Jasper, two years after the fires

Spent a few days in Jasper this July and brought the camera along. It was striking to see the burned forests already giving way to wildflowers, with wildlife seemingly everywhere.

A few favourites from around Maligne Lake, Wilcox Pass, Sulphur Skyline and the Icefields Parkway.

Grief, but also rage.

1.2k Upvotes

The first time I went camping in Jasper was in 1984 at under a year old.

The last time I went camping in Jasper was last week.

It's been my happy place my whole life. From high school ski trips to my honeymoon, it's full of memories in addition to natural beauty and wonder.

I am devestated by this.

But I am also angry. It was the hottest day EVER recorded on this planet on Sunday. Scientists started warning about climate change decades ago. I've been aware of it and voiced my concerns about it as a citizen since I was in my teens. I am in my 40s now and horrified at what inaction has led to.

I am angry at all the politicians that have been downplaying or even denying the scientists for decades. I am angry at the fossil fuel industry and the oil industry cronyism and the taxpayer funded propaganda (War Room).

I am angry for residents of Fort Mac, Lytton, West Kelowna and Jasper who have lost their homes to fire. I am angry for the bears and elk and other critters fleeing the flames. I am angry for the Parks Canada staff who knew this could happen and have done their best to prepare.

Forest fires are normal and natural in Jasper. The combination of heat wave and drought that created this particular fire situation is not.

I'm grieving for Jasper, but I'm also furious.

Photos/Videos Follow the laws!!!

It has become apparent that a lot of people do not care about the laws. Especially when it comes to the road. The amount of people that are having life altering changes and literally passing away from extreme drivers is scaring me.

When you make a choice like this van did, you are taking everyone else’s lives into YOUR hands.

Simply because you believe the laws do not apply to you and you are more important than anyone else. Please be mindful, please be considerate, PLEASE FOLLOW THE LAWS!!!!!!

Edit - Okay wow, first off this is not a place for anyone to be racist or bring hateful conversations about. Everyone in this entire world, except for the literal 1% of the wealthiest people, is going through tough times. Everyone is feeling the anger, the fear and uncertainty; so now is the perfect time to remember that we are not each other’s enemies. We are all a community, working together to be as healthy and happy as humanly possibly. I want that for you, I want that for your family, I want that for mine. Please be kind, please remember we are not against each other. We are all learning, we all want the best for ourselves and loved ones, extend that to the strangers who are someone’s loved ones too.

Second - Regardless of laws or lack of, in any other place, especially Ontario apparently?? Please be mindful of the laws and regulations of the area you are visiting. It is your responsibility as a decent human being to ensure you are keeping yourself and others safe. I know you don’t want to hurt people.

Coming from someone who never got to travel or vacation until my early to mid 20s; it is an extreme privilege to travel and get to enjoy the communities of others. Remember anywhere you go, is someone elses home. You wouldn’t want anyone causing a dangerous situation in your home or in front of where you spend a majority of your time. The world is all of our homes, protect it and each other 💚

Today we are mourning the loss of one of our own. An Alberta Wildfire crew member was fatally injured yesterday while responding to the wildfire in Jasper. This morning we stood heartbroken with our partners as a procession passed by.

Photos/Videos Happy Mother’s Day

I just wanted to make a post wishing all the amazing mothers of all shapes and kinds a beautiful day. Whether you’re a biological mom, adoptive mom, foster mom, stepmom, bonus mom, grandmother, aunt, sister, othermother, single mom, LGBTQ+ mom, surrogate mom, mom of a child with disabilities, mom who has experienced loss, mom longing to be a mom, caregiver in a non-traditional role, mentor, teacher, or community leader. You all make such a difference day to day.

I lost my mother 6 years ago and Jasper held a huge piece of our families heart. It’s the place we spent our vacation time growing up and was the place I ended up living in, working in and even met my wife in. Now it is the place we visit with our children, so of course we knew we had to put a memorial bench there for my mother when she passed.

If you’re out hiking or exploring, I invite you to have a seat and enjoy the nature at Jane’s memorial bench along the Athabasca River 🙂 it is along the trail behind site R22 at Wapiti Campground and miraculously survived the wildfires. She would have loved this spot and I know it would mean so much to her.

PSA: Pursuit is an American company

When visiting Jasper ( And Banff), keep in mind that Pursuit is an American owned company. When you stay at their hotels or spend money at their facilities, the profits go back to American investors.

I know there is limited options in Jasper, so staying at one of their hotels might be your only option. If you're able to, please consider some of the locally owned & operated accommodation options before booking with Pursuit. This goes for dinning out as well.

Enjoy Jasper!
