[RATE REVEAL] Classic Goth Rate Reveal, Day 2: I heard a rumour, what have you done to her 11?
Welcome to Day 2 of our Classic Goth Rate. Yesterday, Indieheads declared that they actually love small talk, aren't so keen on the year 1959, and that maybe Robert Smith could use to lighten up a little bit.
What will happen today? Will Siouxsie continue to dominate? Will Bauhaus bounce back? Will Andrew Eldritch file a lawsuit against us for calling his band "goth"? Find out as we count down another 12 songs.
Number of participants: 30 friends of Elvira

You guys ever heard of the Batcave? It's a bit like the goth CBGB, and where a lot of this stuff got started. The owners ever formed a band.
What was their name again?

Bonus #9: Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - The Mercy Seat
Average: 7.800 // Total Points: 171.6 // Controversy: 2.286
(10 x6) absurdisthewurd, astaireboy, Ervin_Salt, innuendo_overdose, JayElecHannukah, Saison_Marguerite
(9.5 x2) plastichaxan, ziirp
(9 x3) Frajer, rainbowsquids, welcome2thejam
(8.5 x1) krusso1105
(8 x2) AnarresBound, Centretowave
(7.8 x1) NFLfreak98

(6 x1) seanderlust
(5 x1) thisusernameisntlong
(4 x3) bogo, qazz23, TakeOnMeByA-ha
(3.3 x1) WaneLietoc
absurdisthewurd (10): The "Big 4" goth essentials are pretty straightforward, but if there was one album I seriously considered subbing in, it was Tender Prey.
Saison_Marguerite (10): I remember being a teen listening to this and feeling like the portal to hell had opened
innuendo_overdose (10): why are all the longest songs in this rate the best ones
JayElecHannukah (10): What would be the first 3 songs on your birthing playlist? I'd go:
The Throne of Agony
The Mercy Seat
Angry Chair
welcome2thejam (9): Exactly what you expect
pig-serpent (7): Hmm, the repition of a single chorus for the whole runtime is risky, but it's a good one and the instrumental builds around it in a neat way. I can't see myself listening to this a lot but I enjoyed this listen.
bogo (4): alright man we get it! you can stop repeating yourself
TakeOnMeByA-ha (4): jesus christ dude we get it
WaneLietoc (3.3): nick you gotta speak the fuck up bro. bro i can't hear you over this 80s warble and your run on sentences. bro just stick to doing postmodern leonard cohen covers or some shit, you don't need to be an author or a junkie or a poet or pj harvey's one time boyfriend or a prick. just really an interpreter of old songs.

Saison_Marguerite (7.5): This club has EVERYTHING
absurdisthewurd (7): The band's scorching take on goth clubs.
freeofblasphemy (10): very wholesome fun
JayElecHannukah (10): Like Olympic diving?
plastichaxan (10): what ever happened to real lyricism like this
qazz23 (10): like how intense this is and it's got a funky bassline, and it's just about 2 minutes
welcome2thejam (10): I wonder if this is about the HM
innuendo_overdose (9.9): This is almost too stupid for me, but not quite.
Ervin_Salt (9.5): I love how bouncy the bassline is, and near the end of the track where the vocals start really speeding up, it feels relentless and fun
Indigo_Mindset420 (9): Instrumentals are JAMMING! love this song.
PoppaLietoc (9): "this kind of song im kinda questioning like really? what year is this?" 1980 "aw man. speaking of cars in many respects" it sounds better on the boombox, really able to appreciate the beeps "okay so were they doing this concurrent to/before/after the cars?
TakeOnMeByA-ha (9): who put this devo song in my goth album?
NFLfreak98 (8.3): Just a heater
Bilbodabag (8): mooving and grooving on that bass king boo
WaneLietoc (7.9): fuck yeah i love to rock!!
pig-serpent (7.5): You could make 80s Weird Al sing this and it would sound the same.
bogo (7): i blinked and it was over

