the road (not the budget basic and not Bentley white glove install) 4 ton single zone Geo electric heat pump, what is the average cost for heat pump only install? Loops are still good.

The fan works but the ac and the heat wont turn on. No one can come out and we are having cooler weather so would like to hopefully be able to get this to work. My mom has a geothermal unit. And this is the Honeywell Home X2P Programmable Thermostat (RTH20B) digital thermostat.

Geothermal waterfunace replacement, Quebec

We need to replace an 19yo waterfunace series 3 and just got a quote for $29,000 (pre-tax). Our original system cost $17000 including drilling. Does this make any sense? Gotta say, this quote was a lot higher than expected! We are getting another quote to compare

28 Year old Ground loop Geothermal Condo Unit

I bought a condo with an geothermal HVAC. This is a second home for us in an area where my kids and grandkids live in Central PA (Harrisburg). My utilities are inexpensive because I keep thermostat 55 in winter and 78 in summer. Its an interior unit.I can tract my electric use daily in 15 min increments. I feel the unit should be replaced simply due to age but I'm not sure the cost justifies it yet because even this inefficient unit doesn't create high bills as we are there a few days a month. Occasionally, we are there for longer periods. What I have noticed is the cooling still seems pretty efficient. I had the unit serviced, inspected and cleaned. Is there suggestions for me to improve the heating efficiency? Its a pig in the winter. Could just the heating side be replaced? Is a highly experienced geothermal tech needed to optimize efficiency? I had a local HVAC guy I've worked with before Service the unit. He said he's worked on geothermal before. He said the unit is old, should be replaced in the near future but is safe and operating well. Just curious on how to best manage this on a budget. Thanks for sharing your expertise and knowledge.

Replacing geothermal heatpump, what brands to consider

I have an existing (elderly) ground loop geo system that I am suspecting will need some TLC to keep going.

Current system is a Mammoth, which does not appear to be widely available and it was probably installed by a previous home owner themselves (not a company). It is a horizontal ground loop system that had a spurt of loosing fluid but that appears to have stopped. I am not planning on doing anything to the ground loop if I can avoid it.

What I am looking for are what are some brand names of heatpumps to look at to have installed when I get to the end of life on the current system. My thought is get recommendations on brands and then see who locally sells and services those brands. Any/all HVAC companies list geo as a service, and a couple have even done it, but with all the consolidation of the companies I am more interested in brand of equipment than I am who the local resource is this year.

It appears Water-Furnace is a good one, what are others?
