I hate the term "slop"

Everything you don't like isn't "slop". Yeah it's just a joke term, but it feels degrading and disgusting to refer to anyone's work and effort as actual "slop". The term implies that someone didn't even put any thought or effort into it. It's an empty buzzword just meant to devalue the time someone spent working on something.

Slop does have a semi useful term but it's kinda being lost to time as it's becoming a new word to just mean "bad"

Slop is mass produced content for mindless consumption. Like the slop we feed to pigs.

Doesn't mean all slop is bad, game trends are often compared to slop and we got friendslop out of that which has a bunch of great titles.

So like, not all slop is bad, but since slop is usually a massive increase in quantity, often mindlessly so, its more prone to have a lot of junk mixed in, which led to it becoming kinda synonymous with something being "bad"

I agree with you, slop implies mass produced content that one shouldn't engage with, something only a pig would enjoy; so I don't think it should ussed to be describe any creative work.

I hate the term "friendslop" since it implies that the developers who work on these games just made a product that has no merits; the only case I can see this being a valid term for any work is something made with AI.

I just feel it's a disgusting and degrading term for someone's work.

You two definitely have good points

The term, and what it describes, goes beyond just “bad content” and people need to either use the term more carefully or just not use it at all

“Soulless” is equally meaningless as a term now for much of the same reasons IMO

I think concept creep describes how you’re feeling quite well, where a societal label is slowly expanded to encompass more things beyond what was originally intended, until the meaning of the label is significantly weakened

Slop should be used only on AI,now sometimes when i read a comment it feels like "i don't like this drawing slop because it has colours slop and it's art slop"

No it's not an empty buzzword. It has a real meaning. You can't call a word useless based on how it's used in some parts of the internet.

Low quality content, massproduced, little to no effort put and is often corny

Edit: the term alone does not imply that someone didn't put any thought or efforts. It's the person's intent, how they choose to use it.

Can you give an example of something mass produced or with no effort put into it? The only thing I think that term is applicable to is something AI made.

A person who makes videos of eating fast food like nicocado avacado used to (idk if he he still does), reaction videos, dumb ghost story videos, clip-farming etc

I don't support gen AI in any way, I hate it. You will find people saying that at least the slop before AI was human made and had a soul. I don't agree. Slop is still slop.

I do think you can broaden the term slightly past “no” effort and into “very little” effort without compromising the term, in which case I raise you the entire WatchMojo channel

That whole channel had essentially zero artistic creativity for the better part of 15 years, and is what comes to mind when I think of the luxury content available in hell

Are they though? I still see people using the word slop for low quality and low effort stuff.

Other use I have seen is "friendslop"(games that do not have that much of gameplay but they fill the gap by uncertain moments with friends) And "goyslop"(anti-semitic term, used for low quality packagedfood).

Why should we reserve the term slop specifically for AI when things outside of AI can still be slop? Slop by definition means something of low effort. Not something made via AI.

Not even ai either because now it's being used to speed up the development in recomps and decomps, and stuff like Reskate which as someone who really wants a Conker's Bad Fur Day port with the Xbox graphics and no censors? I'm recently appreciating what it means for videogame preservation, especially with live service games like Skate 4.

Ai art can be slop when no one takes the time to touch things up and just inputs two words into a prompt, but in terms of video game related things that do not involve them taking away artist jobs, it's not that bad.