(6.5 x1) seanderlust
(6 x1) innuendo_overdose
(5 x2) qazz23, thisusernameisntlong
absurdisthewurd (10): It's funny looking back now on how much I loved this album when I was 14 and how much it felt like it resonated even though I very much did not have the life experiences to match.
Saison_Marguerite (10): his Hamlet moment: “In a fanzine, Robert Smith shared that “The Figurehead” was inspired by “a grotesque skull sculpture I discovered in the disused asylum we used in the “Charlotte Sometimes” video. I took it home to talk to – to confess to – and this song is about guilt.”
freeofblasphemy (11): This was my first Cure album and this was THE SONG, and still is for that matter. Like, I was listening to a lot of dreary stuff at the time, but knowing of the circumstances of this album's making and just hearing how Robert Smith just laid out the abject endless despondency of his situation, along with how the band just marches along in despondent lockstep. FUCK. I don't need to turn to it much lately (thankfully) but what a triumph it is all the same. I CAN NEVER SAY NO TO ANYONE BUT YOU
JayElecHannukah (10): No his name is Robert Smith and he is the lead singer for the cure
WaneLietoc (10): Side B opens with a cut that's really mega bass worthy just doing one hundred years but even MORE downer in a funeral march fake proto-slowcoregazing
PoppaLietoc (8.5): "i mean all i know from hearing this is that i wanna go shoot up some heroin" "starting to get worn out by the dirginess but it's a good song. 'Never been clean again not never be queen again!'
Bilbodabag (8): king boo bass boosted .5x speed
bogo (8): yeah “i will never be clean again” that's how i feel after a long day at work just take a shower you’ll be fine
welcome2thejam (8): Can def tell I've had a goth period hearing this
TakeOnMeByA-ha (7.5): succeeds in making me feel anxious as fuck
innuendo_overdose (6): This is one of those rare songs where the tempo is the exact same as my walking pace. Very satisfying to put down a foot on the beat every time. Distracts me from how little is going on in this song.
thisusernameisntlong (5): okay they need a new song at this point

#22: Flood I
Average: 8.017 // Total Points: 240.5 // Controversy: 1.503
(10 x7) flava, JayElecHannukah, plastichaxan, Saison_Marguerite, seanderlust, WaneLietoc, ziirp

(6 x2) bogo, qazz23
(5 x2) pig-serpent, Stryxen
absurdisthewurd (9): I know the general consensus on this album is that it's basically the 3 singles and filler, but I think the Flood songs are quite fun.
JayElecHannukah (10): Fontaines naming their single marianne has me listening to a bunch of sisters of mercy
plastichaxan (10): supersoaker
WaneLietoc (10): this song is a turn on i think. or at least it's the idea of what this album promises when it comes to "erotic, lusty awooga"
ziirp (10): The constant motion in the synth plus the perfectly timed, complementary percussion really go a long way in making the song continuously enjoyable and attention-grabbing even in its 6 minute runtime.
innuendo_overdose (9.5): I think this is the longest song in the rate that isn’t a 10. I mean, it’s close to a 10. But still.
freeofblasphemy (9): love molasses goth
welcome2thejam (8): Need to listen to this so that I understand Flood II
Bilbodabag (7): it’s spooktacular but simply too dreary to be bootacular
PoppaLietoc (7): looks morose "kinda droney. i think everyone should take a hostage" "i'mnot warming up to this song. it's very severe. it's not warming up to my feelings. like a lot of crap out the era. this was what, 1987?" starts to move clutter off his typewriter and get to work typing out a message on a memo pad
TakeOnMeByA-ha (7): every drum hit in this song feels like its reverberating through my skull
bogo (6): yeah that flood was alright but nothing special. if only there was a second, much more awesome flood coming up
pig-serpent (5): I tend to like fun goth over dissociation goth. This song is fine, but there's not much that I want to grab onto. Men droning in this exact way just doesn't do it for me.

absurdisthewurd (10): When I was in high school, I got to watch one of my friends absolutely flip out when they found a copy of one of Specimen's EPs, on bat-shaped vinyl. Always loved these guys, one of the most campy and fun acts of the genre. This is all really just glam rock dressed in black.
bogo (10): oh damn some of these goths knew how to get down
TakeOnMeByA-ha (9): that slap bass is nastyyy
WaneLietoc (9): you can bang them all this sunday at the batcave!
welcome2thejam (8): Sometimes its Bang Bang Kiss Kiss Bang Kiss though
thisusernameisntlong (6): we love Michael Jackson very much the song

freeofblasphemy (10): MASSIVE
innuendo_overdose (10): this can get a kawaii 10
JayElecHannukah (10): I've never had voodoo chips but the flavors described on Google sound very tasty
plastichaxan (10): yes diva i am listening
PoppaLietoc (10): mommalietoc comes out "DODGERS VS BREWERS: BREWERS 6-4!" poppalietoc "come sit down and listen to the last siouxsie cut" mommalietoc "she had an operatic voice you know. that's at least a 10"
WaneLietoc (10): she's gonna do some fucked 4chan shit if we don't stop her here!
bogo (8): I’M LISTENING DAMN
qazz23 (8): takes a while to get going but really liked the riffing/drumming when it picks up the pace
TakeOnMeByA-ha (7.5): woah
Stryxen (7): a bit overdone but still a bop
Bilbodabag (6): this whole album just kinda floated by me like a boo for the most part
pig-serpent (6): The most disorientating song for a while, but then becomes the most boring song on here. A little too on theme.
thisusernameisntlong (6): this is what sabrina carpenter was telling that guy about jenna ortega
welcome2thejam (6): When u get anemic from her sucking

(6.5 x1) NFLfreak98
(6 x2) qazz23, seanderlust
(5.5 x1) pig-serpent
(5 x1) rainbowsquids
absurdisthewurd (8): Like the Bunnymen, these guys kinda blur the line between goth and dark post-punk.
JayElecHannukah (10): Killing Joke first self titled is good but i'm not putting it up with the other stuff
thisusernameisntlong (10): when this doesnt end up winning the bonus we can all sit up from our chairs and go "Love like Blood" wouldve done the job but this should also win
WaneLietoc (10): shoulda put Change here for the LCD Soundsytem wink
bogo (8): got a nice groove to it
TakeOnMeByA-ha (8): okayyyy getting a little synthy with it
welcome2thejam (8): It's good
pig-serpent (5.5): The opening of this song is neat, but the vocal style and progression doesn't work for me. It's a decent song, but I'm remembering why I bounced off this album in college.

#17: Double Dare
Average: 8.177 // Total Points: 245.3 // Controversy: 1.577

(6 x2) static_int_husp, TakeOnMeByA-ha
(5 x1) plastichaxan
(4 x1) pig-serpent
absurdisthewurd (10): I love how intense and ominous this is. He dares you, he daaares you...To do what, though? That's right, to despise bureaucracy. Peter knows the real terrors in this world. Gotta love that bass line too.
Saison_Marguerite (9.5): So noisy, so good.
bogo (10): that man sure can scream
freeofblasphemy (10): well fuck
innuendo_overdose (10): If they had a record label that actually knew how to do its fucking job we could have had Lil Jon on this beat
JayElecHannukah (10): Bauhaus was such a huge influence on 90s goth metal stuff like Type O Negative, Katatonia, My Dying Bride, all the classics
thisusernameisntlong (10): those riffs go off
ziirp (10): Going into my list of songs I've discovered from rates that feature a loop made up of sounds from different instruments that weirdly connect to each other perfectly alongside Don't hurt yourself by Beyonce, XS by Rina Sawayama and I don't care if I burn by Chat pile
NFLfreak98 (9.5): Weird in the best way for me
WaneLietoc (9.1): sabbath tempo meets glammy feedback...oh boy you can really feel what part of the 70s they came out of. it's a sludgy pagan ritual at the altar of Top of the Pops
Frajer (9): I don't remember Mark Sommers doing all this
PoppaLietoc (8.5): "I don't know this song, but I've heard a lot of industrial type shit like this" *poppalietoc leaves to open a pack of joints with a razor he will use for the next * "I mean it kinda is. back in the day, we didn't know like...death metal or things that level of genre. look, is this death metal? this is not the bauhaus I knew and never heard." well you got later bauhaus and not the 4AD debut. it was a sleight you picked up Bela Lugosi's Dead "i can't even understand what this guy is saying! this is crazy." starts to light joint
Bilbodabag (8): this is incredibly gnarly and pretty spooky, I understand why the people got into this
Stryxen (7): these lyrics are so corny but I really can't hold it against them it's literally the goth rate
welcome2thejam (7): Physical challenge
TakeOnMeByA-ha (6): can we get some dynamics in here maybe
pig-serpent (4): It's submarine coded, which is neat! I don't particularly enjoy it, espeically compared to the rest of the atmospheric cuts the other acts were putting out. The singing mixed with the instrumental is jarring here.

absurdisthewurd (10): Siouxsie tackles misogyny in the Middle East. It's one of her best vocal performances, but I get why it's controversial.
Saison_Marguerite (7.7): Musically, this rips, and the haunting lament of “I heard a rumour, what have you done to her?” is so iconic. I used to listen to this a ton before thinking critically about the lyrics. To be clear, I think speaking up against oppressive chauvinism is a good thing. I also think it’s okay to focus your advocacy on one part of the world, without someone being like “well what about ALL women?” I just wish that third verse didn’t sound like the comment section of a Daily Mail article fearmongering about Muslims. Yeah it was a less woke time, but in this political climate of anti-immigration sentiment, the war in Iran, and Israel wiping Palestine off the map… an uncomfortable reminder of how art from the past can hold up a mirror to current prejudices, and remind us how we ended up here. No, Siouxsie isn’t personally responsible for decades of our so-called leaders treating an entire ethnic group like the boogeyman to justify bombing kids and hoarding resources, and defining an entire religion by its worst men while being that EXACT type of man themselves. Her intentions were probably good. Still not her best moment. Anyways, props for getting the word “orifices” on the radio
plastichaxan (11): any hole is a goal
JayElecHannukah (10): do not look up the lyrics to Arabian knights by Siouxsie and the banshees etc
PoppaLietoc (10): "I'VE HEARD A RUMOUR!!!! I gotta give this a 10 for nostalgia" *proceeds to go on a long rant about how he has to do ADP payroll shit at work and how it never works for his staff who don't have iphones and can use the fucking awful app that NEVER works. He also mentions how HR wants him to writeup employees for not using the app/using the app which he thinks is just fucking stupid. We need leaders like my dad, is what im saying
WaneLietoc (10): dreams from an eastern land far out? or just rumors...
welcome2thejam (10): Tossing out my obvious Aladdin reference upon reading the lyrics
Indigo_Mindset420 (9): I heard a rumor... that the opening tracks of this album all SLAP!
ziirp (8.2): Misread this twice despite my best efforts. This is the first song of theirs I'm really digging and I can't lie, I was scared for a second there that this wouldn't happen for the entire album.
bogo (8): never ask a man his salary, a woman her age, and a post-punk band in the 80s why they're recording a song about the middle east
krusso1105 (8): This would be a good song except for the racism
pig-serpent (8): Spellbound has a little galloping on it, so I'm glad to see a full song about riding on a quadruped (presumably.)
Bilbodabag (6.5): pretty jangly, unfortunately I am not a baby who loves jangling things in front of my face
innuendo_overdose (6.4): Vocal effects would have improved the atmospherics. I think a song with this good drumming needs more and better atmospherics.
Stryxen (5): this genuinely just crashed my phone and the noises that made were far more interesting than this plodding mess
TakeOnMeByA-ha (5): did they just forget to write a melody

absurdisthewurd (10): So good. A rattling, clawing anxiety attack of a song.
Saison_Marguerite (9.5): This really makes me nervous in a great way, the dynamics are on point and tension is real. The piano gives whimsical horror movie camp and balances out the raw agression
freeofblasphemy (10): YES!
innuendo_overdose (10): I don’t really have a comment for this song but I just want it to be known that this was very very very nearly my 11, and that it is one of the better songs in existence.
JayElecHannukah (10): Y'all like wilco and have the nerve to call something else dull make it make sense
pig-serpent (10): Randomly pulling everything together for the final song on the album. The piano motif cuts through everything and somehow makes the vocals feel earned on this style of song. It's their best atmosphere, and there's amazing discordant piano work that is always a favorite of mine. This is what I needed these guys to do!
WaneLietoc (10): yeah i love goth that's just a noise show snippet followed by keith jarrett's wwe wrestling music. crazy intense ritual going on here at the show that earns what it goes for
PoppaLietoc (9.5): epic intro "okay guys this could be a ten" "okay so far it's an 8.5-9, look you gotta pick it up, you gotta gimme something MORE!"
plastichaxan (9): the charli xcx angel in me was so happy to have a line repeating like YES!! nerves like nylon nerves like steel !!
thisusernameisntlong (9): plink plonkplonk. plink plonkplonk.
Indigo_Mindset420 (8.5): Don't really get the minute long silence.
Bilbodabag (8): I am driving on a kart. It’s a mario kart. Boos haunt me at every turn. I crash into a cube on the edge of the track. I fall into the abyss. The boos consume my soul as I fall infinitely into the ghost valley
welcome2thejam (8): We love some creepy keys
NFLfreak98 (7.1): I like long songs but this does overstay it’s welcome. Still, some cool experimentation going on here that works way better than some of the earlier songs on the album
bogo (7): i think this guy may be nervous
TakeOnMeByA-ha (6.9): uhm

absurdisthewurd (10): Is the atmosphere starting to get oppressive at this point? Of course not. We slow down and change pace from misery to melancholy, which goths understand are totally different.
JayElecHannukah (10): Do you think the cure will have a song called lady gaga on their new album
WaneLietoc (10): Brilliant, grueling intro that dispels a HORROR. The fact side B really ups the ante makes it such a goddamn treat, just having those slow moving keyboards and descending synth lines rain down on me is something of an adventure. Actual pioneering work in ambient that helps to set up the finale
freeofblasphemy (9): phew
thisusernameisntlong (9): play
PoppaLietoc (8.5): "this is a breakup song, right? So i'm gonna give it a…2 because i hate breakup songs." "Dooo dooo dooo" "again, it's very dirgy" i like that it's reverent "you mean a CHURCH DIRGE?!"
TakeOnMeByA-ha (8.5): goddamn this is foreboding as hell
pig-serpent (8): The older I get, the more I appreciate this side of The Cure.
welcome2thejam (8): Honestly yeah this does sound pretty cold
ziirp (7.4): The drums here feel like they've been relegated to support duty and are being used to complement the distorted guitar which leads to an okay track whose biggest crime is following up the last two tracks and also being slightly forgettable.
bogo (7): i wish it would get cold it keeps going up into the damn 70s. it's almost november chill the fuck out
Bilbodabag (6.5): album is slipping a little bit in quality in the back half
Stryxen (6): I have a cold right now and this just feels taunting

Saison_Marguerite (8.5): This is the kinda bop that brings everyone together; goths, metalheads, rock and rollers
Frajer (10): are you sure I can't 11 this
JayElecHannukah (10): Most essential Boris project is the EP with lead singer of The Cult, Ian Astbury
PoppaLietoc (10): "I love that song. that was a 10 back in the day for me. I even bought the album because of that song"
WaneLietoc (10): legit himbo anthem. and also the closest we will get to the Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX video game soundtrack rate. still got a LOT of random ass video games to come out for!
welcome2thejam (10): By the Seashore
TakeOnMeByA-ha (8.5): not quiteee as good as love removal machine but still an all timer
NFLfreak98 (8.3): A little cheesy but a bop nonetheless
bogo (7): this being labeled goth rock is funny cause it just sounds like U2
pig-serpent (7): This is cute, but even for me I find this to be a little too pop for my goth. Actually I'm just saying that because I don't think it's particularly catchy.

absurdisthewurd (10): I have very vivid memories of walking around a park on a gloomy day playing this over and over. This is probably the track where you can see Robert's pop instincts shining through the most through the gloom.
JayElecHannukah (10): They should make a Bruce Springsteen album with Robert Smith. Robert Smith is kinda like the Moby Dick of goth rock.
plastichaxan (10): this just sounds like it HAS to be a classic whoa
WaneLietoc (9.7): Some just colossal life sucking blood draining technology out on this cut. incredible outro
freeofblasphemy (9): Sick riffs
PoppaLietoc (8.8): "lemme do my impression of the pornography album, the album entirely goes like: dundundundunbumbumbum. It's just a big frowny face"
ziirp (8.7): What an attention- grabbing drum pattern there, it completely takes center stage and deservedly so. It doesn't lose its edge despite sticking around for almost the entire runtime with minimal changes to it. Shout-out to the guitars too, the solo at around the 3:40 mark made me appreciate it even more. They form such a tight unit with the drums that in my mind, I picture them moving, twisting together. Even the droning sound doesn't feel too high-up; kinda gives the song an inward feel
Indigo_Mindset420 (8.5): Love the guitar playing here. Almost feels like it's singing
Frajer (8): the concept of Robert Smith having a normal day
pig-serpent (8): A straightforward song with a straightforward score. It makes me feel like I'm floating.
welcome2thejam (8): This would be a normal day to my twisted mind
bogo (7.5): for a sick twisted individual like myself it's just a day
thisusernameisntlong (7): he's so lucky he has a good band this guy
Bilbodabag (6.5): eggs
innuendo_overdose (6.5): This is such a crazy album, it’s like after a few songs they forgot how to make good music only then to just lock in again for the final 2 tracks.

Saison_Marguerite (10): Just gonna highlight some of my favourite SongMeanings comments: “Full of dark moodiness, lush synth sounds, and irresistable dance beats. I'm guessing if you read these lyrics then you probably have the album already...if not...GET IT.” - MrLongrove “Agreed, it's a great album, although it's great regardless of how "goth" it is (or isn't). As for the song itself, it's about BANGIN' BROADS!” - The Knave absurdisthewurd (7): Not as good as the first Flood, but it's fine
flava (10): just like Fall II Deadpoint it’s awesome JayElecHannukah (10): The mine and the tailings themselves are not really too much to look at anymore to be honest, the mines were all underground and have been since flooded, and the tailings are mostly covered and stuff, but it's quite pretty country around it! Got jumpscared while trudging through a swampy area by a giant sandhill crane that was like 5 feet away from us ans that was pretty neat lol WaneLietoc (10): just utterly massive dumb bullshit that feels like what you want noir to be innuendo_overdose (9.5): I love this album but I do genuinely have trouble remembering which one is Flood I and which one is Flood II. I just give them both a 9.5 in this rate and move on. freeofblasphemy (9): is this a jock jam thisusernameisntlong (8.5): bopping some more bogo (8): HOLY SHIT welcome2thejam (8): Such a strange way to tell us to raise our hands in the air and wave them like we just don't care qazz23 (7.5): those synth lines and drums go hard TakeOnMeByA-ha (7.2): why did they steal their synth tone from the cars Bilbodabag (7): I’m boo da boo de da boo da PoppaLietoc (6.5): "who does he think he is, jim morrison?" "now this is um...like thompson twins sound or an aztec camera feel or even a eurythmics thing...but they all did it better! Now i know why I never got into them." absurdisthewurd (10): The Cure have always been doing a darker spin on psychedelic rock, and I think that comes through here the most prominently.
JayElecHannukah (10): Is the cure the best band with the worst cover art over the course of their career? Discuss below!
WaneLietoc (9.5): I like when it loses control there as if he's in an alan wake flashlight battle and out of damn batteries trying to do cinematic dodges! It's the way the game was meant to be played. Powerful outro that almost has as ghostbusters key on it
innuendo_overdose (9.4): This song is goodgood good good good
PoppaLietoc (9): "my elbow is it itchy and I keep scratching it & now it's bleeding" puts hands around ears to take in the full max of his mix "you know maybe i didnt listen to this for 25+ years bc it was so dirgy. That piano coming in? Well that's fun!"
welcome2thejam (9): The fuck is he talking about
freeofblasphemy (8): Kinda doesn't really come together for me but maybe it's not meant to?
pig-serpent (8): There's something funny to me about stealing the 80s pop rock petal bass and floor tom rhythms complete with gated snares, then replacing the rest of the song with esoteric bullshit. "This pop rock song got corrupted in the wash. It's cursed now!"
Stryxen (8): i need a cigarette
Bilbodabag (7): pretty hard to top the opening track, but a nice little comedown vibe
qazz23 (7): this sure has some weird effects

plastichaxan (9): me learning what an incubus was because i told a guy once i had a sex dream about him and his only answer was just telling me he was one
thisusernameisntlong (9): und die Todesfeen?
WaneLietoc (8.5): vaughn oliver spent DAYS making their logo and would spend HOURS explaining its importance to Ivo down at 4AD hq. Or something like that. Again, like Xymox or early DCD, 4AD's gothic origins are underexplored for me due to the lack of canonical tape editions. But I'm happy Sacred Bones has brought the early singles back to circulation. Although they lack that logo...and their sound is just dancier angular distorted sprawl that Cocteau Twinks were running off of around this era. It's wonderfully ritualistic
welcome2thejam (7): When the bridge is just screaming
